0 Subject: TSN Baseball Redesign

I signed up for TSN baseball today.

The site has been TOTALLY redesigned, and frankly, I have doubts as to whether I'm going to be able to continue to produce the same tools that you are used to having. At best, all of my scripts that extract player data (primarily price and position) and fantasy team data will need to be rewritten - and it is possible that I'm not going to be able to get them to work at all.

At this point, I just want to give you all a heads up. As this redesign is likely to continue for the other sports going forward, it's possible that this will mark the end of my ability to produce tools like the Assimilator and sortable stats.

Maybe the redesigned site will offer tools that are sufficient to run your teams without RotoGuru support.

In any event, I'll need to spend some time trying to figure out if I can adapt to the new approach - but the initial review is not promising.

So I may soon be looking for other fantasy games to affiliate with.

I'd appreciate it of some of the more capable programmers here could take a look at the new TSN format and see if you can figure out ways to access data in an automated fashion. You can see the setup by registering for the free game "Salary Cap Challenge".

In particular, look at the "Players" page. It appears that the list of players is being populated with data using various javascript routines. As a result, if a page is accessed by some means that does not support javascript, the underlying player data is not produced. My routines have generally accessed this data either by pulling in data directly on my server, or directly into excel. But neither approach seems to work in this situation.

Perhaps there are other ways to skin this cat. My scripting skills are limited, so I'm not sure I have the background necessary to figure this out. But as a start, I thought that some of you with more experience and knowledge might be able to figure something out.

Thanks.

the secret to success is this Firefox Plugin: Tamper Data

just install it, restart Firefox and select the Tamper in Menu Tools. a new window opens where all HTTP-traffic is listed. you see the URLs, the HTTP-Headers, the Cookies, the Content, ...

first 25 batters incl. stats:
First 25 batters

the result is not really a html-file, but I guess that does not matter as long as the important values (playerid, positions, team, price) are listed somewhere.

Not sure if this the right thread, but here it goes. It's been 6-7 years since I've played the baseball cap game. Looking for any reminders as to how I should build and manage my roster. I do remember that later in the year, you should have trades saved up to rotate pitchers. But beyond that, I can't recall any strategy for which positions to go cheap on and which ones to buy/hold the big guns. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just signed up for the free game. What a nightmare. It looks like they took all the lessons they learned from the college FB pickem game on how to screw up and applied it to baseball. I've been giving them about $100/y for 10 years and I can't even win prizes because I live in Colorado. If Guru can't provide his usual services because of the design change, I'm done with TSN. Anybody got a TSN email addy I can complain to?

yr = your info in post 3 was very helpful. I think I may be able to solve this after all. But it's going to take a fair amount of work....

[ugh]

[5] Balrog - don't complain yet. I may be able to solve this, and I haven't even approached TSN for assistance (if needed).

After some more testing last night, I am quite confident that I can continue to produce sortable stats, players pages, and the Assimilator.

I am hopeful that I can also continue to provide the ability for the Assimilator to directly pull in rosters from TSN. I won't be able to develop that until the season starts, since other teams' frozen roster pages are not yet available. But I'm assuming that should be solvable using a comparable approach.

I am no expert with running scripts, so I won't touch on that
aspect for it.

But as for the site's design, I have to give it two thumbs up. I
toyed around a bit, selecting some players, and making roster
exchanges. The site was quick and easy to use. Essentially they
have turned the roster page into Guru's assimilator, where you
can make 2-3 trades and then submit the roster, as opposed to
making individual transactions.

They also got rid of the stupid rule that if you trade Player A for
Player B at 12:30, they both freeze if ANY game takes place.
Now, if there are afternoon games, but players A and B don't
play until 7, you actually have until 7 to make final judgement.
So that is positive as well.

Is this the only TSN thread around here? I'm going to be trying the 'free' game out for the first time this year, and am likely to have some questions.
