RotoHog wins Sporting News account

Not sure what this all means, but it's possible that the Sporting News games will cease to exist as we know them and be replaced by a RotoHog clone.

Here's another story with a slightly different spin: FantasySportsBusiness.com
“Sporting News users will still be able to play the same games that they are used to playing on SportingNews.com, and we are working hard to ensure that the best features of those games remain intact in the new versions,” RotoHog business development director Garrett Brown told FSB.com. “We’ll also be adding new features that will make the games more enjoyable for fantasy players.”

It's tough to know whether the implication is that the games will really remain the same, or whether the implicit assumption is that the RotoHog salary cap (market) format is substantially the same as the Sporting News model.

Another story, with a quote from Jeff Gertula, who some of you may remember as the former head of TSN's fantasy games division.
“In order to take our games to the next level, we wanted to align with somebody intensely focused on the space, was committed to a strong [business-to-business] solution, and wasn’t satisfied with developing the same old off-the-shelf products,” said Jeff Gerttula, vice president and general manager for online at Sporting News.

Interesting the first article didn't mention baseball and the next two left out basketball. Hopefully they don't kill the hoops game.

I'm sure this would cover all games. TSN would not farm out games for some sports and not others - although it is possible they would cease to offer some sports.

Sounds like TSN decided that it was more cost-efficient to outsource the fantasy games production to RotoHog vs. continue to develop and maintain from within.

The question will be whether TSN converts all of their games to the RotoHog format(s) (I believe RotoHog offers both a stock market game and a standard roto format), or if RotoHog will be asked to take over management of the existing TSN engine and format. I'd guess it will be the former - but we may not know until Football is launched.

I like the general RotoHog framework - but there have been significant design flaws in previous offerings that seriously interfered with game play. The most notable is the need to be able to trade at the opening bell each day (or in the case of football, each Tuesday), because most of the periodic price movement occurs in those opening minutes. I've been fairly successful at RotoHog football, and one of the key reasons was that I could be available to trade at 8am ET on Tuesday (or whatever time the market opened - maybe it was 9:30.) Those without that scheduling flexibility were at a severe disadvantage.

But maybe they'll address that element. I guess there's not much to do but wait and see.

beebop - I'm not able to log-on either. I can get the sportingnews page fine, but have issues when I try to log-on. I get a, "Page Temporarily Unavailable Error."

Amusing - last night I googled "RotoHog Sporting News" just to see if I could find any other commentaries. A link to this thread popped up on the first page.

I have 9000 credits with TSN and was planning on using them this
football season. I hope this change will not effect current credits.

Tex here is what was posted on the TSN site.

Starting with the upcoming football season, Sporting News Fantasy Games will be built and hosted by Rotohog. However, the unique brand of Sporting News Fantasy Games will not change; specifically, the components that make up our salary cap pricing model will remain intact. As a game player, you should not expect to see any major gameplay or rule changes. We will always be looking to add new features or general improvements from season to season, but the core of the games and our prize structure will stay the same.

We will also be upgrading our e-commerce system, which will affect managers with outstanding tokens. Managers with outstanding tokens will have them converted to "site credits", which will be redeemable for future games beginning with the 2009 football games. However, members actively buying trades in Salary Cap Challenge Baseball or Golf will not have their tokens automatically transferred to "site credits" for future games. We are doing this because once tokens are transferred to "site credits", they will no longer be redeemable for golf or baseball trades. At the conclusion of the baseball and golf seasons, leftover tokens will be automatically converted into "site credits" for future games.

If you’re actively buying trades for Salary Cap Challenge Baseball or Golf and you want your tokens transferred for "site credits" for Football 2009, there will be several dates, starting in early July, when we will be converting tokens to "site credits" upon request. Unfortunately, we will not be able to honor requests for partial transfers -- we will only be able to transfer all of a manager’s tokens to "site credits". We will contact users with tokens and baseball or golf teams prior to each of these dates, reminding them of the opportunity to convert.

Unredeemed trades will be similarly affected by our commerce change. Unredeemed trades will be transferred for use in future games around September 1st. If you do not have a Season 2 Baseball or Golf team, your unredeemed trades will be automatically transferred. If you do have an active Season 2 Baseball or Golf team, you will be contacted prior to the early September transfer and will have the opportunity to request your unredeemed trades be transferred for use in future games, beginning with football. Once trades are transferred, they will no longer be available for use in any baseball or golf game. When all of the baseball and golf games end, all unredeemed trades will be automatically transferred to the new system for use in football and all future games.

We expect our relationship with Rotohog will allow us to continue to offer unique and high-quality fantasy games long into the future. We will be able to focus our attention more on providing tools and features to further differentiate our games and our community. There will be more information in the coming weeks and months and we will try to let everyone know the latest information as it becomes available.

Sincerely, Eric Ferreira Member Services Manager

reeb, thanks for the post. I don't know a thing about rotohog and
its good to hear that the salary cap game is not going to change a
whole lot. Its fine the way it is.
