It would be exciting to see this come about, I'm always for more baseball.

Story

The United States and Japanese baseball champions could meet in a Global World Series, Japanese daily Nikkan Sports reported Thursday.

Nippon Professional Baseball commissioner Ryozo Kato was quoted as saying his Major League Baseball counterpart, Bud Selig, had agreed the winners of the two countries' professional leagues should play each other.

"I was surprised, Mr. Selig said he wants to realize the plan before his tenure ends," Kato told Nikkan Sports.

I imagine even if the owners and players go for this, there are so many logistics to work out. Not the least of which is travel, timing the two country's league championships to be about the same time, and November weather. To a lesser extent figuring out 'home field advantage', DH or not DH (If an NL team is MLB champ), syncing up rules, rosters, player incentive, and so on.

Then of course this is just Japan and US, what about including other country's professional league champion.

I can't imagine why teams would want to do a real world-wide series. This reminds me of the people who do American Idol deciding to do a "World Idol" of all the individual country winners having one big contest. What it did was make losers out of all but one.

Who wants to win the World Series and then have to play another series for the right to be called a champion?

While it would be cool in the abstract, I think it would be more feasible as something like the Allstar game. Maybe do it like the pro-bowl. Build a stadium in Fiji pay participants 50K, and give them and their families a nice holiday.

They need to pay the winning team's players a million apiece. Granted, the Yankees hardly need it. But I can't imagine they'd play as hard for this as they would for the All-Star Game (which counts).
