0 Subject: DraftBug Blogger Invitational Contest - Commentary

Today, I'm participating in a another "Blogger Invitational" contest at Draftbug, with a total of 12 teams entered. Here is my lineup, along with my thoughts on each slot. I put this together yesterday before leaving on vacation, so I hope that nothing changed today to make any of these picks seem stupid.

Pitcher: In a head-to-head, I'd probably take Carpenter($259) vs. Arizona or Lincecum ($378) at Pitt.. But in a large field, I want to differentiate at pitcher, and expect that those two will be the popular favorites - and they are also both a bit pricey for a $1200 cap. King Felix ($229) vs. Cleveland is my choice. Cleveland still has a decent hitting team (they just can't pitch), but Felix has been very solid of late, and good pitching stops good hitting. It's probably irrelevant - but Felix has pitched better on the road than at home this year. So it's not as though he relies on home cooking.

1B: With a 1200 salary cap, Pujols ($324) crowds out some other hitters - although I could force it if I wanted. Fielder ($252) is 9-29 career vs. Arroyo(3 HRs), and comes off a HR-Derby win. Again, I think I'll try the road less traveled - although I realize other teams may also find Pujols to be too rich. And he could certainly singlehandedly burn me for this.

2B: Going cheap with Barmes ($60), in spite of being away from Coors and in pitcher-friendly Petco. He's 4-6 lifetime vs. Geer, with a double and triple.

3B: Inge ($92) - Valueprice, hot bat (HR Derby notwithstanding), 4-9 career vs. Burnett with a HR. May regret taking anyone against Burnett while he's pitching so well, however.

SS: Orlando Cabrera ($120) - 6-12 vs. Saunders, 4 multi-hit games leading up to the ASB. Hopefully, the break doesn't slow him doown.

C: Yadier Molina - All Star catcher at price of only $72. Considered cheaper options, but can't be sure they'll be in the lineup. Yadier should play.

OF1: Dunn ($204) - Lefty vs. righty matchup, 7 career HRs vs. Zambrano. Might have been better served to go cheaper here, and then take Pujols. We'll see.

OF2: Willingham ($102) - 5-7 vs. Zambrano with 2 extra base hits. Hasn't gone hitless since June.

OF3: Colby Rasmus ($45) - hitting well lately. Value pick.

King Felix worked out nicely. Unfortunately, Fielder, Dunn, and Willingham are hurting. I probably should have taken Pujols instead of Fielder, and a cheaper outfielder than Dunn. I considered that, but decided to go with my first instincts, rather than making a switch and then having Fielder and Dunn go off.

Inge also turned out to be a bust.

I finished 6th out of 12. My pitcher was fine - Felix was the second highest scoring pitcher, behind only Oswalt - who nobody took. But my outfielders and corner infielders killed me, and I ended up 19 pts out of first.

Here is the winning roster (Ryan - lesterslegends.com):
OF Adam Jones BAL 1 1B, 1 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 K 9pts
OF Aaron Rowand SFG 1 K -1pts
OF Franklin Gutierrez SEA 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI 6pts
1B Albert Pujols STL 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K 12pts
2B Ben Zobrist TAM 2 1B, 1 R, 1 BB 4pts
3B Pablo Sandoval SFG 2 1B 2pts
SS Jason Bartlett TAM 1 BB, 1 K 0pts
C Joe Mauer MIN 1 1B, 1 R 2pts
SP Felix Hernandez SEA 1 W, 8 IP, 5 H, 8 K, 2 ER, 1 BB

Here were the 12 pitcher selections:
Felix 2
Buchholz 2
Ubaldo Jimenez 2
Lincecum 2
Zambrano
Burnett
Billingsley
Haren (?)

Interesting that no one took Carpenter.

What kind of weird scoring method was it that put Felix ahead of Carpenter?

IP tends to be the most important component, and runs are the same cost as a hit allowed.

W = 10 pt
L = -3 pt
SV = 7 pt
IP = 3 pt
H = -1 pt
K = 1 pt
ER = -1 pt
BB = -1 pt

Oswalt scored 37, Felix 34, Carpenter 33, Ubaldo 31

Draft Bug points scored for July 17
