- [330592710] Wed, Feb 20, 2013, 11:02

I have sent out 16 invitations for the 2013 RotoGuru Invitational Baseball Challenge. All 16 have responded with a commitment to play.

As background, the RIBC invitations went to the top 6 in last year’s RIBC (including two teams tied for 6th), plus the top three teams in each of the two AAA leagues, plus the winner of each of two AA leagues, plus me.

Here are the 16 managers in the 2012 RIBC:
Tilt23
Uptown Bombers
Jkaye
kdl212
Tosh
Rotoguru Jr.
Kokeshis
Blue Hen

Evan
JeffG

Qualifying league sign-ups are first being solicited via email to all other managers from 2012. For details, see the RIBC 2013: early notice thread.

The first regular season MLB game is on March 31. Last year, the draft lasted about 12 days, so I expect to start the draft around March 15. Draftime.com will again be used to host the draft.

Since the first season of the RIBC in 2004, Yahoo has been the hosting system. However, some qualifying leagues have used ESPN in the past several years, and ESPN does offer a better alternative for same-day activation of added players. So I am open to a switch. As our first order of business, please indicate your preference for a hosting site for 2013: Yahoo or ESPN. (Only the 16 RIBC managers listed above may vote.)

Slight lean towards Yahoo only because my other (office) league uses it

I prefer Yahoo same reason as JeffG. Not a big problem either way though.

I think its interesting that one of the primary reasons folks are devoted to Yahoo is cause of ease of using one site.
Thats the uphill battle BH must constantly face every day despite the fact that his ESPN product is superior for MLB and NBA. I still prefer Yahoo NFL however.

I haven't done fantasy baseball on espn, but it doesn't matter.
Just asking here, could we start the draft earlier than the 15th, maybe the 13th I am out of town the 21-23. I will of course still have access, but I would rather get more of the draft done. Just asking.

I see it is coming down to the last two voters. Blue Hen has appealed to me to reconsider. My preference for Yahoo was slight, I'm good either way and ESPN is a very good platform for fantasy sports, and considering his affiliation with ESPN I am switching. (Nothing like alienating half my leaguemates before we start)

Not having to log into an extra site is also a big reason why I prefer Yahoo. And I don't see what ESPN offers that Yahoo doesn't or why it's superior product. I wouldn't mind some more detailed discussion.

The voting is as close as it's ever been.

Of those who played at ESPN last year, all continued to choose ESPN. Of course, that's also where they chose to play last year.

Of those who played at Yahoo last year, three chose ESPN. Then again, those three played in the RIBC last year, where they had no choice. They may very well have preferred to play at ESPN last year.

I've played at both sites for multiple years. I do find the interface at ESPN to be modestly better from a speed standpoint, as it's easier to manage lineups over an upcoming period without needed to completely reload the roster page for each date.

I think the biggest advantage of ESPN is its ability to allow you to add a player and insert him in the same day's lineup, assuming it is done before the first game of the day. Yahoo has a similar capability, although there are limitations that make it effectively a non-starter, so we always use next-day transactions at Yahoo.

I'm inclined to make the move to ESPN this season, but will wait one more day before making the call, in case anyone else wants to weigh in with strong feelings in either direction.

There is a Yahoo app that does all you need it to.

The ESPN'ers have the votes, 8-7, with strong indications that Guru's vote would make it 9-7 so let's just go that direction. It gives us Yahoo'ers our first excuse for poor performance. ;-)

It looks like everyone has now signed up at both ESPN and Draftime. Thanks!

We now have to begin the process of selection our draft position. I will generate a random order of team managers, using a set of numbers 1-16 generated at random.org. I'll send audit copies of the run to several team managers as well.

Here is the alphabetical list of managers that I will use for the randomization:

Here is the plan for the draft.

I will activate the draft on Thursday morning (March 14). The draft will "officially" start on March 15, but you may start making untimed selections on March 14, as well as set queues and generally reacquaint yourself with the software.

Can we access the draft and set queues yet? Checked it now and it doesn't let me in the draft yet.
