Previous Season's Thread
Welcome to the 9th season of our league! We are working to get everyone and everything set up in ESPN. There will have to be some rule changes based on moving sites. I expect to be a few things to come up along the way as well. We will roll with it, do what we need to do and have fun!
As you are invited, please take a few mins to familiarize yourself with the site. I am unsure as of yet if we are replacing anyone. I'm also unsure how we are going to handle players/trading/keepers/deadlines etc. Please bear with us. |

Your Co-Champ's recap:
General: This is the #1 league I play in. Even though I just won $450 in my "money league" for placing 2nd, I would easily prefer 1st in this G20 league over my money league any day of the week. The efforts I put in since coming into the league before the 2005 season have been much more rewarding. The pride I feel having clawed my way from the 2004 $hithole where my best keepers were Armando Benitez and Magglio Ordonez......and your prospects were Philip Humber and Royce Ring (instead of Baldwin choosing David Wright), to build a contender and back-to-back winner is very satisfying.
Keepers: No real disasterous keeper choices. Sure, Kelly Johnson disappointed and didn't come close to matching his breakout season, and Alexei Ramirez regressed a bit, but Carlos Beltran was the only fish I let go that would have been keeper-worthy.
Draft: With my 7 hitter, 2 pitcher (including a closer) keeper strategy, I planned on focusing on starting pitching early on, and closers if I had the chance. Well the closers didn't come through, but I hit grand slams on the 4 pitchers I picked in my first 5 picks:
1.20 Ian Kennedy 2.04 Ricky Romero (although I admit wanting Matusz! lol) 3.04 James Shields 3.20 Alexi Ogando
Of course, as bh pointed out, Ogando was a closer reach (after hen snatched Walden, who I would have taken, with the pick before me) that turned into a 1st half bonanza.
I hit at 7.20 with Josh Willingham, who had a career year, but that was it! Thankfully the strength of my keepers and the sheer overwhelming magnitude of those top picks gave me a great base in which to be competitive this year.
Trades: I feel I made mostly fruitful, competent trades. I am aggressive and willing to pay the price to add the pieces I need to do. While I don't ignore future value, I am willing to "let it go" if I have to in order to get the piece I need to win. I've told blue hen a dozen times that I have always felt he has to sometimes realize that to get that key piece, sometimes you just have to pay.
I burned a few picks last year in making trades to win, compared to blue hen who had 6 picks in the first 3 rounds, including 3 in the first 22 picks.....so I knew I'd have to be aggressive.
- In March before the draft, I traded 2 prospect picks and a 2012 2nd for R9's 2nd, 3rd and 9th picks. Those prospect picks are a lot of value, but I felt I HAD to make a big move. Those two picks turned into Ricky Romero and James Shields. Home run. - Needing steals, in May I traded prospect Casey Kelly (SP - SD) and Matt Moore (yes, THAT Matt Moore) for Rajai Davis. Obviously I needed steals. I got some from Davis before he got hurt. - At the end of May I traded R9 my last prospect pick and a 3rd rounder for Valverde. At that point I had already had Sergio Santos taking over the CHW closer spot, and Valverde was perfect (literally in save opps) the rest of the way and a HUGE reason I won. - On June 6th I made a huge move in trading Kennedy, Romero, Ogando and a 9th to Guru for Sabathia, Harang and a 14th. There was a point in time that I really regretted it, but in the end I still got 20 points in K's, ERA and WHIP and was 5th in wins, so it worked out for both. I got my top-10 starter in Sabathia (who went on a huge roll after that trade) and diversified my keeper assets. - In July A-Rod underwent surgery and would be out quite a while. I traded an 8th for a 10th with R9 to get Ryan Roberts. At the time, (for some stupid reason) Roberts was battling Sean Burroughs for playing time, so I got Roberts pretty cheap. He certainly was worth quite a bit more than a "replacement" player....considering how little I got from A-Rod in the 2nd half of the year, Roberts was a lifesaver. - On August 1st I seized an opportunity to help my OBP/HR/RBI (which had been slipping with no ARod) and traded NYY prospect Manny Banuelos and a 7th for Berkman and GL's 10th. While Berkman didn't go off, he was more than rock-solid in those categories and a nice little shot in the arm.
Daily management: I should have lost this league based upon poor daily roster management. A change of jobs mid-season did not help my attention (excuses, excuses) at gametime, and nobody knows how many stats I left on the bench when the tools to make these adjustments are sitting there on the website waiting for me to use them. I've learned my lesson.......a daily alarm during baseball season around 4:00pm Pacific to check for rainouts and days off in 2012!
I'll have a lot of work and wheeling and dealing to do in order to come close to doing it again. I have the keepers for sure, and some assets to trade in Valverde, Santos and possibly James Shields. It will be a fun offseason.

Same format.
Keepers
Hard to complain. The only keepers who didn't meet or beat expectations were Jon Sanchez, who had a good k rate before he got hurt, and Shin Soo Choo, who got hurt but brought Beckett in return. Sure, I should have kept Shields over Sanchez but I'm sure each of you would have done the same.
Draft
I had a ton of early picks and despite using the first two on Rodney and Barton, my draft was decent. Neil Walker brought me Daniel Hudson and I lucked into Jordan Walden. Happ and Carrasco may have killed my pitching rates, so that wasn't great.
Trades
As mentioned, Choo for Beckett, Walker for Hudson, and Shelby Miller for Putz gave my pitching a shot in the arm. Looked at several other deals for pitching, and I guess I should have taken at least one, but really thought I could win with what I had. I disagree with Species- I felt it was important to hold onto my core and I'm very glad I did.
Day-to-day
I am one of the strongest day-to-day managers out there, as evidenced by my TSN record. Looking at my Active Stats, I did quite well this year, and it was my biggest advantage over Species. My happiest moment was in September- Species had caught me in runs, so I picked up a bunch of players on a sparse day, and they got me seven runs. Also happy I picked up Ross Detwiler last Monday- six innings and no runs.
Overall, I have to be happy about 2011 but I'm more than eager for 2012 to start.

Sergio Santos has been freed of schizophrenic Ozzie Guillen's revolving closer circus, being traded to Toronto (who got rid of wannabe closers Francisco and Rauch) where he is the undisputed MAN. Both he and Jose Valverde are available to closer-needy teams.

Yeah. My gamble of keeping Bard has blown up in my face. That said, I didn't have much else of value to actually keep, going into last year. At this point neither Bard or Adams are keeper worthy just because their teams don't seem to want them to be closer. The trade of Adams at the trade deadline last year was probably a bigger shock to me.

As the only Mariner fan here, I think it's a good trade for the Ms. And a good trade for the Yankees.
Mariners have pitching, and no hitting (including the minors). Prince Fielder likely won't come to Seattle, and all the other notable hitting free agents are gone this year. And now, the Mariners can sign Oswalt or Edwin Jackson to replace Pineda, while waiting for Hultzen and Paxton to come up. And maybe they'll sign some hitting in 2013, and finally have a competitive team again.
Pineda was fun to watch last season, but only has two pitches (fastball & slider), and no changeup. He missed most of 2009 with an elbow injury, and I personally thought 171 innings last season was too heavy a workload.
And since we still have Felix, there are about 25 reasons to go to Safeco this year (17 Felix starts and 8 bobblehead nights).

I agree with Tosh completely and am confused by R9's comment. I don't think there's a scout-type that doesn't think Montero is a legitimate big-time stick. While you can debate the value of someone with so little defensive value, looking at the Mariners they have NOBODY on the team and nobody in the minors with Montero's bat/power grades (with the POSSIBLE exception of Justin Smoak if he returns to his minor league glory). Yet, as Tosh notes, they still have Felix and some pretty decent pitchers coming up. No, I don't think Hultzen or Paxton grade out as high as Pineda, but you have to give up something to get something.
From the Yankees perspective, it is HARD to see a stick like Montero go, but they needed thet pitching so much more.......and the DH spot necessary for ARod and Jeter in upcoming years, it's a reasonable risk.
Even if Pineda's a solid #2 for years......it's going to sting to watch Montero rake for 10 years.

I see Pineda as a prospect who is now established, while Montero is a prospect who still has to prove his worth. There are tons of examples of flameouts of the latter. Far less so of the former.
Mostly though, rebuilding teams can make win-now teams pay more if they want to. The Mariners could've and should've received more back imo.

Smoak is actually a good comp for Montero. Sometimes it just doesn't translate. Of course, sometimes it does. We just don't know.
We just don't know about Pineda either but looking at young guys traded this year - Gio, Cahill, etc - you'd think Pineda would have commanded more.

Victor Martinez -- torn ACL -- possibly missing a majority of the season :(
I guess that's karma after the Braun suspension? Fantasy Gods' way of evening the G20 playing field??
A team might want to consider a speculative investment in Victor......for a reduced cost now, he would have greater value later when he comes back this season. You could spin him to a contender down the stretch, or to a team leading into the 2013 season. Inquire within.

It's turning February. Pitchers and catchers are reporting in a few weeks, and Team Species has been planting a few seeds here and there about G20 Baseball trades.
I have a variety of assets available for keeper upgrades, picks, prospects, anything:
Prospect picks: I have all 3 prospect picks available. They can be considered for picks in the draft, or perhaps better for players after the draft.
I am most likely keeping Felix, CC, Rivera, AGonz, ARod (mainly because he'd have so little value to anyone else) and BJ Upton. I have tons of other guys who are all legitimate keepers depending upon the makeup of your team:
Mark Teixeira: I'm certainly not looking to trade him per se, but with AGonz on board he is a position duplication. While his stubbornness in hitting into the shift Yankees blog has harmed his BA and OBP, he's a shoo-in for 100 runs and 100 RBI with 35 homers. He's only 31.
Kelly Johnson: Struggled in AZ, but reborn in Toronto where he hit .270 with a .364 OBP. He still had very strong counting stats in 2011 w/21 homers and 16 steals.
Ryan Roberts: Eligible at 2b and 3b, Roberts clubbed 19 HR and stole 18 bases with a respectable .349 OBP.
Josh Willingham: Exiled to pitcher-friendly Oakland in 2011, he signed a deal with Minnesota to be a key cog in the middle of their order. Willingham clubbed 29 homers and drove in 98 for a pathetic A's team, and is primed for another solid year for the Twins.
Sergio Santos: Don't read anything into the signing of Francisco Cordero. Santos is the closer they traded for, a move that has been universally lauded by a variety of ESPN-types (Law, Bowden, Karabell) as a deft trade to acquire a low-mileage reliever who is under team control for years. Santos struck out 92 men in 63 innings and saved 30 games last year.
Jose Valverde: Big Papa Grande was a perfect 49 for 49 in saves with a 2.24 ERA last year. The Tigers are primed for a 95-win season so Valverde should get plenty of saves.
James Shields: Shields is EASILY a top-20 pitcher in this league and is a legit keeper for anyone playing in front of one of the best defenses in the league. 2.82 ERA, 225 strikeouts, 16 wins and a 1.04 WHIP. Those were top-5 numbers last year and he's only just turned 30.
Ted Lilly: Constantly undervalued, shook off a slow start to post a 3.97 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. He's pitching in a top pitchers park in the best division for pitchers in baseball.
Inquire within!!

For some inexplicable reason I left out:
Alexei Ramirez: While flawed in OBP, otherwise Ramirez is a consistent producer in counting stats: 15-18 home runs, 70-75 RBI, 75-80 runs and (usually) 13-14 steals. All of this while averaging a steady and reliable 149 games played over his career. Not much upside generally, but he's very consistent. Easily a top 12 SS in this league.
