0 Subject: RIBC 2012: Getting started

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Thu, Feb 23, 2012, 15:49

I have sent out 16 invitations for the 2012 RotoGuru Invitational Baseball Challenge. Fifteen of the invitees have responded with a commitment to play. I am still awaiting a response from one manager.

As background, the RIBC invitations went to the top 6 in last year’s RIBC (excluding me), plus the top three teams in each of the two AAA leagues, plus the winner of each of two AA leagues, plus me. That makes 15 teams. Of the two 4th place finishers in the AAA leagues, I selected the one who finished closest to third place to fill the final spot. If the open invitation is not accepted, then the 4th place team from the other AAA league is the first alternate.

Here are the 16 managers in the 2012 RIBC:
Uptown Bombers
kdl212 (pending acceptance)
mjd
Graydog
Kokeshis
JKaye
Nerfherders
Dror
Tosh

jseth333
twilson
RotoGuru Jr
Ksoze
reeb
Guru

If kdl212 declines (or fails to respond), I will extend an offer to mailedfoot.

A separate thread will be set up shortly to begin the process of filling Qualifying Leagues.

The first regular season MLB game is on March 28, although there are just two games (in Japan) before April 4. Last year, the draft lasted about 12 days, so I expect to start the draft around March 15. Draftime.com will again be used to host the draft.

Since the first season of the RIBC, Yahoo has been the hosting system. However, some qualifying leagues have used ESPN in the past several years, and ESPN does offer a better alternative for same-day activation of added players. So I am open to a switch. We’ll decide this by vote. Stay tuned.

Any changes this year?

Any support to move to ESPN? I know several of us have played it in the past.

I'm a Yahoo guy, but I do like the same day feature on ESPN.

I think the one thing I didn't like about ESPN was that live scoring only showed cumulative total scoring changes, but not in each specific stat category. Am I correct here, or mistaken?

I tend to prefer Yahoo just because I am used to it. ESPN has some nice features and their rankings are a little more in depth. Really, I could go either way. I guess for me is when I think of RIBC, I think in blue on white. :)

I'd like to put the issue of ESPN vs Yahoo to a vote.

Aside from the issue of relative familiarity, I believe the biggest difference in capabilities relates to same-day add/drop activation.

At ESPN, you can pick up a player and activate him at once, as long as his game has not started. If a player is already locked for the day, he can still be added or dropped - but the add/drop is not effective until the next day. (ESPN vets, does that sound accurate?)

Question - can a player on your bench still be dropped for a same-day pickup if the dropped player's game has already started?

For Yahoo, we have always used next-day activation for add/drop transactions. Yahoo does offer same day transactions, but if a player on your roster is already locked, you cannot actually drop him until the following day. The same goes for player adds. This means that if you are used to making roster moves in the evening, you might be unable to transact. For this reason, we have not opted for same day activation.

I am assuming that if we went with Yahoo, we would continue with next-day activation. If we use ESPN, we will use same day activation.

Please indicate your preference - ESPN or Yahoo. (RIBC managers only)

So - what say ye? Please indicate if you prefer one or the other.

Non league member, but done ESPN... but from my experience you can add/drop ESPN same day until the first game starts. Then all subsequent add/drops (regardless of game time) are effective next day.

I believe GO is correct. Post 36 in the RIBC AAA ESPN thread explains it also.

Anyone have an answer to my previous uncertainty?

I think the one thing I didn't like about ESPN was that live scoring only showed cumulative total scoring changes, but not in each individual stat category. Am I correct here, or mistaken?

I looked at the rules for both and they appear identical to me. No adds/drops are allowed for any players that have started a game that day.

re: reeb - ESPN - you can drop or add at any time, its just a matter of when they add/drop to your roster. If its before the first game starts? its same day. After the first game starts it switches to next day.

mjd [4] - If you use the "pop-out" Fantasycast page, you get more daily results than is found on the Standings page.

Uptown [15] - Yes. These is an iphone app. It is slightly more useful than the Yahoo one IMO.

My Vote - Yahoo, with next-day activation. But will be happy with ESPN too.

Am I missing something?

FREE AGENCY AND CLAIM STATUS Any undrafted player is available to add to your team immediately if he is listed as "FA" (Free Agent). Players listed in claim status are locked. This happens during games or the waiver claim period is in effect. So when are unclaimed players locked? Each day, players may NOT be added or dropped on a team's roster or traded, from the beginning of their first game of the day time until the start of the next scoring period.

Starting every day, the waiver period within your league (if you have one) will then begin and all players are available to be moved, claimed etc.

Can you give me an example for the ESPN drop/add?

ie.,
drop pitcher Y

pick up pitcher X whose game begins at 1:00

at 1:07 I drop pitcher X and re-pick up pitcher Y whom I can plug in the next day.

is that correct?

Judy 23 and reeb 19:

If the first game of the day is at 7:05, on ESPN you can pick up a player at 7:04 and start him. On Yahoo, you would have to pick him up before 3 AM on game day to start him that day.

I find that this part of Yahoo appeals to two types of managers: the less-competitive manager who doesn't care when the change happens, and night owls who want to make their moves at 3 AM each day.

Unless you're in a super deep league and want to pick up a bench player who you see is in the lineup 30 mins before gametime because the regular is getting a day off, I don't see how this ability is an advantage.

Yahoo - same day
The reason you will see the error message "A player has already played and is no longer editable for today. (Error #174)" is that your league is set to allow "Daily - Today" roster changes.

With this setting in place, all adds and drops must be made prior to a player's scheduled participation in a game.

Any attempt to add or drop a player that is in an active roster spot after their game has started will be met with that error.

Once a player's game starts, you are not able to waive them if they are in a starting roster position until 12:01 AM PT the next morning. Bench players can be waived, but if a player gets injured during a game and you want to waive them you will have to wait until the next day if you had them active.
This has made the Yahoo-today option a non-starter, since not all managers are able to routinely transact before games have started. By using next day, any player can be added or dropped at any time - the effective date is just deferred until the next day.

From the ESPN league setup page:
If a daily lineup lock is selected, roster moves, which include adds, drops, trades, and moves to and from the DL, will lock at the first game of the day. Roster moves made after the lock time will be reflected on the next day's rosters.
I'm sure this is consistent with how ESPN has actually handled same-day leagues in recent years.

Reason I prefer next day adds:

I think it takes more skill to be able to guesstimate whether a manager will be starting that bench player the next day based on match up or any other factors. simply waiting until you see him in the lineup only favors people who are able to check their leagues just prior to when the majority of games are starting.

Re 30: I don't think this makes me a less competitive manager, I think anyone in this league is competitive. However, I do agree that it can favor the 3 am bomber.

I take offense at this phrase: "the less-competitive manager who doesn't care when the change happens". [30]

Less-competitive? Some of us are not glued to the computer 24/7; we have other real life things to do.

All of us are competitive or we would not be in RIBC leagues. However, we honor our other lives and obligations.

Re 36, although that may be a slight advantage for westcoasters, i think the majority of people are asleep by midnight most of the time. the far greater advantages is had by eastcoasters who are awake the next day before westcoasters. this allows then to make the first moves in the morning.

If there's a must have free agent out there, he'll be long gone by the time anyone in the east wakes up to go to work.

MJD I would have to disagree with that, the majority of the days news has already broken by the time I am able to check at 7am pacific time. I think I am in the majority on this one in terms of when people are awake. If you leave at 7 to go to work on the east that is 4am pacific, how am I hearing about news at that time.

It really makes no difference in the long run, I am sure there are advantages and disadvantages to both time zones. For the majority of this year I'll be in Cairo, Egypt so my time zone is 7 hours ahead of eastern, so I will definitely be making moves at unusual hours.

Personally I dont think Ive ever missed not being able to do a same day pickup. Usually I am not making a FA move just for one game. It is a more thoughtful process and I'm doing it to replace a player for days or weeks. In that respect, it doesn't matter what time of the day it is.
42Great One
      ID: 340592712

I find a deep league same day pickups is very valuable so you don't fall behind significantly in games played, and even more important in RIBC cause its deep AND there is short bench... and when you are making moves a day in advance, you really are just guessing what might happen the next day. Especially with a position like catchers rest, you are really at the mercy of the whims of the managers.

Why not have all available information until the last minute to decide what I want to do that night? Its like making a wager on a game each night and I have to lock in my bet 16 hours in advance? Think I'd like to see the news a bit closer to gametime to make a more informed decision.

And yes, in addition to true same day add/drops ESPN has a better interface as twilson said. Its much more user friendly. Far superior player sorting and searching. Only those that haven't tried it would be prejudice to it. My only negative with ESPN is I don't love their Player Rating System. As an obsessed trader, I think it makes determining player value a bit trickier than yahoo.

Usually the only argument Yahoo devotees have is... "well all my other leagues are on Yahoo and I'd like them in one place" which I understand. But there is also something to be said for using the best product available for such a top notch league.

I'm not in this league, so not a big deal to me. But when I win the ESPN AAA league this season, I'd like to know I'm climbing the ladder up to the best available option going forward.

What are each sites eligibility rules?
I checked Yahoo and they have 5 games started or 10 games played at a position to gain eligibility.

How many games started does espn require to gain eligibility? If I remember correctly it used to be 10 but that was a few years ago. There are a number of players this year that the difference between 5 and 10 games means some players are eligible in yahoo for a position and not in espn.

this are the ESPN eligibility rules:
Batters:
- Games played at a position during last season: 20
- Games played at a position during current season: 10 (The eligibility will take place on the 11th day, even if no game is played that day)

Pitchers:
- Pitching appearances last season: 5 starts / 8 relief
- Pitching appearances during current season: 3 starts / 5 relief

So it looks like Yahoo is going to prevail again, unless we have any vote switches. I'm going to wrap this up by the beginning of next week, at which time we can move on to choosing our draft sequence.

With no other opinions coming forth since Friday, we'll go ahead with Yahoo.

I'll register at Yahoo and Draftime, and send out an email with the necessary instructions.

We can also get started with the draft selection process. Rather than asking for random numbers, I'll generate them online and send audit copies to several league members. Expect that to happen later this afternoon.

Random numbers were generated as follows:
Set 1: 9 4 5 13 12 10 8 15 3 14 11 6 7 16 1 2
Set 2: 6 15 8 12 9 16 3 13 11 10 5 4 14 1 7 2

The list of the managers in the opening post was arranged in alphabetical order.
The first set of numbers was aligned with that list, and the list was resorted in numeric order.
The next set of numbers was aligned with the sorted names, and then sorted in Set2 order. Here is the resulting order for the draft selection round:
