Congrats to Coldwater Coyotes, who won the RIBC this year, leading wire to wire. Kudos to Uptown Bombers, who kept chipping away at what often appear to be an insurmountable lead, and at least made CC sweat a little down the stretch.

Final standings appear in the table below.

Please use this thread for several purposes:

  • RIBC managers may post a recap of their season, if they wish. What worked well, what went wrong, what would you do differently the next time, and what did you learn?
  • I'd appreciate it if someone from each of the qualifying leagues would post the final standings of their league. This will make it easier for me to locate when I go about deciding on qualifications for next season.
  • If there were any managers in any league who failed to live up to standards in behavior or activity level, I'd like to know about it. Bad behavior is never tolerated. Failing to follow through for the season can also be grounds for declining an invite to the RIBC or a AAA league, depending on circumstances. If you feel uncomfortable about "ratting out" any other manager in this thread, you may also send me a confidential email.
Thanks to everyone for a great season.

Back in the bigs, baby! Woo hoo.

It was a great year in the AA Eastern League. I took a huge advantage after a stellar draft, scoring as high as 138.5 points as late as June somethingth. youngroman did not give up and carved into my lead, and really had the lead down the stretch before some bad pitching performances cost him vital ratio points. youngroman outmanaged me but my early lead and a few better-late-than-never moves helped.

Props to everyone, including loki and Tequila who never quit and gave all they had to make the leaders earn their points.

Looking back on a losing season isn't fun so better do it now or it won't get done at all. The one positive I can take out of this season is that I can at least recognize a good team even if I didn't draft it myself. When reading back through my draft recap in the section that asks what teams do you like, I mentioned 5 teams and those teams all finished in the top 5 places this year.

Usually when a team finishes low, injuries played a big part along with other players underperforming. I feel that my team was no different in those regards. My #2 pick Bedard can easily be termed a complete bust and my #4 pick Furcal, while he got me off to a great start, became a bust when he got injured and never returned. My second starting pitcher (#7 pick) was Big Z, and he had a rather pedestrian year, especially in the K department. Ian Kinsler (#5 pick) was a beast for most of the year and I would argue among the best fantasy players of all, until he too went down with injury. #6 and #9 picks were Alex Gordon and Andruw Jones and while Gordon was ok, he wasn't worthy of a #6 pick and Jones was a complete bust. #11 and #12 picks were Liriano and Butler, two more busts as they both bombed and then whithered away in the minors and had to be dropped. Rowand was pretty good most of the year at #14 and Bourn and Pierre got quite a few steals at #13 and #16. Bourn also choked late and while I traded Pierre prior to his injury, the player I got in return soon lost his closer role with a midseason trade. Out of the other 10 players only Doumit at #20 was worth anything and most were just plain awful, didn't play at all, or also got hurt.

Looking back at my initial draft and how many of the top players were either injured or didn't produce it is a wonder I finished as high as I did. I think the three biggest blows were Bedard, Furcal, and Andruw Jones. With those three producing for a whole year like I envisioned, I still wouldn't have won, but at least would have been more competitive.

Thanks to Guru for providing this league for us to enjoy!

This year in the RIBC just about everything went my way. A mixture of good drafting, key free agents, and avoiding multiple injuries explain why I did so well. My top 7 picks all performed at or above the level I was hoping for. The real stroke of luck came in the middle rounds, where I got great value from Peralta (10th), Lyon (11th, even after his implosion he was a good value), Damon (12th), Marcum (16th) and Nady (21st). Even with all those good performances, my team would not have been in contention without the FA pickup of Carlos Quentin who was just outstanding. To a lesser extent, Buerhle and Wiggington also made a good impact as FA's. Mostly though, with the exception of Nick Johnson's injury and a few bust picks in the middle rounds, my draft gave a great core group of guys and meant that I didn't have to desperately weave my way through the waiver wire all season.

As far as what I could have done better, there really wasn't much I could have done. Coldwater's team was really machine-like, and as they say in baseball, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. Perhaps I could have made a trade for another closer sooner. I tried to, but to no avail. Looking back at the draft, the Jose Reyes/Hanley Ramirez choice was a difficult one, and while Hanley ended up with better overall numbers, his boost in OPS would not have helped my team as much as Jose's 20+ steals. So I feel acquitted in that respect. However, considering that in drafting Reyes, I let Hanley slip to Coldwater, I might wonder how things would have taken shape if those picks had been reversed. But really, I have no second guesses. I am extremely pleased to have done this well in the league.

Finally, I just want to say that I really love this format. The league is so deep and forces you to really know the game if you hope to do well. I hope there are no changes in mind for next year. Ultimately, what makes the league work is the quality of the managers, and so to them I say thanks for a great season. Of course, none of us would be here, let alone in this league, without Guru. Thanks Guru for providing the forum and opportunity to participate and I look forward to next year.

I was really confident this year coming out of our draft. I made a conscious effort to focus my offense around the ratios and positions with less depth. I took highly ranked SS (round 3) and C (round 6) early on, before those talent pools get real thin. Unfortunately, injuries at those positions to Tulowitski and Posada left me replacing their more favorable expectations with undrafted replacements at very thin positions. Soriano missed alot of time too. Of course, I cannot rally make injuries an excuse, since most of use dealt with key players missing time. But, even though I drafted players with really great offensive ratios like Soriano and Teixeira in rounds 1 and 2, and Josh Hamilton in round 8, it was not enough to carry the lower than average supporting cast of under achieving hitters I surrounded them with. I ended up doing real well in steals thanks to a great first half of the season by Ellsbury and mid season pick up Fred Lewis, but no one bit any of my trade offers when I tried to shore up the rest of my offensive numbers and offered 5 other managers Ellsbury for what I thought was a comparable mid level rbi/SLG option. I was not dumping, but it turned out to be a smart move by everyone who rejected that offer as Ellsbury's numbers in runs and steals fell off after the break. At the end, my aggregate offensive totals were only better than 3 other teams. On the pitching side, my team was a lot stronger, in the top-6, mostly due to top results in K and WHIP and average results everywhere else. With no real standouts, but solid efforts by Lowe, Beckett, and Burnett it was pitching that kept my team in the middle of the standings.

Again, hats off to Coldwater Coyotes, for making the title chase a foregone conclusion and to Uptown Bombers, The Red Scorpions and Guru, who were in the top-5 all season long. Thanks to everyone for staying active in the league and for making this the most challenging and enjoyable fantasy baseball format out there. Thanks again to Guru for making this all happen. I look forward to AAA next season. Have a great winter everyone, see you in the spring. Only 105 days til pitchers and catchers!

I'd just like to say something about the AAA PCL, since there was no in-season thread for it.

This was easily the closest and most hotly contested roto league I have ever been in. The lead, all the way up until the last day, changed hands almost daily. Thanks to some deft pitching FA claims, I came from the depths to claim 1st place in August and had it held for most of September until about 10 days to go in the season. It was all I could do to eek out 4th place on the last day.

The win goes to Da Bomb Squad, and congrats to them for coming from 3rd on Saturday to first on Sunday. But really this league was so close that it could have been any one of the first five teams. If we played another week it could easily have gone to someone else. Heck, it could have gone to someone else with one more full day of play!

I don't really have a whole lot to say about it. I had the #1 pick of picks and I came in 14th with the most roster moves. That's pretty bad.

Best Draft Picks:
#12 pick - got me Howard and Peavy, which was exactly what I wanted. And both were pretty darn decent.

1. Ryan Howard - led the majors in homers.

8. Brad Lidge - best closer in baseball, although 21 fewer saves than K-Rod.

12. Ryan Theriot - steals and walks from a middle infielder. A pleasant surprise.

13. CJ Wilson - a decent year till he got hurt. Lots of saves.

16. Mike Jacobs - lots of power this late

19. Brian Giles - got a .399 OBP in a full season out of him.

21. Wandy Rodriguez - held him all year, and got decent K's and some great starts. I expected huge things from him, and although he wasn't at that level, he was decent.

Worst Draft Picks:

6. Rafael Soriano - definitely not what I expected. Wound up as my 5th or 6th closer instead of my 2nd.

7. Gary Sheffield - wasn't the steal I was looking for.

9. Jeremy Hermida - no breakthrough and then he lost his job.

14. Daric Barton - man, he didn't live up to the hype.

17. Kenji Johjima - the worst part is his name value made me keep him too long.

22. Jerry Owens - at least I knew to take a White Sox outfielder.

Best Waiver Pickups:

Kurt Suzuki - May 4 and Aug 21. Started at catcher most of the year.

Jayson Werth - May 16. If only I'd kept him longer.

Marco Scutaro - May 25. Wound up as a decent option.

Randy Johnson - July 20. Really had a comeback year.

Joel Hanrahan - July 22. Got 9 saves out of him.

Ubaldo Jimenez - 5 times. In 53 innings, got a 2.85 ERA out of him.

Finishing 4th represents my best result in five years of the RIBC.

I started off well, mostly on the torrid start of Chase Utley. At the end of April, I was ranked third. Although I bounced around during the next several months, I still managed to be in 4th at the end of May, and was back in 3rd by June 30th.

July was a tough month, ending in 6th, and occasionally ranking as low as 8th. Utley was in a slump, and Manny was pouting. But I had the second best result in August, and outperformed every team in September to climb back to 4th place.

Manny was obviously a key ingredient to my August-September surge. I got him in round three, but he ended the year with stats deserving of a first round pick. My actual first rounder, Utley, disappointed after his hot start, but as a second basement, still provided decent value. My second round pick was the biggest bust - Victor Martinez. What hurts even more is that I almost took Chipper Jones instead. However, Victor's injury-ridden and power-devoid season wasn't as harmful as it could have been, as it led me to nab Kelly Shoppach early in April - and Shoppach was surprisingly productive all season long, with an OPS exceeding 900.

In spite of occasional aches and pains, Youkilis was also a key ingredient on the hitting side, and a real bargain as a 9th round pick. He drove in 35 more runs than I had forecast, and slugged more than 100 pts higher. He outproduced Hawpe (round 5) and Burrell (round 7), although both of those guys had their good moments as well.

On the pitching side, Francisco Rodriguez almost singlehandedly nailed down the saves category. Huston Street was very disappointing, but getting Brian Fuentes in round 17 was a nice coup, and John Rauch (18) also made nice contributions during the first half.

My starting pitching was average at best. Vazquez (rnd 9) and Greinke(15) came in roughly as expected (Vazquez a bit worse, Greinke somewhat better.) Johnny Cueto was a nice late round pickup. But I spent a good deal of the season foraging for starting pitching value, and never really got better than average, with most pickups providing decent contributions in wins and Ks, but worse-than-average ratios.

My only trade – giving up Rauch for Juan Pierre – turned out to be a bust for both parties. Pierre was injured shortly thereafter, and never reclaimed a regular role for the Dodgers with Manny in the house. But Rauch didn’t do much after his trade from the Nats either.

Khalil Greene was a complete bust, and his best contribution was getting injured so I could replace him with Asdrubal Cabrera, whose OPS was almost 850 during his tenure on my team – about 300 points higher than Greene had generated. Asdrubal also matched Green in the counting stats, but did so in about one-third as many plate appearances.

All in all, it was a fairly solid season from a variety of contributors, anchored by Manny, Utley, Youk, and KRod, but with a variety of important contributions across the board. If I had to do it all over, I’d simply pick up Cliff Lee in April! (Like we all saw THAT coming!) Or draft Volquez instead of Cueto.

I was awed by Coldwater Coyote’s dominant season – especially given his draft situation. As many of you may not know, he had a sudden family emergency that necessitated an difficult trip to Europe just as a draft began, and as a result, most of his picks were made on his behalf from very deep queues. For those who think it’s important to be able to react to developing runs, his record suggests otherwise. In fact, maybe his results are (in part) testimony to the importance of drafting for value without regard to what everyone else is doing. I’m humbled.

This was the league where the team that led much of the season (and was in second or third place throughout the final month) didn't log in since August (he is active in RIFC, so...?). There were others who abandoned their teams in June and July. Pretty disappointing, so yeah, I want to make sure my 1st place finish is well documented so I don't have to play in AAA again. Ever. :D

I know many people have cited injuries as reasons (and legitimately so) for poor seasons. But my goodness, I do believe Yahoo now has a "DL" listing and a "special section for Khahan's DL" section. At one point I had 9 players on the DL or inactive. And we're not talking bench warmers or back up players. We're talking the likes of Daisuke, Matt Caps, Ryan Church, Vernon Wells.

I also had some lesser guys like Aaron Hill (who was projecting out to about 20HRs or so) hit the dl hard, too.

Add in a few disappointing performances from Jeremy Hermida, Jeremy Bonderman and Jarrod Salty (lesson learned...stay away from Jerrys!!).

It was so bad that I was dead last around the All-star break. Which makes finishing 8th and staying afloat in AAA next season see all the sweeter to me.

Looking over my draft, I'm very happy with Grady Sizemore, Mark Teixeira and Cole Hamels (1-3). I was pleasantly surprised by Uggla. When you weigh contributions vs draft position I'd have to say Carlos Delgado was my MVP this year.

There were no trades. This was all WW magic to stay afloat.

Best picks: Those mentioned above plus Jose Valverde

Worst picks: Everybody from round 12 on! I think only Ryan Church stayed on me team but he was injured most of the season.

Biggest disappointments: Jarrod Saltamacchia and Homer Bailey.

First of all, kudos to Coldwater for an absolutely dominating season from start to finish. Hovering in the high 140's for most of the season is just, well extraordinary. And well done by Uptown Bombers. 128.5 points could very well win most leagues. Clearly both were well ahead of the pack.

My team, well, mixed feelings is the best summation. Coming out of the draft, I thought I had a kick-ass team. But the reality is only 7 drafted players stayed with me all year. Two did leave via a trade. So maybe my draft wasn't as good as I thought.

Injuries hit hard, as they did for all:

4th Todd Helton out since early July, 83 games
6th John Smoltz 28 Innings
7th Matt Capps Out July 1st Respectable while I had him
9th Yovani Gallardo 20 Innings
13th Michael Cuddyer Out June 27th
18th Ryan Church Clearly the early MVP of my team, missed 6 weeks and never really was the same as earlier

Jimmy Rollins had a fine season, but probably didn't put up 1st round stats. More late 2nd, early 3rd. By far the MVP of the team was Dustin Pedroia ( round 10 ). Steven Drew (12th ), Carlos Beltran ( 2nd ) and Hunter Pence ( 5th ) all had decent seasons, in spurts. Garrett Atkins ( 3rd ) was a disappointment other than give me a 1B eligible replacement for Helton.

Inspite of the above, perseverance paid off in working the free agent market. I'm no genius, but good value was there to be had. Ryan Dempster ( 17 wins, K's and great ratios ), Saloman Torres ( 28 saves ), Ricky Nolasco ( 6 wins, 80K's in 78 innings until traded, for Jason Bay ), and Mike Pelfrey , all key additions to a sorry pitching staff crippled by the injuries to Smoltz, Gallardo and Capps were found on the wire. Randy Wolf and Luis Ayala, late additions added wins and some saves to help.

Garrett Anderson and Marlon Byrd were key free agent offensive additions, both having hot streaks that helped what was other wise a decent offense. I did miss out on Carlos Quentin, who was available and for some reason, I felt I had no one worth dropping for him. Wrong. VERY wrong.

So while my team wasn't as strong as I thought at drafttime, it was good enough to score at least 11 points in 6 cats, above 8 in 2 others, ending with a total of 98.5. Only wins and K's were disappointing.

Good enough for 5th place and hopefully a return invite next season.

Much thanks to Guru, for starting, organizing and continuing the Invitational Leagues. Great fun. Greater competition.

Looking back to to the top half my draft, my team doesn't really feel like a 3rd place RIBC team. Out of my top 14 picks, the only one who really outpefromed his draft position is Lincecum. Braun and Mauer were good but not great, Upton stole a lot but didn't have any power all season long, Pena wasn't as good as in 2007, Felix didn't have the breakout season I was expecting, Kendrick and Escobar were injured a lot, Cust I guess was OK in this format (the ugly BA and K's have no affect), Teahen was medicore, Sherrill started great but broke down in the 2nd half and the duo of Putz and Gagne were as ugly as it can get with closers.

The diffrence was made in the next 7 rounds... Longoria (15th), Mclouth (17th), Winn (19th), Ervin Santana (20th) and Carlos Gomez (21st) all ended up far outperforming their draft position and were really the heart of my team.

As far as FA go, only 3 guys are really worth mentioning, all pitchers... John Lester for 10 wins and 2.81 ERA in 112 IP, Jeremy Guthrie for 3.56 ERA in 101 IP and Grant Balfour for his 48 dominating IP (4 W, 3 S, 1.50 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 67 Ks).

All in all my team was as solid and boring as it can be. No real superstarts (other then Lincecum), but also no real holes as I got positive contribution from basicly everyone. I was in the top 5 pretty much all season, spending my time between 105-115 points, witch was good for as high as 2nd place as late as mid August before Uptown Bombers made his great late run. I guess it was only fitting that I finished almost as balanced as possible, getting 55.5 Points from hitting and 55 from pitching.

Kudos to CC for his amazing season, thanks Guru for making it happen and thanks everyone for a really fun and challenging league. I can't wait for next year.

I also would like to congratulate Coldwater for his great season, and thank Guru for hosting this highly competitive league.

I'm still suffering from a bit of whiplash in early June. On 6/2, I had 67.5 points. Two weeks later on 6/16, I had 48.5 points. Nine days later, on 6/25, I had 77.5 points. After that I settled into the 65-72 range the rest of the way.

Like many, I suffered a few injuries, and I had too many of my early draft picks under perform. I often considered going without a SS, since the ones I threw out there seemed to do more harm than good.

MVP - Aubrey Huff (round 18)
LVP - Robinson Cano (round 4)

Guys I'm Disappointed with ~
Carl Crawford (Round 2)
Robinson Cano (round 4)
Aaron Harang (Round 5)
Mike Lowell (Round 7)
Jason Isringhausen (Round 8)
John Maine (Round 9)
Julio Lugo (Round 12)

Guys I'm happy with ~
Prince Fielder (Round 1)
Magglio Ordonez (Round 3)
Brian McCann (Round 6)
Joey Votto (Round 15)
Aubrey Huff (Round 18)
Ryan Franklin (Round 25)

Key FA pickups ~
Jason Bartlett - Only 106 ABs with me, but same OPS as Fielder
Kevin Slowey - I got 134 inning of pretty decent numbers and 11 Ws
Jose Arredondo - 8 vulture wins
Brad Ziegler - Good ERA & WHIP with 11 saves

Looking at the names, I know understand why I finished in 10th. See some of you next year in AAA.
