Mental mistakes rampant.

"Kids today aren't afraid because they don't take responsibility for their mistakes anymore,'' said Rangers manager Ron Washington. "I see that in the game every single day.''

Interesting read. Regarding instinctive vs. robotic play, something I've noticed by reading biographies about older players like DiMaggio is that back in the day people played a lot more baseball. They'd play in the street, empty lots, wherever. They didn't wait for an on official organized game to be scheduled.

The way our world is now, there are too many distractions. You might see a young player devoting some free time in the batting cage but you won't see many impromptu baseball games.

From my own experience of playing high school baseball, my head was so full of instructions and I had so little experience in actual game play that it was hard to do anything instinctively in a game. I don't think I ever had a chance just to play and enjoy a game of baseball.

I can imagine many draftees out of high school have played shockingly little baseball. Batting cage time and fly ball drills do not count.

What about video games? Do you think they teach kids anything about sports that proves useful later? Definitely, Madden has helped educate people about football formations. Anything else?

To always, always, always go for it on 4th down and to never ever punt.

This is just the usual sort of "those kids don't know how to play the game" thing that crochety baseball people have been saying for over a century. Full of nonsense like the stuff about how they always used to leave kids in the minors for 2,000 at bats or 500 inning pitched, which is flatly untrue. You would find few major league stars, ever, who had 2,000 minor league at bats.

They also used to award the MVP to guy with the most RBIs and Gold Gloves to the guy with the fewest errors.

Oh wait.
