0 Subject: Keeper vs. Draft pick?

I commish a league that has been together for 13 years, we just decided to go Keeper this year. We are starting with 3 keeepers. There are a couple teams that wanted to start with only 2 and gradually increase, but league outvoted them and we are at 3. Looking at their rosters, I see why they pushed for 2.

So, I was thinking if they wanted to keep only 2, they could trade for draft picks. Is that normal practice, or am I way off base and shouldn't. I know it is my league and my rules, just looking for opinions as I am new to the keeper world.

Thanks, Dave

Teams with only 2 viable keepers? Hard to fathom. How large is this league?

When you drafted last year did managers know that you were changing to a keeper format this year?

I've belonged to football keeper leagues that could keep less than x number of players, but all my baseball keeper leagues have a required number of keepers. Larger player pool in baseball.

One way to do a keeper league is that you lose the draft pick of the round when the player you are keeping was drafted.

So, keeping Miguel Cabrera probably loses you a 1st rounder, but keeping Mike Trout probably only loses you a 15th or later round pick.

So each year it becomes a tradeoff as to when you drafted said player. And keeping a player you kept the year before automatically loses you your highest pick, to prevent you from getting to keep Mike Trout for an 18th round pick for the next 15 years. It then becomes a tradeoff of 'do I lose my 1st round pick to keep Mike Trout in 2014, or do I keep that breakout kid I drafted in round 20 instead'.

And obviously, people can keep anywhere from 0 to 3 (or whatever amount you want to let them keep).

The advantage to this model is that balance can be achieved alot quicker then in a straight keeper model.
A horrific draft year can get reset completely, while a dominant group of keepers won't dominate the league for years on end. A 2013 team with Cabrera, Trout and say, Stephen Strasburg wont be set to dominate for the next 5 years... they'll lose their top 3 picks next year if they want to keep the same guys, whereas a team who drafts Bundy (20th), Taveras (21st) and Myers (22nd) this year might be poised to have 3 awesome keepers in 2014 for NO top picks...

The DISADVANTAGE is that the rewards for being right and drafting gems and developing from the group up is reduced. In G20, we keep 9 with no limits on years kept or draft pick rounds affected, so the handicap of sucking/benefit of succeeding is much more pronounced. We're a very competitive league, and we don't scoff at a 3-year rebuilding plan, but a less competitive league can suffer abandonment issues if a couple teams end up with 50% of the best players year in and year out.

My keeper league on Yahoo has draft pick trades throughout the season. It is an option you can pick as commissioner. I think it works well and can help teams settle on trades.

I am currently in a keeper football league that used to be non-keeper. Fortunately we agreed to the number of keepers before we decided to go that route, so it was a fresh serpentine draft and nobody could complain that got ripped off, cause we had just two keepers. I dont know if we thought about it, or it just happened that way.

If you have dissention within the ranks because some teams have better keepers than others, wait til next year to go keeper. Put all the cards on the table put it to a vote then press on. Presumably you are all friends, so its not worth the hard feelings if its not even handed. Your league might collapse as a result, and even worse, you may lose long time friends over a game.

Changing to a keeper league after the fact does cause some problems and it does not seem fair to me.

An option could be for teams that does not have 3 keepers, is they get an extra pick in the 3rd rd or maybe the 4th rd.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I didn't clarify well. It was decided early on last year, mid-April, and everybody was and is fully happy with going keeper when we did.
We have discussed it in years past and since there is very little league talk offseason, it was arranged when it was.

It hasn't really been brought up as to the number of keepers this year, but as a fair commish, imho, I just wondered if I should offer it. Nobody has asked for it. As far as the teams with only 2 keeper options, after looking at their rosters closer, they do have viable options for very worthy keepers, they just chose different than I would have. And it is only 2 teams that voted for 2 keepers out of 12 teams.

You should probably save yourself the headache. If everything was established last year I think you're on pretty solid ground standing pat with the original plan. Ten votes out of 12 is a pretty strong majority. And nobody's complaining...? Done and done.

Plus, we're only talking about 36 keepers, right? Surely those two teams can put together three guys... and if one of their three is somewhat sub par, there will be plenty of great players available in the draft.

Just my $0.02.

That's the lure of keeper leagues. Some teams may be ready to go for it now, while others may need a year or two to build towards that.

I enjoy the challenge and the majority of my leagues are now keepers.

Good luck to you guys.
