The State of DailyBaseballData.com

DailyBaseballData.com (DBD) was founded in June 2009 as a joint venture of Alex Zelvin and Dave Hall. Our intent was to develop a site that catered to the data and information needs of serious participants in daily baseball contests. In general, Alex was responsible for the marketing and narrative content at the site, while Dave developed the programming tools and reports.

Starting today, Alex has join FanDuel in a new full-time position. One consequence is that he is relinquishing his partnership role in DBD. So going forward, DBD is now wholly owned, operated, and produced by Dave as a wholly owned and operated affiliate of RotoGuru.net.

What does this mean?

First, I’d like to thanks Alex for his significant contributions over the first two years of the site. In reality, Alex was the instigator of DBD, and he recruited me as his partner to be the web programmer. Some of the programming tools here were conceived by Alex (notably the Weather Dashboard and Bullpen Usage Report), and his assistance and counsel in visualizing the “art of the possible” and critiquing the status quo were instrumental in developing the site’s relevance. His immense success as a daily contest player brought DBD immediate credibility, and his contacts and marketing acumen really helped to jumpstart our customer base and affiliate-driven revenues. His contributions will be missed – and I wish him well in his new job.

Frankly, I have not completely decided how to manage the site in the coming months. I’ll need to have a greater personal presence in producing narrative content – although if there are others who would like to help contribute “blurb” material, please let me know. I do expect to expand statistical coverage beyond just the FanDuel platform. I’ve been very pleased with the affiliate relationship with FanDuel and that will certainly continue – but daily contest sites seem to be the current growth area within the fantasy sports arena, and I want to develop affiliate relationships with some of the other contest sites as well. I don’t want to tip my hand yet, but some developmental work is already underway. Stay tuned in coming weeks.

I also want to consider ways to better consolidate and/or integrate the DBD and RotoGuru sites. Today, each has a somewhat distinct constituency, a decidedly different history, and a unique footprint in the fantasy sports landscape. Yet many of the informational resources are similar, and many of the tools could be better coordinated. I have not yet figured out how to best go about this, and I do not plan any substantive shifts in the content at either site in the near term. I would like to encourage a greater presence of daily contest players at this RotoGuru Baseball Forum, where discussion can help me to better visualize how to better serve the needs of the fantasy baseball community. RotoGuru has always tried to develop analytical tools that provide and organize information in useful formats that are not usually available from other sites. That has also been the objective at DBD. The underlying data is not original, but it is (re)organized in ways that make it more convenient, accessible, and (hopefully) actionable.

So, if you have suggestions - general or specific - please post them here. I look forward to hearing and digesting your ideas.

I only do rotoball but I do find use for the relief pitcher usage page and the batter vs pitcher page. The box score page is also handy. Weather page is useful. Overall a good site to bookmark.

I use this site everyday... and I've always got ideas if you ever want any or want someone to do some testing. I'm just not computer savvy.

Something I know I've been missing is something similar to RSF's old probable pitchers chart. And I know I'm not alone. Not sure if something like that was ever considered for development.
