Its about that time. The annual pre-season closer list compilation. As always this is not 'my work' but a compilation of multiple sites including Yahoo, espn and draft help (thanks for posting that in the 2012 thread astade) plus any other resources I hobble together. The initial list to help people prepare draft sheets and figure out keepers as we head into spring training. Further refinements are encouraged thru discussion. Yes, this is all information readily available, but its nice to have at all in 1 place and see what some of the different sites say bout different battles.
For gits and shiggles just to compare, here is the 2012 closer list.
Arizona Diamondbacks: JJ Putz Atlanta Braves: Craig Kimbrel Baltimore Orioles: Jim Johnson Boston Red Sox: Joel Hanrahan (watch andrew bailey) Chicago Cubs: Kyuji Fujikawa/Carlos Marmol)* Chicago White Sox: Addison Reed Cincinnati Reds: Jonathan Broxton Cleveland Indians: Chris Perez Colorado Rockies: Rafael Betancourt Detroit Tigers: Phil Coke/Bruce Rondon/Joaquin Benoit* Houston Astros: Jose Veras* Kansas City Royals: Greg Holland Los Angeles Angels: Ryan Madsen* Los Angeles Dodgers: Brandon Leauge/Kenley Jansen Miami Marlins: Steve Cishek (don't trust him though) Milwaukee Brewers: John Axford (can he be trusted still) Minnesota Twins: Glen Perkins New York Mets: Frank Francisco (1 site has parnell) New York Yankees: Mariano Rivera (keep Dave Robertson close) Oakland Atheltics: Grant Balfour Philadelphia Phillies: Jonathan Papelbon Pittsburgh Pirates: Jason Grilli San Diego Padres: Huston Street San Fran Giants: Sergio Romo Seattle Mariners: Tom Wilhelmson St Louis Cardinals: Jason Motte Tampa Bay Rays: Fernando Rodney (fluke last year? keep a close eye on Peralta) Texas Rangers: Joe Nathan Toronto Blue Jays: Cassey Jansen (boggs) Washington Nationals: Rafael Soriano (Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard)
* Cubs - Marmol was warm and cold last year losing the job and regaining it multiple times. Some sites list him as closer still, others list Fujikawa as #1. Marmol is 1 or 2 on all lists. Fujikawa is 1 on some lists and under even shawn camp on another. Detroit - 2 sites list Rondon as #1, 1 lists Coke as #1, All of them list Benoit as #2. Rondon seems to be the favorite for now Houston Astros - Veras seems to be the favorite on most lists, but after that its all over the board. LA Angels: Madsen should be it, but coming off an injury Frieri could see some work. LA Dodgers: Toss up here as Jansen was always thought of as the closer of the future for LA and took over from Javy Guerra last season. But then they sign Brandon league. Will have to watch spring training for this one.
There's still some interesting possibilities and great potential for injuries. All in all, I think this closer list is one of the least settled ones in the past few years. There's a lot of question marks due to injuries last year. |

I may have to drop Yahoo from my sources for next year. Quite frankly, if I note a discrepancy above between the sites its always with Yahoo. I caught a few instances during the season last year where info they were giving was just so far off it couldn't be described even as bad.

Here's a quote I found from Dombrowski about the closer situation in Detroit:
"We're not anointing him the closer, but we're hopeful he'll take the job in spring training," GM Dave Dombrowski told USA Today on Thursday. "He's got a quality, quality arm, his breaking stuff is much improved, he has that mentality, that golden arm."

From Yahoo:
• The Athletics are one of those teams that like to recycle and flip the closer as often as possible, and the wheel is already spinning for 2013. Grant Balfour, the expected ninth-inning sheriff, had a knee scope Thursday and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Ryan Cook and Sean Doolittle are the next names in line; Cook has the advantage of previous closing experience in the majors (if that even matters), while Doolittle has Pixies Karma on his side. Forced to take one of these guys right now, I'd lean towards Cook

Mets have shut down Frank Francisco due to elbow inflamation following offseason elbow surgery. The job appears to be Bobby Parnell's to lose.

From Yahoo: In his first appearance with the Blue Jays since last April, Santos looked as healthy as could be, showcasing a fastball clocked at 95 miles per hour. Although the Blue Jays have named Casey Janssen as their closer heading into the season, Janssen is dealing with minor shoulder pain and it's not clear how soon he may begin pitching. Santos possesses the better repertoire of the two pitchers and probably profiles better as a closer for his prolific strikeout rate, so it wouldn't be shocking if he quickly unseats Janssen for the ninth-inning role.

Over in Cincinnati we have this quote from Chapman along with Baker's endorsement for chapman as closer:
After his start vs the Giants Saturday, Aroldis Chapman gave his most direct answer yet about his job preference between starting and closing:
“I would like to be the closer,” Chapman said via translator Tomas Vera. “But it’s out of my hands.”

In Detroit, it looks like closer by committee. But Rondon won't be a part of it, at least to start. Coke/Benoit/Dotel are all going to be getting a chance to close some games. A bit of a mess.

Rotowire has Al Alburquerque in the mix as well. I bet someone takes the job by mid April.

Fujikawa takes over as Cubs closer. Marmol out. For now, at least. Fujikawa has some trust to earn as well...

In another report:
Sat, Apr 6
Cubs manager Dale Sveum said there will be a discussion about other closer options after Carlos Marmol blew his first save of the season on Saturday.
Advice: It wasn't just Saturday's blown save against the Braves that caused Sveum to make those comments. Marmol has allowed runs in all three of his appearances this season. Sveum indicated the team might look to Shawn Camp or James Russell in save situations in the future. Kyuji Fujikawa has struggled too much to be given a shot.

Jose Veras out in Houston as he was traded to Detroit. No change in Detroit as Joaquin Benoit is expected to remain the closer.
Initial indication is that Wesley Wright will get a shot to close for Houston, but nothing confirmed yet.
