Subject: RIBC 2011: Recap and Retrospective

Congrats to Uptown Bombers, winner of the 2011 RIBC.
Final standings appear in the table below.
Please use this thread for several purposes- RIBC managers may post a recap of their season, if they wish. What worked well, what went wrong, what would you do differently the next time, and what did you learn?
- I'd appreciate it if someone from each of the qualifying leagues would post the final standings of their league. This will make it easier for me to locate when I go about deciding on qualifications for next season. (If your team names do not easily identify the related team manager, please provide those linkages as well.)
- If there were any managers in any league who failed to live up to standards in behavior or activity level, I'd like to know about it. Bad behavior is never tolerated. Failing to follow through for the season can also be grounds for declining an invite to the RIBC or a AAA league, depending on circumstances. If you feel uncomfortable about publicly "ratting out" any other manager in this thread, you may also send me a confidential email.
Thanks to everyone for a great season.

WOW! I had not realized that Uptown punted saves, that is flat out amazing. To win in a 16 team league with a 1 in a category, unheard of.
Congrats to kdl212's Smith & 9th going from winning AA to a strong third place in the bigs. Giving Guru some confirmation that the AA winner belongs up at the top.

Congrats to Uptown in more ways than one. He's the lone requalifier from last year to remain at this level. The other 5 from last year's requalifiers are all headed back to AAA.
I think that speaks volumes as to the level of competition that this format attracts.

For the last couple of seasons, the AAA leagues (particularly Judy's league) have outscored the RIBC league. There is alot of really good talent in the lower levels.

Bleh. My team was like the Red Sox or Braves. Was fighting for first for probably close to three months. Then hung around in 3rd or 4th another couple months. Then had some kind of meltdown and watched everyone pass me the past month. It was some combination of poor management and slumping players. I pushed and pushed to move back from third to first but the deals backfired on me and dropped me to AAA. Maybe I should have just accepted third place gracefully. Tried to build my saves and steals, dealt away a lot of talent, and still didn't budge an inch in those two categories.
Congrats to Uptown. In a 16 team league with deep rosters, maybe punting saves is the way to go. That, and drafting a Granderson in the 9th rd. Sheesh. I can tell you one thing not to do. Don't trade Kershaw for Hanley Ramirez just days before H-Ram hits the DL and is lost for the season.
The competition level in this league was the best I've seen so far. So many times this season I got stuck with horrible middle and corner infielders that i had no choice but to start. The free agents were just scraped so hard all year.
Was fun! Thanks to Guru for another well-run league.

Thanks to all for the congrats and to all the managers in the league for a really great season. Up until the last few days I truly thought Guru was going to catch me. It was not a good feeling seeing him narrow the margin daily.
I'm sure I'll have more to say later about punting saves but for now I'm just thrilled that it worked. One thing I found funny in reading my draft rationales: on my Granderson pick, I mentioned that I would have taken Delmon Young over him had he not been snatched up just before my turn. Would be interesting to see how much would have been different with just that one change.

Yeah don't be fooled by the misleadimg final point differential between first and second. Guru spent much of the latter half of the season within 5 points or less of the lead.
With Guru finishing second, the top 7 stay put. Many days the 6, 7, 8, and 9 slots changed hands.

If Holt was the Braves/Red Sox (though he wasn't really), my team was the Rays/Cardinals. On Sept. 2nd, I was in 9th place, sitting at 87 points. An awesome charge, thanks almost exclusively to fantastic starting and relief pitching performances (I gained 21 points in the standings in the pitching categories from Sept 2nd-28th), was as shocking as it was steady.
Great league. Glad to be able to play again.

First, congratulations to all those moving on or staying in RIBC for next year. The league was highly competive as always, and for me the race for the 7th spot was exceptionally so. At 70 points and with two months left in the season I realized that I needed to change strategies. Looking at the standings I felt that my best chance was to work heavily on pitching ratios and Ks. I traded Miguel Cabrera for Halliday and Ichiro for C.J. Wilson. Then I traded my two closers for Jay Bruce and Derek Jeter. Jeter had a terrific August and September and Bruce played reasonably well so my hitting did not take too much of a hit and I did not need Ichiro's SBs. The standings were such that I only lost one point in saves. I also actively pitched match-ups and looked for the hot hitters. The end result was that I gained 17.5 points but ran out of time to make it to 7th. Thanks for a great league and good luck to all in the RIFC leagues.

Thoughts on my season
Hitters: Carlos Gonzalez: my first rounder (pick#7). Although his performance was uneven, over the course of the full season his per-game performance sill warranted this pick. The problem was that he missed 34 games.
Jose Bautista: I took him mid-2nd round. Home run! Eventually traded him late in the season for Ryan Howard and Ryan Roberts, but he put up stats worthy of a top-5 pick.
Jason Heyward: selected in round 3. A bust, and my biggest mistake in the draft.
Rickie Weeks (round 4): Worth it until he got injured in August. Shortly before the injury, I had the chance to trade him for a closer. Should have pulled that trigger, as it turned out.
Paul Konerko (round 6): Another great pick – probably ended up being worthy of a 3rd round pick.
Geovany Soto (round 9): Nothing special, but I did let him occupy the catcher slot all season. Probably should have waited later for a catcher.
Michael Bourn (round 11): A real steal! Worth have been a worthy second rounder.
Mike Cuddyer (round 12): Uneven, but good value, especially given his positional versatility.
J.J. Hardy (round 13): Faltered a bit in the last month or so, but still put in a very solid performance. Excellent value for round 13.
Josh Willingham (round 17): Magnificent value. Performance justified a late single-digit round. Finished especially strong.
Ryan Howard and Ryan Roberts: picked up via trade in August for the stretch. Howard delivered as advertised (except for resting a bit too much after the Phillies clinched). Roberts was pretty much a bust after I got him. I don’t think the trade hurt me too much, but it didn’t really help, either.
Emilio Bonafacio: A free agent pickup at a time when I needed an infielder. Wow – was that a stroke of genius luck! He really boosted me up the rankings in steals. Never left my starting lineup from the day I got him.
Pitching: Brian Wilson (round 5): OK for a closer, but missed too much time due to injury. Can’t complain about 6 wins and 36 saves, however.
Andrew Bailey(round 8): Good value when active, but too much time on the DL. 0 wins, 20 saves.
Was always interested in another closer, but never quick enough on free agent opportunities, and the trades offered to me seemed too steep.
Starters: Cain (round 7), Hudson (10), Ian Kennedy (14!), and Beach (23) were all solid. Bartolo Colon was an early F/A pickup, and did great until he was injured. After his return, he ran out of gas, and didn’t win a game in the final two months. I should have dropped him for the second half.
All told, my ability to get solid pitching later in the draft was again the key to success, especially since I only wasted one of my early hitting picks (Heyward).
Although I was able to stay close to Uptown for most of the second half (and tied as late as Sept 12), it seemed as though the only way to catch him was to have him falter – and he stayed pretty solid. Meanwhile, in the final few weeks, my hitting slumped, and I also fell back a few spots in strikeouts as other teams scrambled to fill their IP quotas.

Great league guys, hats off to Uptown for the win. It was incredible what a battle it was to not be 8th or 9th down the stretch. I am really happy to finish were I did considering I drafted Posey and Josh Johnson in the 3rd and 4th rounds. Looking back at my draft, only 4 guys I drafted made it to the end of the year on my team. A couple of trades I made really benefited me. Especially get Cliff Lee at the trading deadline he was lights out for me and got me a couple of points. Best pick of the draft me was Berkman (268).
