Subject: Oswalt to the Phillies

He still needs to waive his no-trade clause, but that is expected to happen.
Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt. What other post-season contender has a top 3 to match that? |

Carpenter, Wainwright, Garcia?
Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner?
Kershaw, Billingsley, Kuroda?
Sabathia, Pettitte, Hughes?
Hudson, Hanson, Lowe?
True, pretty happy with the Phils.

Buehrle, Danks, Floyd ? I mean sure Peavy would have been better but that's still pretty formidable.
Phils have a pretty good chance if they can get past the Braves.

Carpenter, Wainwright, Garcia? Closest
Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner? Lincecum and Cain yes, bumgarner...come back in a few years. They can match 2 but not all 3.
Kershaw, Billingsley, Kuroda? Where's the experience? Certainly with time these 3 have the best chance of stacking up 1, 2, 3. But right now they don't have the time served and 'proven track record.'
Sabathia, Pettitte, Hughes? They can match 2/3. Hughes again just doesn't have the proven track record yet. 1 good year a great pitcher does not make. Hudson, Hanson, Lowe? Really? Which of these guys exactly is considered in the same tier?
No. Nobody this year has the 1-2-3 punch that the Phillies have. Reputation and experience are a big part of that and certainly some rotations can be there in future years.

Burnett has a fantastic history...of inconsistency. Moreso even than Hamels. personally I'd take hamels over Burnett any day.
I think Hamels will pitch at the level he is currently at now for a while which is excellent news for the Phillies.
I think burnett will likely pitch better next year than he is this yearbut not enough to put money on it. He can be great or he can be what we've gotten this season.

Mario Mendoza had a reputation and experience too. didn't make him good.

I like the Gose----->Wallace move for the 'Stros. Obviously, it'll get little ink, if any but I definitely see where the 'Stros are leaning in their post-Berkman days. Good move.

Roy is going to be missed. This Astros franchise is going down the toilet. He was one win away from having the most Wins by an Astro. My daughter's first MLB game was Roy's first start with the Astro's. He beat Darren Dreifort 2-1. Billy Wagner with the save. I think that's the only game she's ever been to. Oh well. Good luck with the Phillies.

Numbers 4-7 would be an awesome staff. I would bring Roy back near the end of his career to let him break the record. At least it would sell a bunch of tickets.

Like Cliff Lee, their acquisition is a short term rental. He could very well go back to the Astros in the end.

Next year (I believe) that there is a mutual option clause.
Perhaps that is for 2012. But Oswalt can opt out of that last year if he wants.

Scott's history was odd. he really didn't become a very good player until he was 30. he was passable, but then something happened.
the year he won the Cy Young his WHIP was something like 0.92. that's amazing.

I think one year Scott pitched the pennant winning game. A no-hitter. He had a couple years there where he was unstoppable. He was waiting to pitch the last game, when the Phillies beat the Astros in 16 innings. He would have won that game. Still he'd be 3rd or 4th in my rotation with Ryan, Richard, and Wilson.

Scott had a great 1989 as well. I'd put him ahead of Wilson (and probably Ryan if you only count the Astros years). But I'm focusing on the peak.
And *cough* it was the Mets, not the Phillies. Game 6 of the 1986 ALCS is the greatest baseball game of all time.

Ok, I'll say it. Tough debut for the Phillies Roy #2 last night. 7H 5R 4ER in 6IP.
Eliminating all games I am biased against (Yankees) I'll pick last season play in game between Minnesota and Detroit as an all time great game.

As far as a Big 3, wouldn't Halladay, Lee and Hamels be better than what they've got now? Their record would also have been at least a few games better if they hadn't traded Lee away. Yes, they were over budget, but they've taken on a bunch of money over the next year-plus, at minimum.
And don't forget Beckett, Lester and Buchholz.

I'm sticking with Game 6 of the 1986 NLCS, and #2 was just five years later - Game 7 of the 1991 World Series (the Jack Morris game). Also on my list:
- 2003 ALCS Game 7 (the Aaron Boone game, started by Clemens and Pedro) - 1991 World Series Game 6 (Kirby Pucket catch & HR) - Games 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 of the 2001 World Series - 2005 (I think) NLDS 18 inning game (the Chris Burke game) - 2004 ALCS Games 4 and 5 (Game 7 was lame by comparison) - 2008 All-Star Game (Yankee Stadium, 15 innings)
Sure, there are plenty of others including perfect games, cycles, 10-RBI games, but all of these games happened on the biggest stage and had plenty of amazing moments.

despite today's game not going like i'd like it to, i think that Lee, Wilson, Lewis trio kind of did alright in their first playoff series, didn't they?
in 3 starts and 18.1 IP, they combined for 22 K, a 0.49 ERA, and a 0.87 WHIP.
not too shabby.

Doesn't everyone shut down the Rays? weren't like 3 of the no-hitters (or near no-hitters) vs. the Rays this year?

No - one was BY the Rays, and another was last year. They were not a straggler in runs this year.
Lee/Wilson/Lewis is pretty good, although Lewis is a big dropoff from the first two - he has a pretty long career of mediocrity before a good year in 2010. But it's definitely not a weakness on this team.

#39: Yes, TB was no hit 3 times in 12 months.
Then in August Brandon Morrow threw 8 2/3 of no-hit ball against them as well.

Thats right, Longoria broke that one up with 2 outs in the 9th - the one where Morrow went nuts with 17K's... Almost again
The Rays had been no-hit May 9 by Oakland’s Dallas Braden (who threw a perfect game) and on June 25 by Arizona’s Edwin Jackson, a former Ray who has since been traded to the White Sox.
Evan Longoria's ground ball single off Toronto 2B Aaron Hill's glove with two outs in the 9th kept the Rays from being the first team no-hit three times in a season (in 9-inning games).

Being no-hit for a third time in a span of 81 games would actually have been more of a novelty. The bigger issue is how a team that ranks third in the majors in runs (555, 5 per game) can be so remarkably inconsistent, scoring two or fewer runs in nearly one-quarter of its games, 27 of 111. Or to a different extreme: of the nine games in the AL in which a team had one or no hits, the Rays have been in five of them.

Another little quirk was that the Rays went a span of almost 5 years (18 straight losses) in Cleveland until a win at on July 24th.
