0 Subject: Gurupie 20 2013 Regular Season Discussion

Posted by: Species
- [23202714] Wed, Mar 27, 2013, 15:00

Welcome to the start of another Gurupie 20 season! The preseason trades are all in, the Prospect and Supplemental Drafts are complete, all undrafted players - as of this writing - are on waivers, and we are ready to roll.

----------------------
Managers may call up prospects who are on their prospect lists. You are supposed to announce a callup in our thread, including who you are cutting, and a Commissioner is supposed to do the transaction for you. NOTE: this is separate from the "call up and renounce" prospects we did prior to the Prospect Draft (i.e. Wil Myers). I am speaking of players who retained prospect list eligibility and were not part of team's 9 keepers. Guys like Manny Machado, Kyuji Fujikawa, Jedd Gyorko, etc.

Obviously this is not a requirement. They can remain on the prospect list without being called up to the main roster. Reminder: a player gets two callups and send-downs and can retain prospect status.

An example: Manny Machado has one callup/send down on his record. Tosh used him last year, and sent him down prior to keepers this year (which is part of one event of calling him up and sending him down). Say Tosh calls him up for a second time and he blows out his knee prior to exceeding prospect limits. He can be sent down one more time and retain eligibility on the prospect list through the next Prospect Draft.
-------------------
I corrected the waiver order to reflect the opposite of last year's standings.
---------------------
We have some rule proposals that - in my opinion - in the heat of all of the preseason activity did not get sufficient review and discussion. Please see below.

Thanks to all of you for your diligence to date. Our drafts went off with relatively few hitches. What hitches that did occur were mainly my errors!

Good luck to you all this season.

As we get to the end the season, let's take a minute to thank Species (and other commishes) for the hard work all season. And I personally want commemorate the two-year anniversary of the most exciting fantasy finish I have ever seen, shared with Species.

Good luck to everyone gunning for the top this weekend!

Thanks guys. What a fun and ultra competitive season. I didn't feel comfortable until only recently. I think a few different people were in first throughout the year. Ref put a scare into me 2 days ago when it was 162-159.5 and BH put a scare into me a few days back when it was 165-163. BMD, I definitely owe you drinks for Crush... I was just looking for some power out of him and Rosario and figured even with their terrible OBPs, 3 out of 5 categories aint bad. Darkside, I thought I overpaid for the longest time as well. Lots of I could haves... I could have kept Hosmer but then I wouldn't have gotten Andrus and probably wouldn't have 19 in SB. I could have kept Freeman but then I couldn't get Cargo who got me Minor and Taijuan to help my pitching. I could have kept Beltre but then I couldn't get Lester who got me Liriano and Parker who also helped my pitching. I could have kept Cashner... but I thought I preferred to keep Hellickson of all people... etc, etc.

Looking forward to the strategizing, wheeling and dealing, trash talking, and camaraderie of next year, as well as trying to defend my crown!

Grades

Keepers
Braun: B. Good, not great when he played, and missed half the season. Definite keeper next year.
Kemp: C+. Plus because I got value when I traded him. Not much else.
Bautista: B. Great when he played and likely to be kept next year, but getting older.
Andrus: B+. Shouldn't have traded him to the best team in the league.
Price: A+. As good as any pitcher in baseball.
Rizzo: B-. Still growing. Have high hopes for the future but a great 2013 would probably have won this thing.
Sale: A. Great progression from a great pitcher.
Stanton: A-. Terrible year, but got the pieces back in trade that should set me up well for 2014.
Halladay: F. I'd have been better off not having a 9th keeper.

Picks
Perkins: B+. Had exactly the solid year I expected, and is now an elite closer.
Grilli: A-. Best closer in baseball for most of the year. Good trade bait.
Hanson: F. Had a couple good starts, but nowhere near worthy of a first rounder.
Reynolds: C+. I still believe Reynolds can recapture the magic, although he had some bad months in 2013.
McCarthy: D. Points for getting better after I dropped him. That's about it.
Milone: C. Flashed brilliance at times, but could have been better.
E. Cabrera: A. Amazing for the first half, then traded for the exact parts I needed.
Alburquerque: F. I was right - somebody in Detroit's bullpen was going to dominate.
Dominguez: B-. Good value so late, but most of his homers happened elsewhere.
Grandal: D. This one just didn't pan out.
Jaso: C+. Until he got injured, was a decent late pick.
Straily: B-. For a while, looked like the gem of the draft. Future still bright.
D. Norris: C. Didn't do much for me.
Corbin: A. Keeper in the last round? I'll take it.

Prospect Picks
Rondon: C. Didn't get that closer job, but was good value in trade.
C. Capps: B-. Still might be a closer in March, so there's value here.
Dahl: B-. Traded at just the right time.
Rosenthal: A. Last pick in the prospect draft turned out ok.

Trades
5/19 Andrus for Gregorius and Hosmer: C. Not a D or F because Hosmer and Gregorius were part of the Fielder trade.
6/2: Stanton, Hosmer, Gregorius, Hanson, Scheppers, Rondon, Dahl for Fielder, Choo, Scherzer, Lincecum, Bailey: B. Can't get an A since short-term deal didn't win a pennant. But did get some good value here, especially Scherzer, who took off after the trade.
6/14 Porcello for pick: A. Happy to get value for a non-keeper.
7/9 Kemp for picks: A-. Got a lot of value, but lost a superstar. Extra credit for his lack of 2013 production.
8/6 Rivera for Dominguez: A-. Rivera did blow his first few save chances, but was great in the end.
8/11 Everth for ARod, Reddick, Benoit: B+. Benoit was just hitting his groove and ended quite well. ARod was great for the month also.
8/22: Reddick for pick: A. Got what I could for a player about to hit the DL.
8/22: Carter and Hunter for picks: A-. Carter was great for me, but Hunter gave almost nothing.
8/23: Bonifacio and pick for Alcides: B. He was bonifide for me down the stretch, but I might have been better just playing Gyorko.

Overall: B+. You always want to win, but when your team is beset with injuries, ineffectiveness, and suspensions, it's difficult. Well positioned for 2014.

Review of the Year:

1. Thanx to all the guyz at the top for an exciting pennant race. I remember a day in early September when the top two shifted 8 points in one day. Fun to watch.

2. I'm happy about this year, despite being out of the money, because the beginning looked so bleak. In the first week of April, I became sick, and didn't recover till mid-May. Basically I had enuf health and will to struggle to the computer and do my lineups -- most days-- and that was that. The illness isn't brought up as an excuse for poor performance -- a rotation depending heavily on Edwin Jackson, Gallardo and Estrada, and hitting lineup depending on young "stars" Starlin Castro and Brett Lawrie, wasn't going anywhere fast. On May 20th or so, I recovered. In mid-May I had made 2 or 3 transactions, which you will know, is not my style. What surprised me was how much I had forgotten over that month-and-a-half. I couldn't remember what teams players were on. It seemed to take half an hour to figure out what to do when a player was injured.

Happily I got back into the swing of things. . I was as low as 16th, I believe, at one stage. Once I got better I pushed my way up as high as 8th before finishing 9th. I knew I had no chance at the money, and was only ruining my draft position,. but I convinced myself that I still knew what I was doing, which is more important. Besides, I hate losing, hate finishing crap accidently on purpose. Just a personal preference. In the end my transaction total was 100.

3. I must acknowledge with shame my terrible trade at the beginning of the season, when I handed Gio Gonzalez to GO while extracting much less than I could have for him. (GO: you are not encouraged to tell me how much more). What happened was that I was concentrating more on reconciling my keepers (i.e., getting them down to 9) than on getting value for who I traded. That's the only trade I've ever made in this league that I regret, based on what I knew at the time. (It was a terrible mistake to trade for Bret Boone the winter he decided to go off steroids, but I didn't know about that.)

An excess of keepers won't be a problem next year...but I should be fighting to be in the money.

Oh, and WG: when you're offered your choice of trophies, I suggest the one shaped like a baseball glove. That's what I opted for.

Thanx to all for a good season.

I think a 2nd + 3rd wasn't that far off from my max cause remember at the time he was under investigation for Biogenesis -- so there was a gamble involved in the equation. And he was on the list.

And also factor in that I had my own keepers I was comfortable with and had to kick someone else to the curb which always hinders these pre-keeper deals a bit. But when adding my moving Longoria for Profar (to prospect) that freed up a spot.

Wonder what I could have done this year if I kept Longoria - I didn't expect to be a contender. I could have used some more power.

All,
Great season to all.
Sorry I haven't been around much.
Was a real tough year.
Becoming unemployed and then reemployed with a new company is tough as a few of you know.

Do I need to do anything with Yelich.
Intend to keep him as a prospect and he meets the numbers okay.
If I do need to move him down, could a commissioner do that for me.

Thanks.

1056 states: re: 1055 What we have always done before on the guys not on your team but ineligible to be kept as a prospect is to simply add them to their respective teams and removed them as a prospect.

Good idea. So I have added the following players to their respective team's rosters (and removed them from the prospect list), as they would all be required to be keepers:

Jose Fernandez
Jedd Gyorko
Matt Adams
Adam Eaton
Trevor Rosenthal

To that end, since I couldn't adjust the roster sizes, I made the following drops of players I felt had zero chance of having keeper value:

blue hen: David Lough and Brian Dozier
darkside: Daric Barton
slizz: Mason Williams
bmd: Derek Norris

If fortunes for these players were to change, these teams still hold rights to these players, who were legally on their rosters at the end of the season. to me it's simply more valuable to place the now-former prospects on the rosters instead, as they would all need to be keepers.

Please ask if you have any questions.

Also Carter Capps for me. I supposed Gordon Beckham is the guy to drop, mostly so there's no confusion that I own half the middle relievers in baseball.

That said, Brian Dozier is on the block. At 26, he came into his own this year, hitting 18 homers and stealing 14 bases. He's a good bet for 20-20 next season, which is valuable for a middle infielder. Also, Dozier walked 51 times, which means that if he can bring the average up, he'll help in OBP as well. Given his age, position, and guaranteed playing time, Dozier seems like a good option to fill out your keepers.

Also looking to trade a reliever or six: Perkins, Grilli, Benoit, Melancon, Rosenthal, Capps, or Storen could be yours for a pick. Look at last year's first round to see the value this league places on relievers. Note: if one of the question mark guys gets solidified in the offseason, the price goes up; get in now for the bargains.

So 161 of 162 Seattle Mariner games were on TV this season. I went to 6 games, and saw on TV another 142 on TV, for a total of 148 games.

I really need a new hobby next Summer, because Mariner watching is far from fulfilling.

Wow. Even back in the TBS days I don't think I saw the Braves more than 110 times in a season. And that seemed to be enough. I probably saw them 35-40 times this season between ESPN, MLB, TBS, Fox, WGN, and live. And that also seemed to be enough. Keeps the wife happy. :)

I went to a Braves playoff game in 1998 that didn't sell out.

I may be the anti-Tosh. I watched parts of probably 500 games this year, but only 30 or 40 Phillies games.

In full disclosure, I only lasted a couple of pitches during a few of the late-season Houston-Seattle TV games. Life is too short to waste time watching Houston-Seattle.

I also attended 6 Tacoma Rainers (AAA) games, and one game each for Everett Aquasox, Tri-City Dust Devils, Hillsboro Hops, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, and Eugene Emeralds (All low-A teams in the Northwest League).

Now ... visiting 5 low-A baseball stadiums was a pretty fun hobby this summer.

If anyone ever wants to visit NE PA and go to some minor league games, lemme know. We've got the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Rail Riders (AAA), the Binghamton Mets (AA), and the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (AAA) all close by.

I've also gone to Trenton Thunder games, which is a nice place to watch a game.

I have now downloaded all the stats for the 2012 and 2013 season. if someone is interested in the raw-data (xls or csv) contact me and I'll send it over.

trivia:
1) what is the most common stat line for a hitter while owned in G20 over the last 2 seasons?

I posted something way back in March but I thought It might be wise to speak up again. If there are any openings in this league next season, I would love to be considered.

For those of you who don't know of me, I consider myself a manager who loves to talk trades, makes my lineup every day and has an unhealthy obsession with minor leaguers. Whoever is in charge, please keep me in mind if a spot opens up, thanks.

Meatwads - didn't you win G20 NBA too? Winning a sister league always gets you to the top of the waiting list.

GO - I haven't actually won the G20 Hoops before although I've come devastatingly close. I finished in 2nd place two years ago and 3rd place last year. I think with a little more injury luck down the stretch I could've pulled one out. (At least that's what I tell myself)

For what it's worth, I consider baseball my strongest sport so I would certainly make a good attempt to be competitive. I'm also willing to take over a rebuilding project, although I'd be glad to take over the best team in the league too!

I've had a lot of fun playing the G20 Hoops and I know a lot of the same managers are in this one, so that's why I'm interested. I'm also a big fan of keeper leagues and I'm trying to add as many good ones as I can to my rotation.

Just keep me in mind when baseball season rolls around. If you guys don't have a spot open up, I'll very likely be interested in years to come as well.

Since fantasy football season is officially over, I'm starting to do some prep work for the 2014 prospect draft. One of the big surprises to me was Tanaka was already drafted...in the second round! Talk about a steal by mjd...

Meatwads - as long as you'd be an active participant on the board, you'd have my vote of approval. The activity is what makes this league great and it's truly unique.

I am already anxious to see who will be kept...

As for my squad I am finally in a position to be active this offseason:

Definite Keepers:
2B - Rendon
3B - Arenado
OF - Brown
OF - Arcia
SP - Fernandez
RP - Reed

Could-be Keepers:
1B/OF - Ruf
SS - Villar
SP - Lester
RP - Soria

Keepers in the right situation:
OF - Khris Davis
OF - Jake Marisnick (20/20 type?)
RP - Wilson (if he lands LAD job)
RP - Torres (see above)

Can't hurt to start some discussion!!

Tanaka was a great pick by mjd.....but he had to know it was at least 1 year before he was posted.....and it seems as if it's going to be two. But the nice thing is, you already have a No. 2 starter ready to go on Day 1 when he is finally posted.

I think Darvish was picked at least 1 year before he was posted. Pretty sure it was 2 years....

There are SEVERAL nice names at the top of the Prospect Draft this March. Particularly since I will own a high pick, I am quite excited!! :D

I've already turned down a trade offer this offseason. it's NEVER too early! I have several very interesting names:

- Pineda
- Paxton
- Leake
- Stephenson
- Foltynewitz
- Upton
- D'Arnaud
- Pederson

Also have Chris Carter and Wilson Ramos, with more risk but plenty of upside.
