22.12-Gio Gonzalez, SP, OAK

I had Gonzalez on my team in 2009 hoping that he would find his control and be a real sleeper. He did not, so I am giving him a 2nd chance to break out for the Zephyrs in 2010.

22.13, Daric Barton ,1B ,OAK

Berkman’s injury status is unsettled, so I need another CI who should play right away. Barton was all the rage a few years ago and then became a big fantasy disappointment last year. He is still very young, so there is some hope he might start turning things around. If not, this comes as a small investment.

22.14 Chris Dickerson, OF, Cin

It looks like Dickerson may be in a platoon situation with the Reds, but as a lefty, he should still see a decent amount of action should I need to plug him in the lineup. Decent combination of speed and high .obp - maybe they'll make an everyday leadoff man out of him.

22.15 Alfredo Aceves RP NYY

At the end of round 20 (35 picks ago), I made a 15-man queue, and Aceves was #1 on the list. I didn't take him 30 picks ago, so I'll take him here. He's a long reliever for the Yankees that was fairly valuable last season, as he was able to vulture his way to a 10-1 record, with good K/9 numbers. He's having a solid Spring, so no reason to expect anything less this year. Hopefully.

rowand should start as leadoff hitter, his average in this spring is .500, i know he's not fast and young anymore but i hope his avg is not going to drop too soon...

23.01 Ian Kennedy SP ARI
kennedy is the third pitcher in the rotation for the d-backs, he had a good era and some k's in last spring training. i'm curious to see him in action at home, maybe it's dangerous and i should only play him when d-backs play away matches...let'see

23.02 Brandon Wood 3B LAA

A former first-round pick and top prospect, Wood has been nothing but disappointing. In 224 major league ABs, he has a .222 OBP, 74 Ks, and only 7 BBs. But he has the starting job for the Angels, and is only 25 years old, so I still have hope (I think that's only still true for me and Wood's Mom).

23.03 Ervin Santana, SP, Ana

Since Joba has been named a reliever, I really only had 3 starting pitchers. I do have a slew of solid relievers, however. I chose Santana not necessarily for him to be a staple in my rotation, but really I'll probably take a wait-and-see approach with Santana. He was a top starter two years ago, but last season battled injuries and never got an track. So, lots of upside here for a late round pick.

23.04, Mike Aviles, SS, KC

Likely to start on the DL or the minors, so this is a stash on the bench strategy. Aviles brings a good bat to the KC lineup. Considering the other weak hitting MI they have, I imagine that as soon as his elbow is recovered, Aviles will return as the starting SS. He has already begun playing SS in the spring, so I don’t think he will be out of the lineup for very long.

23.05-Jeff Francoeur, OF, NYM

Francoeur is another 1st round draft pick who never lived up to his potential. He played well after being traded to the NYMs and the hope is that this change will enable him to produce again in 2010. The only problem is that the Mets have a history of making very poor trades. Think Jim Fregosi.

23.10 Jose Mijares, RP, Min

There’s a chance he could get some saves, although I’m sure that it will take a minor miracle for that to actually happen since he’s really just a lefty specialist. He had 27 holds and a 2.34 ERA last season, so I guess there’s a possibility that he’ll close if Rauch and Guerrier fail early on.

23.12 CJ Wilson, SP/RP, Tex
He is supposed to be stretched out to be a starter this year. And so far it looks like that is how he will start but since I live here I know that his true value is in the bullpen. If he can continue to K guys as a starter then even better but I am actually waiting for him to fall on his face as a starter and go back to Dominating in the pen.

23.13 Clayton Richard SP SD

I had to hastily leave a queue for this pick, and probably wouldn't have taken Richard if I were around. But that's OK. Remembering we are near the end of the draft, I'll keep my fingers crossed with this selection.

Clayton needs to improve his control, to his minor league level of 2.5 walks per 9 innings, or his spot on team SANFORDORS could be over shortly.

At least as the 4th or 5th started for the Padres, I should be able to make a decision on him early on.

23.14 J.J. Putz, RP, ChW
This has been a brutal draft for setup/middle relievers. I was recently discussing our draft with my son, who is drafting in one of the AA leagues. He listed off the three relievers that he took in rounds 18-20. All three were gone by round 17 in this draft.

So why is Putz still available? Disappointing 2009, coming back from elbow surgery. I guess that’s enough – although I fully expected him to disappear earlier, as he may be the first fallback option if Jenks gets injured or falters. Now that I have both Putz and Thornton, that’s what I’m going to have to root for, I guess. (Sorry, Uptown!)

Most of the forecasts I follow aren’t very upbeat on Putz, but all seem to think he could be second in line to close for the White Sox, so I’ll pick him up, and then look for a Jenks voodoo doll to start torturing.

23.16 Delmon Young OF MIN

Just a late rd sleeper pick. Former #1 overall draft pick (2003), has some great minor league seasons under his belt, has some speed and power, but hasn't been anything better than mediocre in the majors yet. He's still only 24 though, so people need to cut him some slack. He still may turn out to be worth that #1 pick. I'll hang on to him for a while and see how it goes.

24.01 Felipe Lopez 2B STL

You never know what kind of season Lopez is going to have. He doesn't exactly have a starting job right now, but LaRussa will get him AB's. He may become eligible at everything but C by the time the season is over. He had an .810 OPS in 680 PA last season. That's pretty good. And he had an OPS of .964 during his previous stint with StL, so we'll see how it goes.
I thought pretty long and hard about Branyan here. Also checked out Thome, but I'm not sure about his playing time. I layed off on Jaime Garcia because I figured there was a 100% chance he'd be available with my 25th rd pick, and oddly enough, Guru took him just a few picks after this one. Also considered Brad Penny for quite a while.

Gomes won the starting LF job for the Reds. He had good power numbers last season in a part-time role. At 29 years old , this is probably his last chance for this one-time promising OF to become a starter and I am guessing he will make the most of the opportunity.

24.04 Juan Gutierrez RP ARI

Looking at this point for a setup guy who might, with any luck, end up in a closers role. Gutierrez seemed to thrive last year after being permanently moved to the bullpen as set up man for Qualls. Juan K's nearly a batter an inning, and when Qualls went down last year moved into the closers role, converting all seven save opportunities.

So if Qualls goes down again, I might have fallen into some additional saves

They say he has some speed and power although his numbers show otherwise. Has streaks of good and bad last season. Best case is he could be a 20/20 guy if things break right but as my 3rd guy off the bench, I'll have to hope he does the good things when my other hitters have off days.

A complete flier, as Aardsma is pretty widely thought of to be amongst the "pretender closers" out there because his history in MLB never predicted the wild success he had in 2009. If he flops, it's between Lowe and Brandon League as to who might mop up the saves.

Just trying to add a potential good arm to my bench in the event one of my staff gets injured. Not looking for anything special at this poin (he's not even in the initial rotation) but it looks like he'll be used eventually if someone is injured (as a starter)or he'll probabably be long relief which can beneficial for ERA, Whip, K's and sometimes wins.

Nolan Ryan is changing things in Texas! (Shout out to the Dan LeBatard show listeners out there. If you are not one of them, give the podcast a try.) All I know about this guy is that he is coming back from Japan after some success. Maybe he can use his experience to surprise some people. I went to pick him and it wasn't letting me... refreshed kafenatid and saw that tequila had just chosen him on the turn. More searching revealed that Kotchman had won the starting position in Seattle. Kotchman had an .840 OPS a few years ago for the Angels, and I'll gladly take that as my stop-gap solution if I need it.

Aside from pitchers, this is the position most likely to see time on the DL, or days off simply for rest. With that in mind I always like to carry a second catcher to sneak in a few extra ABs which help with the counting numbers (provided the AVGS aren't hurt too much) I was surprised to see Bengie still around. I guess everone is anticipating him getting shunted aside to make room for a certain minor leaguer to be called up after June 1. Anyway he's here, and will get plenty of work in the first two months, so once I figure out the rotation used for my catchers I'll slip Molina in on Napoli's days off.

Left a queue of a half dozen SP since I was not going to be around for round 25, just looking for someone to man the end of my rotation. Kawakami had some hard luck losses for Atlanta last year which may have allowed him to win 10-12 instead of 7, with an ERA around 4. Out of a 25th rounder, that is about all I can expect as I keep my eyes on a hot free agent if I get trigger happy. Just to be safe, I actually put two relievers behind Kenshin that I'd not want to see on my roster, both remained undrafted - not sure if I can mention them but one is actually the Dodger opening day starter via Texas and Philadelphia the other is the oft injured ex-Yankee now on the Twins.

Last pick....

It's odd, in Rotowire's 2010 " outlook " they state Joyce will likely go to the minors, as there isn't room for him with the big club. Yet their depth charts have him penciled in as the starter in RF.

He's having some elbow issues which may or may not land him on the DL to start the season, but it doesn't sound serious.

So what am I getting? A 25 year old, full of potential, one with a major league career OPS of almost .800, albeit in limited action. Someone who hit 16 HR's and stole 14 bases after being sent down to the minors last year.

Someone who will quickly sent back to the waiver list if he doesn't work out.

I had intended to nab another starting pitcher here, but there really wasn’t anyone I could settle on, and the likelihood is that whoever I picked up would be tossed back before the end of April.

Raburn has been hitting well this spring (.540/650), and while he isn’t necessarily a full time starter, I’m sure he’ll get action as long as he hits like this. I may need an extra hitter in the early going, as J.D. Drew hasn’t even been hitting his weight this spring. I’ll take him for now, and see what develops. Eventually, I’ll probably want to drop a hitter in favor of a pitcher, but that can wait.

Hopefully he sucked so hard last season because he had to play so much third base. He had a .909 OPS in 2009, a .925 OPS in AAA in 2007, an .880 OPS in AA in 2003 (he's 29 now), and he's qualified at 2B and 3B. I only have Rolen at 3B atm so this helps. There were a lot of high hopes for Fontenot last season. Maybe things will come together for him this year. Too bad that he is a stinky Cub. Now I have two of them.
