0 Subject: 6x6 Category Suggestions

Slizz and I run a 10 team work league which is pretty relaxed 6x6 Head to Head scoring setup. We added Losses for pitching last year to give an even 6 to 6 ratio to hitting but are looking for a different category cause neither of us liked it all that much.

Anyone had success with some different pitching categories they'd like to share? tentatively we are going to go with Holds (and going to add a couple RP spots to the starting lineup). Our only reservation is that probably half the league isn't all that baseball obsessed, so I fear its something they won't be really on top of (middle relief).

Roster Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, IF, OF, OF, OF, Util, Util, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL
Hitting Categories: R, XBH, HR, RBI, SB, OBP
Pitching Categories: W, L?, SV, K, ERA, WHIP

Everybody in the league loves the XBH category cause it gives something to those doubles/triples hitters and is easy to follow (vs. a SLG or an OPS).

not many people like negative stats especially in casual leagues where you have to balance (overcome i.e. good pitcher on a bad team) that stat with positive ones. If you want 6X6 Holds works QS (Quality Starts) eliminates the middle relief issue but may not be recorded/available. I like blue hen's suggestion. HR already give a bonus because of RBI and Runs Scored.

In place of XBH and HR is there a total bases?
That would give more weight to HR's compared to doubles.

Losses are a good category to punish those who "churn" starters, which can be an anathema to H2H leagues. If you change it from Losses to Quality Starts, you take one churn punishment and turn it into a churn enticement.

I'm assuming everyone knows that "churning" is the practice of starting a bunch of average starting pitchers each day, then cutting them and picking up the next day's starters. Spend all your pitching money on closers and you are guaranteed to win Wins, K's, and Saves each week. Yeah, you are usually punting ERA and WHIP, but occasionally you can sneak a point from one of those two.

Does your league have a maximum number of starts per week rule?

Holds are not too difficult for noobs to pick up. If they can understand WHIP, then they can easily adapt to holds.

my favorite 6 by 6 would be:

Runs, RBI, Total Bases, BB, SB, Assists.

Quality Starts, Strikeouts, ERA, WHIP, Saves, Holds.

Adds value to infielders, relief pitchers, and starting pitchers, especially those on bad offensive teams. Assists, holds and quality starts all catch on fast, you don't have to be a hardcore fan to check out the free agent leaderboards.

While I think Total Bases (no HR) would solve some of the problem by making it 5x5 again - its hard to explain, but I think these guys like seeing their guy hit a HR and seeing it reflected in an actual HR category. Does that makes sense?

It would be like in football if you gave points for "points scored" and there were various thresholds. Your average player doesn't want that - they want to see their Touchdown and see it as a TD - 6 points.

There is no max starts per week (just a 10 IP minimum on the other side). I usually rotate a couple spot starts through my own team. Nobody really goes crazy with it (with or without the L category tested last year).

I'm still leaning towards holds.

I do like the concept of adding something for middle infielders, and while I don't know about defense and all of that - I'm thinking of making instead of just IF -- making MI and CI spots seperate.

As far as HR going across the multiple categories - the XBH idea started because we actually had 2B's and 3B's as categories which everybody loved. But I couldn't figure a way to condense that. No option for 2B/3B category lol...

Maybe I could go back to that and add Holds and Quality starts? it would be 7x7... hmm.. thats not bad actually.
Hitting Categories: R, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, OBP
Pitching Categories: W, QS, SV, H, K, ERA, WHIP

If you want a simple category for pitchers, that rewards relievers, how about just games pitched? Some reward to people who churn starters a bit, but also makes relievers more valuable.
