Well, I figured Pujols would be the obvious answer. But not according to this S.I. article.
Agree? Disagree? And really now....the best player since Mickey Mantle???? Hmmmmmmm.... |

R.A. Dickey is the best player in baseball... per elbow.
Derek Jeter is the best player in baseball... since he leads the league in intangibles.
Alex Rodriguez is the best player in baseball... since he is paid the most.
Josh Hamilton is the best player in baseball... since he leads the majors in the only category that matters.
Hideki Matsui is the best player in baseball... since he is the most recent World Series MVP.
Ichiro is the best player in baseball... since he regularly gets the most All-Star votes.
Jamie Moyer is the best player in baseball... at his age.
Ubaldo Jimenez is the best player in baseball... since winning is only thing that matters
Mariano Rivera is the best player in baseball... since he only plies his trade one or two innings at a time.
Joe Mauer is the best player in baseball... because without him, the ball would roll all the way to the backstop
Seriously, why is there any debate when we all know it's Chase Utley.

To me, best player is who do I pick if I was starting a team today. And thats Albert Pujols. Crazy good numbers, consistent and over a long period of time. Josh having one good year every few doesn't cut it for me.

Agreed, although it's not even about starting a team. Albert is simply the best player in baseball. He does everything as well or better than any other player. I was (mostly) kidding about Utley up above, but he's in a similar category. If someone did nothing else but field his position and run the bases like Chase Utley, he'd be valuable.

Seems that article seems to be saying that Hamilton is having the best season, and then puts that season in context. That is different than best player. Pujols, even if slightly worse this year is the best player because of his track record.

as an ex ChiSox fan it pains me to say it...Joe Mauer.
Tremendous leader, tremendous athlete (#1 dual threat QB recruit), clutch hitter (pick a moment), and pretty much does everything great with the patchwork Twins...that and I didn't feel like saying Pujols.
BH - I would've agreed with your logic a couple years ago b/c Utley is a total gamer you'd want on any team, but based on his #'s it looks as if he's in a decline and much like crappy Grady Sizemore, he's living off of his reputation:
.332, .292, .282, .272
Those are his batting averages the past 4 seasons...its quite possible that we have already seen the best Chase has to offer (Hat Tip to Angelo Cataldi and the 610 WIP morning show for that one)...than i re-read and saw you were kidding...lol

Hamilton is not even the best player in the AL this season. That would be Miguel Cabrera.

Great One, I recommend 610 WIP. If you hate Philly fans, you'll love this station.

97.5 the fanatic and 610 wip
Ones espn radio in the morning. The other is local Philly sports.
Afternoons you gotta listen to 610 for Ike Reese and Eskin.
