0 Subject: Home Run Derby 2009 - Pick the Winner (and Losers)

Assuming there have been no changes from the 2008 format (I've searched online, without success, for 2009 rules):

Home Run Derby Rules
• An out is registered when a player swings at a pitch and does not hit a home run.
• A ball hit over the fence must be fair to count as a home run.

Opening Round
• Each player gets 10 outs to hit as many home runs as possible.
• The four players with the most home runs hit in the Opening Round advance to the Semi-Final Round.

Semi-Final Round
• Home run totals from the first round will carry over to the second round.
• Each player gets 10 outs to hit as many home runs as possible per at bat.
• The two players with the most home runs in the Semi-Final Round advance to the Championship Round.

Championship Round
• Home runs from the first two rounds do not carry over to the Championship Round; Opening and Semi-Final Round totals are cleared from the board.
• Each player gets 10 outs to hit as many home runs as possible.
• The player who hits the most home runs in the Championship Round is declared the Home Run Derby champion.

Participants
Nelson Ramon Martinez Cruz, Rangers, AL
Prince Semien Fielder, Brewers, NL
Adrian Gonzalez, Padres, NL
Ryan James Howard, Phillies, NL
Charles Brandon Inge, Tigers, AL
Joseph Patrick Mauer, Twins, AL
Carlos Felipe Pena, Rays, AL
Jose Alberto Pujols, Cardinals, NL

Your challenge:

A) Pick the two players who will hit the fewest home runs in the Opening Round (not necessarily one from each league).
B) Pick the four players who will advance to the Semi-Final Round.
C) Pick the two players who will advance to the Championship Round.
D) Pick the winner (the player who hits the most home runs in the Championship Round).
First tie breaker:
• Predict the total number of home runs hit in the championship round (closest to the actual total, whether over or under); if the championship round goes extra pitches, those home runs count toward the total.
Second tie breaker (if necessary):
• Predict the number of home runs hit in the championship round by the winner (closest to the actual total, whether over or under); if the championship round goes extra pitches, those home runs count toward the winner's total.

Entries close with the first pitch to the first participant in the Home Run Derby competition.

Yay, Prince!

Next time, I'll try to remember to assign point values for each category:

1 point for each correct (A)
2 points for each correct (B)
4 points for each correct (C)
8 points for correct (D)

Trivia item: Tim Wakefield and Prince Fielder graduated from the same high school (Eau Gallie High) in Florida ... 18 years apart. Wakefield graduated in 1984, the year Fielder was born.

Props to all the Cruz supporters, but great picking Moose!

By the way, since Halliday will probably be in the NL to end the season, there is a real possibility that he is pitching today to earn "homefield" for his possible WS opponent. If he tanks, the conspiracy theorists will have a field day.

Yes, I hope he loses today and goes to the Phillies and gets homefield advantage when they play in the World Series.
