2010 Supplemental Draft

2010 Draft Discussion

2010 Keeper Declarations

2010 Preseason Discussion

Welcome to Season 8! Waivers have been turned on and our 2009 Champion, Peter N, is ready to defend his title. 19 other managers stand in his way.

We will now move all discussion to this thread. Please re-read the rules. They are very detailed and have a lot of information about Prospects. I re-read them again before I started the season to be sure I wasn't missing anything.

Prospects who are in the CBS database all have a slaary of 1. It's hard to see it at times if you're not looking for it on the CBS player page. It has Salary: 1 and you will get a big yellow flag if you pick one up. If this happens, you need to immediately drop him. There is only one Prospect (Brandon Wood) left that was grandfathered. Remember the P-draft occurs during the All-Star Break.

Waivers will run at approx 2 am ET on Sunday morning. Once waivers run, all players will be a FA unless they were releasedwithin the last two days. Waiver period is one full day after the day he goes on waivers.

There is one game on Sunday night so we still have some time. Many will be enjoying your Easter Weekend. For those of you who are around, feel free to discuss the draft/strategy/players/reaches or general comments. I am not going to start a thread for that as typically only a third or less use it.

Best of Luck!

1047: That rarely happens with us. Usually it is merely the fact that someone needs to replace a player and they find one and pick them up and then keep looking and find someone else they like better. CBS and ESPN has the same issue. I like the Y! rule better but def not enough to go to Y! just because of that.

WAIT

Here's the answer to 1041. ESPN works exactly like you would expect and want: if you pick up a player and then immediately drop him, he is still a free agent (not on waivers). I just verified this in basketball.

Re: 1048 (Toral). Maybe you're counting the votes using the metric system, but I think ESPN is in the lead. Does anyone want to take a quick straw poll?

OK, just from my knowledge of all three sites.
I'm done with CBS.
As far as ESPN vs Yahoo, not sure either really matters.
I've commished in Yahoo, but not ESPN.
I do know some of our rules could make life tough, but I think we just have to make the change based on the knowledge that we might have to make some rules changes.

Just my $.02

Bottom line, I can live with either one.

I played a full season on both Yahoo! and ESPN in the RIBC system in the same year a few years ago, and prefer Yahoo! I was only a commissioner in Yahoo!; perhaps if I had commisionered in ESPN I would like it better. ESPN was OK. Yahoo! rates 9, ESPN 7.5.

You played two leagues in the RIBC system in the same year? Interesting.

True, I am overly excited about my product. But if you played a few years ago, that's hardly a comparison. There have been plenty of changes on both ends.

And #1057, I don't buy the "loads faster." Maybe before, but not lately.

If things are split 50/50-ish or with no strong consensus, the Commishes will likely decide this based upon the quality of the Commish controls and ease of assimilation (throwing in a Star Trek reference for Guru) to our rules. hen's exuberence is appreciated, and his ties to the product should be used to our advantage, not as a basis of ridicule.

Let's get productive, people. Thanks.

I can search ESPN's Free Agent quicker... I like that and find it easier to sort by column headers etc. BUT since it has the funky ranking system I find it more difficult to interpret at times. As I said before, its hard to compare two guys -- can't say "he's a 24th ranked player L30, 64th best for the season" which makes trade discussion difficult.

"You played two leagues in the RIBC system in the same year? Interesting."

Indeed. Played and commissionered in AAA and joined an AA league to fill it up -- something that happens often. Both with Guru's approval. Filling up AA leagues in RI*C is obviously something you've never even thought of. Have you ever been in one?

And the fact that you don't know that -- that some people end up playing in 2 RI*C leagues because they join the AA league to fill it up shows your lack of knowledge of this site and its culture.

I am indifferent towards either ESPN or Yahoo. I think whatever we decide, some rules will have to be changed/re-interpreted, or even some new rules made to accomodate new situations that wouldn't have happened at CBS.

Perhaps we should just hold a league vote?

I like how ESPN has the Constitution readily available. I don't even think Y! has one. I also like how we can have multiple owners and add/remove a team if need be. Also, you can change stats or team/player status retroactive if need be. I don't think we can in Y!. This is especially important if there is a prospect issue.

As far as a vote goes, I am not comfy that I have enough info and I know the league as a whole is not. I definitely disagree with bh that ESPN is better than CBS. I'm so tired of CBS' BS though and their cost keeps going higher.

This is very important, and I assumed this was something we would lose moving from CBS. If ESPheN has this feature, I would lean towards ESPN.

In fact, I thought I had to do that our first season of ESPN Hoops, but I can't remember for sure. Regardless, it cannot do what all CBS could do. I have several people in ESPN to also have a look at things as well.

Good grief!

I've stayed out for a while and frankly do not know anything about ESPN to cast a vote for or against. I find Yahoo easy to use and have commished in it for 3 years now. It sounds like the prospects thing is a big issue -- so ref sends out a list at the beginning of the season. We all post it into our desktop folders or bulletin boards and it is up to each manager not to screw it up!! Penalty -- first time weak; after that stronger penalty.

For ESPN, under Games Played Limits:

Batters 1530 Games Played (enforced by position)

I guess this means each batter position gets 1530 games? We should probably change this to 170, right?

1074 isn't a big issue. We can get around that if it comes up.

1075, I think that means 1530 divided by your slots. Assuming 9 slots, that's 170 per slot. So obviously this will get us what we need.

Finally, for 1068, can someone give me a sense of how many times that has happened in the past? If it's 1 or 2 times a year, I think I have an answer. If it's 10 or 15, that might be harder.

1076: The issue of someone incorrectly picking up a prospect was common -- 10 times a year or so. But with CBS' salary warnings, I think I can only remember ONE time in my history that a prospect actually accumulated stats for the wrong team.

Others might have better memories.

It divides by slots, that's why I had to multiply the ABs--however that seems to do the same thing for IPs per slot which is not what we want at all. Since no one ever hits the AB threshold, maybe we not worry about slots?

I just don't think Yahoo can handle everything we need from a commish standpoint and also get our prospects and constituion on the site. Like I said before, we will have to change some of our rules based on what site we go to. The 5/10 elig to 10/20 is a big deal too--but it is what it is.

If not for the warning flag in CBS, we would prob get 100+ prospect pick-ups per year w/o being dropped. I don't think anyone really understands how much of an issue this is going to be. We are talking as many as 60 prospects and about 2/3 of those are going to be in the player pool and prob half of those will be looked at to be picked up--many multiple times. This time there won't be that huge flag of illegal and commishs won't get the alerts either.

It would be great if a commish could add a player to a no-add list. Obviously having a minor league taxi squad that didn't count against roster would be ideal but I don't think that will ever happen.

I'm working to get us a no-add list, but it's a lot more complicated than the trade deadline.

I'm not sure I buy that number: 100 prospect pickups in a year. The flag doesn't appear until you've already picked up someone, so I would think the number would stay consistent year to year. From what I remember, there were about 10 instances of someone picking up a player. Thanks to the flag or to vigilance, no stats were accumulated. We'll have to pay more attention this year, but I can't imagine the end result is going to be too catastrophic.

1084: Don't be so sure about that. My number was based upon people that ACTUALLY complete the illegal pickup, and then must drop the player once the roster warning hits them upside the head. What we don't see are the dozens and dozens of times someone went to the player screen with the FULL INTENT of picking someone up, but DIDN'T because we had the salary designation there.

I too am leaning towards ESPN solely based upon superior Commish controls, which we really have to consider first and foremost. If both sites were equal, we could make the decision based upon league members' personal preferences...but it doesn't look like that will be the case.

Helluva thread. Sheesh!

Species makes a good point about the salary designations in the CBS format (post 1085).

Very familiar with the Yahoo format and not at all with the ESPN so perhaps this isn't the most informed of decisions, but it seems there are a lot of us that have tons of playing and commish experience with Yahoo. That overall level of comfort and familiarity with the system probably counts for something. Also, if it weren't a pretty good platform, we'd all hate it as much as we do the CBS game.

Not sure what mobile apps are available specifically for the ESPN baseball game, but the free Yahoo option is decent enough.

re: 1040
Pretty sure that this "player lock" issue is configurable using the "Allow roster changes" setting. We had that problem one season - hated it - and made damn sure we changed the setting back the next season.

Also, re: 1040, Yahoo has been offering the StatTracker free of charge. They've rolled this out free to all their sports over the course of the last couple years or so, AFAIK.

No chance I can catch up to all the discussion here, but my personal preference would be to go Yahoo.

Cussed out many of you for owning the prospect rights to a guy I wanted to pick up. I think this issue has high potential to be a major PIA for the commishes. Been down this road before with good intentions, but not so great results.

what if we expand the roster size by 3 and put our prospects on our rosters?
in most cases they are not on the big league roster, so putting them in a starting slot makes no sense. we would just need to monitor if someone starts a prospect which would automatically be 1 of his 3 call-ups. additionally we need to check if such a prospect slot is not used for a veteran player in case one of the prospects was called up.

1089: Have thought of that. Some have 5 + prospects as well. Problem is people using them or calling them up or not. You'd be surprised how many times they'd be used and say they forgot he was a prospect or whether they were called up currently or not. The worst part is others signing guys over the roster limit that have no ties to prospects.

Do any of you use your cell phones for this? If so, I am confident the ESPN experience is better than Yahoo (and much better than CBS). I'd be happy to talk through more details if people that that will make a difference.

If the commish controls are better on ESPN, then let's do it. I've been a long time user of Yahoo and only used ESPN for the first time last year and it was no big deal figuring stuff out. I liked it just fine. After using both, I really don't see a big difference in managing a team on either site. And with more exposure to the ESPN site, I might even prefer it.

In a league this size, I think we need to make things as easy as possible for the commissioners.

But we do need to get off the pot and move forward so we can make any necessary changes to accommodate the new site.

I do hope that we can find a satisfactory solution to the prospect issue. We don't need to have that become a major problem.

But I'm over debating which site to use. We have more important issues to discuss and we need to move on to them.

If we use ESPN, I think I could build a simple automated routine to check all player adds and compare the names against a master list of prospects. If a match is found, an email alert could be sent to the commissioners. I could set it up to automatically run every hour or so during the season.

This wouldn't stop people from making those moves, but should provide an early alert so that an invalid player could be removed fairly quickly.

I could probably do it for a Yahoo league, too, although there are some more difficult security issues to overcome there. ESPN allows you view transactions without being logged in, so that's easier to program.
