Red Sox acquire Jeremy Hermida. Some teams just buy championships.

The Tigers have some good young arms on the farm, but they have really no good bats down there. I really like Scherzer and think he'll plug right into the starting lineup. Don't know much about Schlereth but it looks like he was brought along nicely by AZ. Maybe he'll come out of camp with a starting job but he seems, like Coke, to be a holder, no more.

But Jackson is a very good prospect--he played up the road from me in Scranton and really is an exciting player. He's not the home run hitter Granderson is, but he's fast and will get on base a lot.

All in all, I would have thought the Tigers would get more than one hitter out of the deal.

I think the Tigers did better than most will initially give them credit for. They are obviously desperately hamstrung financially and did get a nice young hitter and two electric arms, along with a very useful lefty in Coke. But as noted above, which Edwin Jackson is the REAL Edwin Jackson? This guy toiled for years before finally harnessing a nice portion of his potential.

I'm not thrilled with what AZ did. Unless they think Scherzer is a Tommy John surgery (or shoulder surgery) just waiting to happen, I don't like it from their perspective.

I love Granderson's defense in CF, especially if Damon returns to LF. I just hope from NYY's sake we get AT LEAST the 2008 Granderson....or something between the 2007 and 2008 Granderson at the plate. Despite the 30 HR's, IMO Granderson's 2009 sucked by comparison.

Yeah, I know Edwin is not the second coming of Cy Young--I suspect much of that had to do with Leyland running him out there until his arm fell off down the stretch (which, I suppose, was likely to happen again). Still, he was a very solid #2-#3 type starter on a team which has little to no depth in the starting rotation.

I may be vastly underrating Scherzer and/or Austin Jackson. Jackson in particular may be a very nice player someday, but I don't think he'll be ready to contribute meaningfully in 2010.

Scherzer is a guy who pitched into the eighth inning exactly twice last year in 30 starts, and managed at least 7 complete in all of six games. For comparison, Jackson went into the eighth seven times, and got 7 complete innings in 17 of his 33 starts. Which means that one of two things are liable to happen: Leyland is going to run Scherzer crying to Dr. James Andrews by mid-June, or he's going to continue to be a six-inning pitcher for the foreseeable future. If it's the latter, the Tigers bullpen isn't equipped to deal with that. The staff needed a real innings-eater. Scherzer is NOT that guy.

I know that Scherzer and Austin Jackson may mature, and that's great, but the division is completely there for the taking again in 2010. Getting guys for 2-3 years from now isn't going to help, because the competition may well be better then. I don't think there's anyone out there thinking that 2010 Granderson + EJack < 2010 Scherzer + AJack.

Which ultimately means that it's a pay cutting move, and that's a hard thing for me to get excited about, even if it's "necessary".

Not that anyone cares, but the Rangers move Millwood to Baltimore for Ray and apparently use the savings to pick up Rich Harden from the Cubs.

Hmm.

That combined with the Lackey signing sure does seem to drive Lowe's (and Vazquez') value much higher all of a sudden.

Too bad Cliff Lee -- you wanted too much $$$ for your extension and now you are off to
Seattle... It was nice while it lasted -- you are a fine pitcher and we enjoyed your stay with us.

If Cole comes back strong we have a nice R L punch.

Punk - the latest version have them sending Aumont and an OF prospect I haven't heard of (i.e. NOT Michael Saunders) for a year of Cliff Lee. I know Aumont has been rather enigmatic, but of course, kind of like Morrow, the Mariners have F-d with him so badly between the pen and starting he probably doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. Anyway, I'm assuming they've soured on him.

If they lose Lee in a year, they get 2 draft picks. Not bad.

Strange that the Phillies trade Lee, and "swap" prospects - giving up Taylor and Drabek but getting Aumont and the OF I haven't heard of. Halladay signs a reasonable 3-year extension vs. Lee's supposed "Sabathia" demands. I see all of the logic for the Phillies......hopefully they didn't downgrade too much in those prospects.

Red Sox get Mike Cameron for 2 years. I have no idea why they did this. His best asset is his CF defense and with Ellsbury they don't need that. It will add some pop to the bottom of the lineup I guess, but I always hated his other stats that went with the HR/SB.

Frankly - (before Granderson) he DID make good sense for the Yankees...

Sounds as if Theo is at least contemplating Buchholz and Ellsbury for Adrian Gonzalez - guess that would seem to make the Cameron signing less of an oddity.

Hard not to like this. Mike Dunn is a hard piece to lose, but he is quite replaceable and to get a workhorse like Vazquez it's a no-brainer.

What a battle of rotations between Boston and New York in the East.

Nice move by the Yankees. I sure would love it if my team got Javy Vazquez, Nick Johnson, and Curtis Granderson all in one offseason. Not that my team is inactive or anything.

I'm very glad Vazquez is with the Yankees. My recollection of him is a tough pitcher to face early in the season, but he fades down the stretch. He is also prone to streakiness. When he rings up a bad start, you know 2 or 3 more are coming.

Vazquez to Yanks

This is the kind of trade that both teams will regret. I don't think the Braves got much, I think very little of Melky Cabrera. On the other hand, though Vazquez has great peripherals year after year, he never pitches as well as his stuff. He was terrible in the Bronx in 2004 and probably will be again in 2010.

Brandon Morrow for two peeps and a candy cane.

Okay, it was Brandon League and Class A outfield prospect Yohermyn Chavez.

This is pathetic, but it's probably for the best. This is what the M's have to show for making the Big Mistake. In the 2006 draft they should have taken Tim Lincecum, you know, local boy, Washington Husky record for strikeouts. No, let's take the guy from Cal who has diabetes. Stupid. Morrow was taken 6th, Tiny Tim 8th. Did I mention he was raised right here in town?

Not really. He had a great first half and then an injury led to his down 2nd half. His overall numbers were still decent. Plus, there's a lot less pressure this go around as he's the 3rd or 4th starter. Even being an average pitcher might be an upgrade over what they had and it definitely strengthens the bullpen as Joba or Hughes will be moved there now. Plus, the Yankees didn't give up anything of much value.

Actually, the Yankees drafted Mark Prior out of high school, but he chose to go to USC instead where he was eventually drafted by the Cubs.

that was actually the THIRD time Lincecum was drafted.

The Cubs took him in the 48th round out of HS, but he didn't sign. Two years later, the Indians drafted him in the 42nd round, but again he didn't sign.

the following year, the Giants indeed took him in the first round, at #10. Although some of guys drafted ahead of him might make the GMs who drafted them curse themselves, i wouldn't say it's all of them.

Evan Longoria was taken ahead of Lincecum, and he's not a bad consolation prize at all. Clayton Kershaw was also picked ahead of him, and it still looks like he'll live up to his potential.

Not really pleased with the Mike Cameron or Beltre signings for the Red Sox, as well as losing Bay.
While the defense will be better, their offense will be really hurting. Unless Beltre can be Lowell "the sequel" and revive his career hitting off the wall.

A buddy of mine met Brian Cashman at a Bobby Valentine charity event yesterday and of course my buddy peppered Cashman with questions about the Yankee 'left field situation'. Cashman replied that the way they are planning it, Granderson would be playing left (not center) and Brett Gardiner would be the full time centerfielder.
