Congrats to Bash Brothers, who won the RIBC this year, leading wire to wire. Final standings appear in the table below. Please use this thread for several purposes: - RIBC managers may post a recap of their season, if they wish. What worked well, what went wrong, what would you do differently the next time, and what did you learn?
- I'd appreciate it if someone from each of the qualifying leagues would post the final standings of their league. This will make it easier for me to locate when I go about deciding on qualifications for next season.
- If there were any managers in any league who failed to live up to standards in behavior or activity level, I'd like to know about it. Bad behavior is never tolerated. Failing to follow through for the season can also be grounds for declining an invite to the RIBC or a AAA league, depending on circumstances. If you feel uncomfortable about "ratting out" any other manager in this thread, you may also send me a confidential email.
Thanks to everyone for a great season.Standings through games of Oct 4 |

(Borrowing the Q's from RIHC last year)
1. How did you do, relative to your own expectations? What were your best decisions? What didn't work so well? If you could reverse one or two decisions you made during the draft or the season, what would they be
I always play to WIN. Someday I will win one of these MFers. That said, finishing high enough to retain one's spot in next years RIBC is always the next goal.
The draft is usually a strong point for me, and I tend to be able to spot good value and snatch it when it falls too far. While I am okay at in-season management, I am probably average at best due to time availability more than anything. So, if I am to do well in these leagues, it's going to be on the back of a strong draft.
That's exactly what happened. According to Yahoo's rankings (and who knows how effective these rankings are, but for purposes of a retrospective such as this, it's good for talking after the fact), I made a pretty nice bounty in terms of draft value compared to where they ended up:
Howard (ranked 7th, picked 12th) Mauer (12th overall, picked in the 6th round) Cano (33rd, picked in the 7th) Cain (47th, picked in the 11th) Choo (54th, picked in 13th) A. Cabrera (111 - like a late 6th rounder, picked in 15th) Blake (138 - i.e. late 8th round, picked in 17th) Swisher (147 - beg. of 9th, picked in 16th)
The top 3 above really made my season though. Howard upped his BA, and thus raised his OBP to a solid .360 this year to go along with those juicy 141 RBI, 105 runs and even 8 SB's. Mauer should be the AL MVP with his 1.028 OPS and nearly 100 Runs/Rbi. Cano was money and Choo was phenomenal: 87 runs, 86 RBI, 21 SB, .883 OPS).
Thank goodness for the above, because my 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks were flops in BJ Upton (despite the 42 steals), David Ortiz and Vladimir Guerrero. To end up 6th in this league with 3 out of your top 4 picks being close to disasterous was a miracle!
My pitching did not work out well. My 2nd closer flopped and my speed on the waiver wire (see below) was insufficient to catch anyone off of the closer carousel. Beckett and Cain rocked, but Zambrano was mediocre and Saunders really sucked after a hot start.
2. Are there any changes in league rules that you would suggest for next year?
Nah. I like the depth in terms of teams (16) and positions (extra MI, extra CI, etc), as well as the use of OBP and SLG over HR and BA.
3. What have you learned over the course of this season? More critically, what would you do differently if you had to do it over - not necessarily with 20/20 statistical foresight, but in terms of general tactics or strategies?
I really have to put more effort into waiver wire management -- take more chances, be more proactive instead of reactive. Get a better browser on my phone/get injury update texts to my phone (yeah BH, I'm sure ESPN does that), etc.
Otherwise I should have stuck to my "younger with upside" general framework instead of taking Ortiz and Guerrero in rounds 3 and 4. BUT, I can't complain, as I believe I had the 3rd best offense in the league - I was done in by poor pitching. Since pitching is something you can patch together with great WW management (and I did have Scott Feldman this year), I think if I improve that it would improve my chances.
4. How important was the draft to your success or lack thereof? To what extent were you able to make effective adjustments via free agent pickups or trades?
The draft is almost always absolutely critical. You can't win the league with your draft, but you can assure yourself of a finish in the teens with a bad draft. Trades are always keenly difficult in this league. I made 2 trades I think but neither were key to my success, or lack thereof. WW management is very important. I was mediocre at best at it this year.
Thanks Guru for having the league again this year. I can't wait to give it another shot next year!

Wow, great season by Bash Brothers, total domination. But what a great league, the top seven spots or so ( other than BB ) seemed to flip flop on almost a daily basis. Very close.
And thanks again to Guru.
I think my draft went reasonable well. Top 4 picks, Braun, Markakis, , Brandon Phillips, D. Lee ( what a comeback season ) all did about what I expected, or even better. 7th round pick, King Felix, if not AL Cy Young, certainly was mine.
Krod ( 5th ), and Cordero ( 8th ), added value to my team.
Rock solid later picks, Span ( 16th ), Bartlett ( 17th, WOW ) and Scutaro ( 24th ) all provided value well advanced of their draft position.
Middle rounds failed me however: Peralta ( 6th ) Blah Beltre ( 9th ) Blah again Volquez ( 10th ) injured most of the season Santana ( 11th ) injured early on, so-so after Milledge ( 12th ) to the minors after a few weeks Jacobs ( 13th ) Blah again Putz ( 15th ) well you get the picture
I think the salvation of my season was constantly pounding the waiver wire. Pick ups Happ and Blackburn ( along with Jacobs )were turned into Kendry Morales, McCutcheon and Marmol ( later named closer ). From that point on my offense kicked into gear. Kurt Suzuki ended up ranked 151 overall, not bad for a catcher and certainly better than what ever bum I drafted. Latos added 4 wins before being shut down. Cueto, Peavy, Garland, Dice K,and Hudson all added to the cause adding some much needed late season W's ( 11 in total ). Marlon Byrd was great also.
Biggest mistake was trading J Weaver for Pence, although Weaver never really matched his early season success, Pence didn't really contribute much, but I thought I could spare the innings as I was way over projections at that time.
I can't really say I learned anything, reinforced is probably a better way to put it: 1) Never wait on a player in the draft, he'll be long gone 2) No matter how fast you think you are to react to news, someone always seems to beat you to the waiver list. In my case it always seemd to be Coldwater Coyotes.
Great fun, great league and look forward to next year.

How to fail miserably in fantasy baseball year 2009 - first 4 picks - Josh Hamilton (injury and perhaps excess partying), Manny (trying to conceive), Chris Davis (a threat to the mendoza line and would have obliterated the strikeout record but for the merciful demotion, and Joey Votto (depression). It did not get much better from there as my next pick was Marmol who could not find the strike zone until after the all-star break and was not named the closer out of the gate. Add in Dice K and Kazmir and it is not difficult to see how I rocketed to last place. Did I mention that I also drafted Jose Arrendondo and Manuel Corpus? Three good picks - Michael Young (6.01), Jose Lopez (9.16), and Kendry Morales (15.16) out of the first 15 rounds. Yikes! Just an epic draft disaster all the way around. Since I do not believe my wife reads this board I am going to blame her for my troubles as she scheduled a family vacation to isolated parts of New Mexico during prime draft time which left me without late breaking information regarding closer to be situations, David Price starting in the minors, Chris Davis actually can't hit, etc. In case she does read this board, it was of course a great time spent with my family and the fault is soley mine. I did however greatly enjoy the challenge of the league and hope that I was not viewed as dead weight as I did try to overcome all of the above throughout the season. I will be back!

Worst picks: Sizemore (round 1) Soto (6) JJ Hardy (7)
Best picks: Wainwright (11) Mark Reynolds (12) Wandy Rodriguez (17) Cody Ross (18) JP Howell (21)
Most useful free agent pickups: Phil Hughes (68 IP, 79 Ks, 6 wins, 3 saves, 3.04/1.10) Edwin Jackson (169 IP, 126 Ks, 11 wins, 3.89/1.31) Bronson Arroyo (75 IP, 45 Ks, 5 wins, 1.55/0.90)
As has been my strategy in recent years, I deferred on starting pitching during the draft, and loaded up on hitting. The pitching deferral didn't hurt at all. I had the most wins, and 14 ranking points in both Ks and ERA. I entered the season with only one bona fide closer (Soria), but managed to supplement his 30 saves with another 24, most coming from J.P. Howell. I gave up too early on Nolasco, dropping him when he was sent down to the minors. But that didn't really hurt me, as my pitching held up well.
In hitting, my 2nd (Youkilis) and 4th (Dunn) rounders did well. McLouth (rnd 3) was OK, although performed more like a 5th rounder. But getting disappointing results from my hitting picks in rounds 1, 6, and 7 took its toll, with the results that my hitting stats were very mediocre.
So all told, I'm satisfied with my 5th place finish, especially since I was only a point from finishing 7th.

It would be awesome if someone from RIBC would post the list of the teams in order of 1st to last with the person's rotoguru handle next to their team. I'm curious whose team is whose and in some cases you can't tell from the team name. Thanks in advance!

Bash Brothers bashed us all. I thought that he'd start losing a lot of points as the season wore on but it never happened. As I didn't design my team to put up a lot of points in saves and sb's I never had a chance of winning this season. I figured that shooting for 120-130 pts would give a good shot at winning. 140-150 was never part of the game plan.
just taking this chance to look at my draft picks and team log:
1.02 Albert Pujols was awesome 186/568 124 135 16 .443 .658 2.15 Carlos Lee acceptable 183/610 65 102 5 .343 .489 3.02 Cole Hamels BAD, but better than Webb! 193.2 10 0 168 4.32 1.29 4.15 Dan Haren awesome 229.1 14 0 223 3.14 1.00 5.02 Joe Nathan great as always 67.0 2 47 87 2.15 0.93 6.15 Corey Hart bad pick 86/332 51 33 8 .332 .413 7.02 Ryan Zimmerman boom goes the dynamite, traded late for greinke and cantu 145/484 91 84 2 .375 .521 8.15 Alex Gordon terrible 14/71 9 8 2 .296 .324 9.02 Howie Kendrick grrrrrr 34/156 21 16 6 .269 .333 10.15 Chris Young dog poop 11/69 6 3 3 .194 .261 11.02 Miguel Tejada pretty good, traded for Mariano Rivera 133/405 54 61 3 .358 .477 12.15 Chris Young not good, not good at all 67.2 4 0 48 5.05 1.37 13.02 Troy Percival should have known 11.1 0 6 7 6.35 1.68 14.15 J.D. Pujols, Lee, Scott, Drew, Haren, Nathan, and Hamels were the only players to stay on my roster the full season.
Most notable FA and trade adds: decent runs from Garko, J.Fox, Prado
got a little production from Coghlan and C.Gonzlez then traded them for Blanton and Bourne, so they were good pickups
Zobrist was a monster 133/453 83 74 16 .408 .514
Cantu tore the cover off the ball after I traded for him
Jarrod Washburn, a lot of decent innings 117.0 6 0 60 3.46 1.14
Jonathan Sanchez, only 15 IP but I got the right ones! 15.0 1 0 19 1.80 0.33
Rivera and Capps both did well for me, Blanton was so-so
Greinke, wish I had him all season obviously! 39.0 3 0 40 1.38 1.05
I guess we had pretty good competition for 2nd through 6th anyway. Looking forward to next season, and hoping we won't have so many inactive managers. Why fight your way into RIBC and then go inactive? Just do some public yahoo leagues if that's your style.
Coldwater Coyotes should get invited back just based on the sheer volume of roster moves. 183 must be a record!
Sorry for all the numbers and length of this post. It's mostly for my own amusement, and future reference for myself.

Wow, what a season, what a ride. As always, special thanks to guru. I'd like to kick off this post by recapping my season first. [draft position in ( )] The 1st half outburst of Beltran (1st), Longoria(2nd), Adrian Gonzalez(3rd), Jeter(5th), Hunter(10th), Cantu(14th), Adam Lind(20th), and Inge(23rd) have my lineup look like an all-star team. And I've also got Victorino (6th), Orlando Hudson(12th), Nick Johnson(16th) who either performed steadily or better than expected. These guys had me jump out of the gate quickly. By the end of May, I was leading comfortably in almost all hitting categories (except for SB). As for my pitching, my patriotic pick of Wang (13th) and his devastating ERA/WHIP hit me hard early on. Fortunately, outstanding performance by Greinke (7th), Vazquez (8th) and Josh Johnson (11th) had me stay in the middle of the pack. It was not a coincidence that after I dumped Wang and picked up Porcello (and subsequently Wells), my ranking in every pitching categories started to climb. Of course, I was lucky to have 3 decent closers who performed as expected (Paplebon, 4th), better than expected (Wilson, 9th), or almost unexpectedly (Rodney, 24th). [My pitching could actually be better. At the 13th round, I was seriously considering about picking Carpenter (he was still available). But with the pick of Josh Johnson, I thought it would be too risky to have 2 SPs returning from serious injuries....] Commanding lead in hitting and Wang's perfomance earlier in the seaon had me think about trading for a SP. The swap of Lind for Lilly in early May was a good one, and I thought the trade made both teams better. While sitting on top of 4 hitting categories and ranking 3rd/4th in SB (totally 77 hitting points), I kept climbing in every pitching categories and had my team peak at around 153 total points. I was dreaming about a record-setting total points for an RIBC champion in early June. But bad things and injury bugs inevitably came. A trip to Berlin cost me the chance of grabbing McCutchen (a big blow especially considering I had been keeping an eye on him all season; I did draft him in the 25th round), and then my hitters stopped hitting one by one. First Gonzalez, Cantu, then Longoria and Inge (who totally disappeared after the ASB). Subsequently Hunter and Beltran went on DL. All of a sudden, my bashing boys were gone. In spite of decent pick-up of the likes of Garrett Jones, Gutierrez, and Adam Kennedy (the latter two were servicable at most), I never regained the dominance in hitting. Had the season gone longer, I would definitely have fallen out of 1st place owing to my deficiency in hitting. At the end of the day, I actually felt relieved that it was finally over. I was half right on the late-season Greinke trading. I believed trading him wouldn't cost me much in the pitching categories. I was right on that as retaining him would have gained me only one pitching point in the W category. But I was totally wrong on the other part of the trade - Cantu and Zimmerman. As I said earlier, Cantu was a throw-in basically because I could not tolerate his meager production since mid-season (and I still got Gonzalez, Longoria, and Jones to fill in my 3 CIs). In the mean time, Zimmerman was as hot as Pujols at the time of the trade. Well, Cantu must be angered by the trade, as he caught fire and outhit almost every 3B (including Zimmerman, of course) after the trade. What a trade! I seriously think I should at least get some share of Holt's No 3. trophy. ^_^ It's been more than 10 years since my first experience with the fantasy baseball. Early on, it's strictly salary-cap fantasy baseball for me. And it's RIBC only for me during the last 4 years. From the experience of the game, I knew that one had to be lucky to be good in this game. I was lucky enough to win the ultimate trophy in fantasy baseball twice, once in 2004 (TSN baseball, in the name of ShortTandemRepeat), and this year in RIBC. I really enjoyed this game very much. But after reaching the top, I was leaning toward calling it quits because I didn't think I could further maximize my joy in this game. But who knows what will happen next, just like the unpredictability in fantasy baseball. I'd like to borrow Khahan's words from his post, which is very classical -- "Who knows, maybe I'll pull a Brett Favre and sign up for some teams at the last minute next season." I'd also like to pay my tribute to Dave R, the most revered competitor in this game. Year in, year out, I watched his steps closely. Seldom does he make wrong moves in this game. It's a great honor to be able to compete with him on a regular basis. And I was greatly flattered by the congratulatory words from Dave, both this time and back in 2004. Thanks everybody for making this game so competitive. See you next year. Maybe. Maybe not.

And jseth333= vampireweekend...
Think I'll post my recap soon, in the meantime, a couple quick thoughts...
Bash Brothers wins it in a rout! It would be sweet to walk away after a win like that, but I think the temptation to repeat will be even sweeter for you.
Don't know if it was noted anywhere, and I understand that access and time are sometimes hard to come by, but we didn't have any league activity for awhile from:
Bags2Riches (Aug26) Sandwich Statics (Aug2) The Red Scorpions (Aug30)
