Hidden away on the 39-54 Arizona Diamondbacks, Danny Haren is putting together one of baseball's finest seasons in recent history!
With tonight's stellar performance (8IP 4H 1ER 1BB 8K) Danny has lowered his ERA below the microscopic 2.00 benchmark, to 1.96.
How does this compare to other SPs with sub 2.00 ERA's over the last 40 years you ask? Well, I just happen to have that information in front of me. (Lucky you!)

Pardon, the formating on the chart, Mac doesn't want to cooperate.
Mikel, thanks for pointing out how good Haren has been this year. I couldn't help but realize just how good Maddux and Pedro were during their day when I looked at the list...and to think they did that during the steroid era.

Those are full seasons. Haren has a long way to go to stay on this list. Also, I'm pretty sure offense was higher in 1995 than 2009.

I think Dan would be pissed to see this, you are just BEGGING to jinx him, especially considering how poor a second half pitcher he has been in his career.

1972 was a good year for pitchers.

Ya, it's not gonna happen for Haren. Lots of guys have had sub-2.00 ERA's less than 100 games into the season.

Pedro at his peak was incredible. To post the years he did in the middle of the steriod era is truly remarkable. He's a Hall of Famer no matter what his win total says.
Full season or not, Sub 2 ERA thru 138 innings pitched is petty impressive.
BH, certainly he has a long way to go to finish under 2. I was simply pointing out how rare of an occurrence a sub 2 season really is.
Average Runs Scored/Game by a NL Team. 1995 - 4.11 2009 - 4.41 (thru yesterday)
To me, Pedro's 2000 season was the most impressive. AL Teams were averaging 5.29 Runs/Game that year.

Holt nailed it, Pedro's 2000 Adjusted ERA was off the charts.
Even the biggest Tim Keefe fan will tell you he only pitched 105 innings in 1880.

Pedro Martinez, definite juicer. Did you guys see him roid rage on Zimmer that time? LOL, but seriously, I'm leaning more towards being suspicious than impressed that Pedro put up those numbers during the steroid era...
Sad what it has come to. Maddux never roid raged on any coaches, but I'll point a finger at him too. He found a loophole in the testing, or invented his own, or something. Noone is safe!! Well, maybe Clemens, that is one stand up guy that Clemens.

Last night was a good example of just how difficult it is to keep a sub-2.00 ERA.
Dan Haren entered the night with a 2.19 ERA after 155.0 IP. With "just" 5 ER in 7.0 IP, his ERA jumped 0.19 points to 2.38, or a jump of 8%.
Zack Greinke had a similar night. He entered with 147.1 IP and a 2.08 ERA. He threw 5.0 innings, gave up 6 ER and saw his ERA jump 0.28 points to 2.36. That's a jump of just over 13%.
By comparison, if Greinke had entered with a 3.11 ERA (51 ER for the season), like Yovani Gallardo (3.13; #20 in the MLB ERA leaders list), his ERA would have jumped 0.26 points, or only 8%.
A pitcher has to be on for so long that a sub-2.00 ERA is an amazing achievement nowadays.
Did You Know? Gooden only had ONE game with more than 3 ER allowed in 1985. He allowed 5 ER against PHI on August 15.
Gooden did not allow a single ER in the entire month of September 1985. He lowered his ERA from 1.81 to 1.51.
Gooden had 13 games with 0 ER allowed in 1985.
