For prospect package including slugging Matt LaPorta

I like MIL going for it. A Sabathia-Sheets 1/2 is pretty sweet. LaPorta can mash. Should be interesting to see what Cleveland does with him - 1b? OF? I'm sure the OF.

This seems like a win-win. The Brewers need to do something for this year. However, anyone remember when the Indians dealt away Bartolo Colon?

CC has got to be tickled pink for more chances to hit!

not good for the redbirds. and I don't have much hope that they'll make any deals that will help em stay in the playoff hunt.

This should force the Cubs to make a move...I still think they are the class of the division but I expect they will add a pitcher..rumor is Harden...

inside source...Cubs have a deal in place for Harden...Gallager, Patterson, Murton for Harden and a minor leaguer...should be announced shortly.

Considering I don't envision Gallagher as anything more than a #3 starter, and Murton/Patterson as nothing more than decent role playing major leaguers, I think the Cubs have made a reasonable gamble to get a top flight ace like Harden.

High end Gallagher is a #3...but more likely a 4/5 type starter.

Cubs also acquired Chad Gaudin in the deal which should help the bullpen and give them another emergency starter.

Harden is obviously an injury risk (9 times on the DL)...but for what we gave up it is a great deal. Added bonus is Harden still has a year left on his current contract.

Pitching staff looks contender quality with the addition of Harden.

Murton is exactly the kind of guy who could thrive on the A's. The Cubs really never gave him a shot.

And Gallagher fits the mold too - power pitcher, lots of K's.

This is exactly the kind of return I'd have expected Oakland to get for a young stud pitcher, although these guys have to get a bit better (and Harden has to get injured as we expect).

Zambrano, Harden, Lilly, Dempster - that looks like a real pitching staff there.

Murton is probably a better AL player. He was given a pretty fair shot in Chicago...850 at-bats over the past three seasons. He will hit in the majors...high average...ok OBP...ok SLG...his real problem is he does not have a defensive position. He is a liability anywhere you put him in the field. His only real position is one of the corner outfield spots and even there he is bad defensively and does not really provide the power you want from those positions. He is a 4A outfielder...not much of a loss...IMO.

Eric Patterson...has a chance to be an above average second basemen...I do not think he will ever hit well enough to deserve a major league outfield job. He can take a walk or two...something his brother never could do. Can steal bases. He is a nice little player but nothing spectacular about him.

Sean Gallagher...he had to be the one player Oakland wanted. He definitely has upside as a 22 year old starting pitcher. His stuff is not really electric but definitely above average. Playing his home games in Oakland should help his numbers. I think his ceiling is probably a solid number 3 starter.

Josh Donaldson...single A catcher. He is rated as a good prospect but I think he is slightly overrated. He is hitting .220 in double A this year...is already 22 years old. I do not see him as much of a loss especially considering the Cubs have Soto for hopefully the next 10 years filling that position.

Rich Harden...one of the best in the game when healthy. That is obviously the problem...his health. 6 DL stints the past 3 years. Highest starter K/IP in all of baseball. Having another year at a reasonable price is also nice to have.

Chad Gaudin...probably a career bullpen or 4/5 starter type. Not the greatest control. Still has some upside at 25 years old. A decent replacement for Gallagher this year. Strengthens an already strong bullpen.

For the Cubs it comes down to having a healthy Harden for the playoffs. This is a team that is actively trying to win a World Series and Harden in the rotation definitely improves their chances. I personally think it was a great move for what they gave up. The only player with any future on this team was SGallagher and Harden is simply better than SG will ever be. Low risk...high reward = great move.
