Subject: Etiquette Question

I'm playing in a FB league for the first time in a few years and oddly enough I don't recall this coming up before.
If a player you're set to receive in a pending trade gets injured, is it acceptable to cancel the trade at that point?
This would have come up if a recent trade offer I made for Brandon Beachy had been accepted.
In my case it's a public Yahoo roto league but it's not 12 strangers. 4 friends and I joined it together and I believe all or most of the other 7 members are acquainted with one another.
Wanted to see what this forum thinks before posting the question there. |

Personally I don't see the problem with asking to cancel it. Its not official until it processes. Its also now not the same trade you made.
As a commissioner I would not step in and cancel it myself unless the parties involved requested it, but I wouldn't think twice if they did ask.
At the same time, you guys made the decision based on all available information up to that point. One of you made the offer and the other accepted it. Injuries are part of the risk of every player. So while I don't see the problem in asking to cancel it I wouldn't push the subject or make a big deal out of it.
Now, I had a trade request pending in 1 league to receive beachy. As soon as I saw he was hurt I cancelled it. If the other guy had accepted the trade after the injury that would be a different story. But if you guys made the deal in good faith ask but don't push.

Probably not a bad idea for a league to agree before the season starts that pending trades can be cancelled in such a situation if the manager receiving the injured player makes the request.
In real baseball the players involved have to pass a physical don't they? Without some kind of agreement ahead of time it's just up to the people involved wanting to do the right thing.

I had Tulo pending in a trade my way the time he broke his wrist. Didn't get a redo, but it was RIBC, so maybe different circumstances.

I always feel if you make a deal its done with and that guy is on your team. If he gets hurt while its still pending, tough luck - you acquired him.

What GO said.
That said, if both teams mutually agree to rescind, if I was Commish I wouldn't object.

I believe the option to cancel a pending trade in Yahoo Fantasy Baseball is a feature that wasn't there when I last played in maybe 2008.
Seems like a very questionable feature to me. Does anyone know if the commish was able to choose this when he set up the league?

Under Commish Tools you can edit any team's rosters at any time.
However, I'm of the belief that any trade stands unless the league vetoes it. Yahoo even warns you that once you hit the accept trade button you can't change your mind.
I guess if the league agreed to a situation like this at the beginning of the year it could be done, but I've never been in a league that even considered such a rule.

I don't think I've seen that warning in my league. If it's there, it's a lie. In my league once a trade has been accepted, there will be a notice at the top of your roster that a trade is pending. If you click the "details" link, you see the players involved and have the option to vote against it.
If yours is one of the teams involved in the trade, the 'vote against trade' button is replaced with a "cancel trade" button.
My question was whether the option to cancel a trade was an available feature selected by the commish when he set up the league.

This is from rules->Yahoo! Trade Review
Description
This article describes the benefits and process of implimenting Yahoo! Trade Review.
Resolution
In a Custom League, the League Commissioner can set the review period to be anywhere between one and seven days. Note: Your League Commissioner may also have selected "League Votes" or "Commissioner Control" as your league's trade review option. If either setting is selected, the Yahoo! league office is not involved in the review process. If, however, the trade is deemed clearly to have an unfair impact on the league's competitive balance, it will be vetoed. It is not the purpose of the League Office to prevent coaches from making unwise trades, but rather to simply ensure that all coaches in a league are competing on a level and fair playing field. All decisions on trade protests are final. Explanations about why specific trades were approved or rejected are not provided.

I don't think the cancel option has anything to do with the trade review feature. Our league is set to "League Votes" anyway.
I've searched through the rules and everything I can find about cancelling trades says that it can't be done once a deal is accepted.
But when I clicked on the details of a pending trade I made this week, there was very clearly an option for me to cancel it until it was no longer pending.
I dind't test it of course because it was a trade that I wanted.

I bet I never even looked. I've had opportunity for buyers remotse, but not until after the trade was long processed.

I agree with GO:
"I always feel if you make a deal its done with and that guy is on your team. If he gets hurt while its still pending, tough luck - you acquired him."
Trade is done the "pending" process is just a formality.
