Subject: 2012 closer list

Been a while since I put together a closer list. But as stated in the past, its a bit of a unique position and a cause for many headaches. So to make it easier, here is a list of closers by team (or prospective closers):
Arizona Diamondbacks: JJ Putz Atlanta Braves: Craig Kimbrel (venters in the wings?) Baltimore Orioles: Kevin Gregg Boston Red Sox: Andrew Bailey Chicago Cubs: Carlos Marmol Chicago White Sox: Matt Thornton (Jesse Crain?) Cincinnati Reds: Ryan Madson Cleveland Indians: Chris Perez Colorado Rockies: Rafael Betancourt (Matt Belisle, Matt Lindstrom) Detroit Tigers: Jose Valverde (Joaquin Benoit) Houston Astros: Brandon Lyon KC Royals: Joakim Soria LA Angels: Jordan Walden LA Dodgers: Javy Guerra (Kenley Jansen, Hong-chih Kuo, Mike MacDougal) Miami Marlins: Heath Bell Milwaukee Brewers: John Axford (Frankie Rodriguez) Minnesota Twins: Matt Capps (Glen Perkins, Joel Zumaya) New York Mets: Frank Francisco New York Yankees: Mariano Rivera Oakland Athletics: Grant Balfour (Brian Fuentes) Philadelphia Phillies: Jonathan Papelbon Pittsburgh Pirates: Joel Hanrahan San Diego Padres: Huston Street San Fransisco Giants: Brian Wilson Seattle Mariners: Brandon League (George Sherrill) St Louis Cardinals: Jason Motte (Fernando Salas, Mitchell Boggs) Tampa Bay Rays: Kyle Farnsworth Texas Rangers: Joe Nathan (feliz/ogando?) Toronto Blue Jays: Sergio Santos (Francisco Cordero) Washington Nationals: Drew Storen
I only put Venters up because of the potential to vulture some saves or in case of a stumble this year from Kimbrel. Venters will be right there in the consideration
Chicago White Sox: Until I see Thornton embedded in the closer role I don't know that I'll believe it. Past few years the job 'has been his' going into the season. He has 15 saves since 2009.
In Houston there is Brandon Lyon. His job should be safe by virtue of 'who else is there?' But he has a shaky closer history
Rockies: None of them stand out as great closer material. Betancourt is listed at the top of the depth charts now, but I think this is one that will be a spring training decision. Dont' forget Lindstrom is in that bullpen.
Detroit Tigers: How long can Valverde pretend he's a closer and not get caught? Valverde has a sub 3.00 ERA every other year in his career. Last year it was 2.24. Last time he had era's that low he bounced back with a 5.84 and 4.25 era.
Javy Guerra is trotting back out in 2012. His 2011 season was a solid foundation to build on as a closer. But lets see more than 32 appearances.
Brewers are pretty solid with Axford but if he stumbles or gets injured K-Rod is there.
Can't believe any team is actually listing Matt Capps at the top of their depth chart. I expect a change in that listing at some point this year. Hopefully before spring training is out.
So far this list is based on depth charts from a handful of sites. Unlike in years past all sites I used this year are actually presenting the same closers at the top of the charts for every team. If anybody finds something different than whats listed here, please post. Obviously we compete against each other a lot, but this can be a great resource to help gurupies make great shows outside of our own leagues.

I think Jim Johnson is considered the closer in Baltimore right now over Gregg.

Punk? Any sources on this? Every depth chart I looked at had Gregg as the closer. Worth keeping an eye on thru spring training though.

I know he took over for it and did a fairly good job at the end of the season, but mainly i've just heard it on Local Radio out here compared to reading anything about it.

To start the preseason:
Wilson -- traded, then TJ Madson -- TJ Farnsworth -- TJ? or just end of career?
SAVES so far = 0
SHeesh.

Heh, I have Walden and Myers and felt pretty good about myself. Still do, actually, but still only have two saves.

Out of all 4 of my teams I drafted/kept/acquired Soria, Farnsworth, Bell, Street (twice), Marmol, Nathan, Balfour, Santiago, and Santos.
Out of those 9, 2 are still standing.

I drafted the following over 4 teams:
My office league: 3/4 down Andrew Bailey Carlos Marmol Kyle Farnesworth Brett Myers
Dirty Dozen 1/2 down Heath Bell JJ Putz
RIBC AA 2/3 down Carlos Marmol Frank Francisco Brad Lidge
RIBC AAA 1/2 down and 1 on his way out Andrew Bailey Javy Guerra Rafael Soriano (had to drop for position players due to too many on the dl)
7/11, but out of those, jj putz and frank francisco have era's around 6 and Javy Guerra is just a place holder for Jansen. After my drafts I never in a million years would have guessed Brett Myers would the best closer across all my teams.

And Javy Guerra goes down officially with Kenley Janssen replacing him. It was going to happen at some point this season.

I'm not doing so bad. I drafted:
Soria/Nathan/Valverde/JJohnson 3/4 plus I got Broxton and Dolis
Walden/Myers 1/2 plus I got Downs, Cashner, and Sale
Valverde/Street 1/2 plus I got Cashner
Kimbrel/Papelbon/Santos 2/3 plus I got Dolis

I've never been a fan of saves in fantasy - my preference would be for a single Saves+Holds category. That would make all relief pitchers relevant for their ERA/WHIP/Ks/W as well an additional weird counting stat that somewhat reflects the ability to maintain a lead. It would put more of the focus on drafting good pitchers--more or less equalizing the value of, for example, Hernandez/Putz, or Benoit/Valverde, or Kimbrel/Venters, or Adams/Nathan--and minimize the carousel chase for saves (or better said, it would minimize the rostering of crap pitchers in the chase for possible future saves and the rewarding of those who monitor rotoworld regularly and jump when injuries/demotions happen).
I know that no site offers this category, but in the search for the perfect fantasy league, that's my vote.

Holds are no fun. I've been in leagues with them and it's just not interesting.
it would minimize... the rewarding of those who monitor rotoworld regularly and jump when injuries/demotions happen
Seriously? You want to stop rewarding managers who actually follow baseball and care about updating their teams? Really?

Ha ha. My explanation says I'd prefer a system that rewarded those who follow baseball and identify good pitchers (whether they accumulate saves or not), and you say I want to stop rewarding managers who actually follow baseball. Clever.
I follow baseball. I care about updating my team. To me, looking up any number of closer charts available on the internet and rostering Tom Wilhelmson b/c Brandon League might get traded this summer, or Cory Wade b/c after Mo and Robertson and Soriano all go down with injury, you might be holding the Yankees closer, or winning the race to Dale Thayer/Casey Janssen - all that rewards luck and constant internet access.
I understand that paying attention, and planning for and reacting quickly to injuries is part of the game, and should be rewarded. But my view is specific to the category of saves - b/c of the scarce number of saves (the fewest total of any counting category) and the arbitrary nature of the stat, using it introduces a distortion that I'd rather wasn't present. That's all I was saying.
Also, I agree holds are boring.

"Seriously?" and "Really?" should be banned from internet boards. It's tired derision which attempts to end discussion.

How about saves+holds but with holds only worth .5?
I kinda like it.
BTW I'm really liking Ernesto Frieri in the closer-in-waiting category. He feels sooo close.

I think next year I'm going to do something different for the annual closers chart. I'm thinking of simply throwing darts and whatever name it lands on gets the nod on the initial list.

Lol...what a year!
Frieri tries to make me look good by getting his first save of the year a couple hours after I posted #25!
Alas not as good as it looks on the surface. The not-as-bad-as-you-remembered Scott Downs was put in in a tied game in the ninth inning today and Frieri got the save in the eleventh inning.
You guys all know about this tool? Link's on this here website of Dave Hall.

Amazing how many closers have gone down this year. I made the decision in one league to just get one closer and have been lucky he wasn't hit with the injury bug.

Is Frieri the closer in Anaheim yet? He looks like he has had the last few chances, but some sources still have Downs in there.

@Beebop, after watching the game today, looks like Scioscia is doing the committee thing, just one more of his poor moves this year, imho...
He is playing the matchups and Cargo was due up in the ninth so he brought Frieri in in the eighth with Downs ready for the ninth or sooner if Cargo made it up in the 8th...

Clippard 3-for-3 in Save Ops for the Nationals in Boston. He's definitely the go-to guy for them now. Rodriguez was just too wild.
Storen is likely to be out at least another month.
