Subject: RIBC 2010: Retrospective

Congrats to HOLT, winner of the 2010 RIBC.Final standings appear in the table below. Please use this thread for several purposes - RIBC managers may post a recap of their season, if they wish. What worked well, what went wrong, what would you do differently the next time, and what did you learn?
- I'd appreciate it if someone from each of the qualifying leagues would post the final standings of their league. This will make it easier for me to locate when I go about deciding on qualifications for next season. (If your team names do not easily identify the related team manager, please provide those linkages as well.)
- If there were any managers in any league who failed to live up to standards in behavior or activity level, I'd like to know about it. Bad behavior is never tolerated. Failing to follow through for the season can also be grounds for declining an invite to the RIBC or a AAA league, depending on circumstances. If you feel uncomfortable about "ratting out" any other manager in this thread, you may also send me a confidential email.
Thanks to everyone for a great season.RIBC FINAL Standings through games of Oct 3 |

I'd like to apologize for my absence this season. I've slowly been caring less and less about fantasy sports for the past few seasons, while still maintaining hope that one day it would come back to me; but it came to a screeching halt this year. This will most likely be my last season in the Guru leagues.
The majority of my players started the season very slowly, and then I moved to Japan, which made it nearly impossible to see the games/highlights. I eventually lost interest, stopped following the waiver wire, and fell into a deep last-place hole. Apologies for not living up to my end in an otherwise great league.
Congrats to Holt for dominating once again.

RIBC is the fantasy league that I look forward to the most each year, so winning this league again is something I take great pride in. I know that climbing Mt. Everest is more difficult, but the feeling must be about the same! It doesn't matter that there is no money on the line. The competition is top notch, and the format is perfect. Kudos to Dave Hall for making this whole thing happen year in and year out.
I felt a lot of pressure throughout most of the season to get all the right moves done and get the best lineup set every day. Trading for Halladay and Oswalt was absolutely crucial. There is no way I win this season without Halladay.
MBT and Slackjaw - you both had your periods of dominance this season - times when it looked like you'd be hard to catch. Thanks for making this a memorable season. Loki - you scratched and clawed your way through the whole season to a well-deserved third-place finish. Filthy Rich, you made almost as many moves as Loki did. You and Uptown Bombers finished just a stone's throw out of 2nd place. Looking foward to playing with all of you guys again next season.
As always, Thanks Dave for everything you do. There is no place on the net like RotoGuru.com. I'd hate to imagine what fantasy sports would be like without this forum.

I'm so disappointed with a 13th place finish. Given my team was a patchwork of waiver wire and fa pickups. By the end of April I didn't have a single drafted OF going and was in last place. You'd think climbing to 13th would be good. Nope. I climbed as high as 3rd and was rocking 100+ points as late as August. But my team just stopped producing and nothing I did seemed to stop the bleeding. I wonder if an active manager ever had such a sharp drop off w/out being burdened with injuries so late in the season.
Congratz to s R for taking the title. Despite the points there was a period near the end where things were very close for the top 3. And for 4-9 there was a lot of movement every day. It was very competitive.

I was 45 points out of first place with 6 weeks to go, and got all the way back to within a point of 1st place. I am pretty sure that would have been the greatest comeback ever.
Mainly because I was about 150 IP behind everyone else. And traded all my power for SB's (where I was trailing) at the trade deadline. Pedroia finally being declared out for the year allowed me to take that spot and really rotate the hell out of a couple bench spots to make up IP and Games Played.

They say that it's not the first 6 picks that make a fantasy champion ... but the last 6 picks.
That's not always true ... when your first 6 picks include ... Round 2 - Jimmy Rollins (88 games played) Round 3 - Grady Sizemore (33 games played) Round 4 - Chone Figgins (161 games, 158 of them sucky) Round 5 - Brian Roberts (59 games played) Round 6 - Francisco Rodriguez (Ends season on DQ list, after slugging his girlfriend's father)
Thanks Guru for another fun season. I'll be back in 2012!

GO [9] - I'm heading back to the long bus rides in AAA for 2011. We'll be back into the bigs in 2012!
SZ [8] - Brian Roberts has bitten me on the arse in other seasons as well. He's close to getting added to my "poop list".

1. Thanks a million to Guru for running this league. I haven't looked around but this has to be one of the best leagues out there.
2. Congrats to Holt for winning. Grueling season, knew I shouldn't have traded with you, but I was too blinded by my shortstop hole at the time. Reyes is now forever banished, and I will never again trade Halladay. And even worse, I dumped Bumgarner before he started doing well. Anyways, I don't even need to see our draft to predict Holt to win it again next year.
3. High fives to everyone else who qualified for next year as well. And thumbs up for those who played out the season, regardless of league or standing.

As for my team, 4th place in RIBC. Very proud to have done so well, but it is bittersweet since first was in reach until the final week or two. It's easy to point out a bad trade or two that cost me, but there were also just as many, or more moves made that helped me get 4th place. Hard to say I want to be less aggressive next season, because it all starts with the draft. I would obviously love to be less aggressive next season, but it would be nice to have a good draft for once, and have the ability to be selectively aggressive rather than having to swing from my heels.
Draft: Halladay- 1, good, packaged for Reyes(bad); Greinke- 2, average; Santana- 3, average, traded for Dunn (good); McCann- 4, good, packaged for Tulo (bad); MYoung- 5, average; HBell- 6, great, traded for ?; Aardsma- 7, good; CGonzalez- 8, good, packaged for Tulo (bad); NJohnson- 9, horrible; Prado- 10, good, traded for ?; Cuddyer- 11, average, traded for ?; Scutaro- 12, average, packaged for Tulo; Callaspo- 13, averaged, traded for ?; Snider- 14, bad; Hudson- 15, average; Cameron- 16, bad; Lindstrom- 17, good, traded for ?; SRodriguez- 18, bad; League- 19, bad; Chapman- 20, bad; Rzepczynski- 21, bad; JBaker- 22, bad; Bailey- 23, bad; Francisco- 24, bad; Thome- 25, bad;
Some of the ones that I call bad, had good seasons, but bad starts, so basically, they had good seasons for other managers.
Trading for Dunn was huge, my team was too pitching heavy at the time. Also nabbed Jose Bautista early, that turned out amazingly. Tulo got hurt the day I traded for him. He still did quite well, but I ended up still needing a shortstop and ended up going big for Reyes, who also was hurt and a huge fail. Another trade landed me Ichiro, and Logan Morrison was a huge acquisition for a while. I had a huge stretch, mostly fueled by Coco Crisp, where I was getting 4-5 steals every day. Went up about 10 spots in a month, it was unbelievable. Lack of speed and shortstop depth was my weakness in the draft, and I addressed both but it was too late and too costly in both cases.
Ready to rock again in 2011 whenever the time comes. 2010 was as exciting as it gets, and I feel strongly like I know what I did wrong in my draft last year, and even though I went with a crazy pitching heavy strategy, I still don't think that was the biggest flaw.
