Here are the summary draft results for all five RIBC leagues, showing the average, minimum (earliest), and maximum (latest) pick sequence (formatted as round.pick) plus the number of times drafted. If a player was not drafted in a league, his average assumes that he was picked at the beginning of round 26 in that league.I hope I assembled this accurately - although every year, it seems as though I botch something up, so I won't be surprised if I have to fix something. Incidentally, since position eligibilities differ between Yahoo and ESPN, some players may be listed at a position that it not available in your league. name | pos | avg | min | max | count |

Just like I thought:
Drafted earliest: Lee Phillips Papelbon Morrow Dom A Sanchez Madson W Myers Span Ruf Norris T snider Duobront
Drafted last: Andrus Buehrle
Did draft without using a SS this time as it did not work at all last few times -- players did not match expectations. Team is rated near bottom by one of managers...
We shall see, team very young, but with potential, except SP is weak depth wise...

I love Judy's method - really tells how much you reach and how lucky you get at the end. First is bad, last is good. * means close in this example.
First on: Bautista, B. Upton, Hosmer, Everth, Maybin, Quentin*, J. Weeks, Wallace, Flowers, Brothers (10 total)
Last on: Weaver, Greinke*, McCarthy, Hamilton (4 total)
My score is -6, and as you can imagine, it's not my best draft. I don't give Judy credit for Buehrle (only drafted twice), giving her a score of -12.
Does any enterprising individual want to figure out how much correlation the score has with actual finish?

Drafting well is not the only thing that is important to winning a league.
Though this data is interesting, I suspect that the teams who capitalize on rising stars, while having no significant injuries during the season, are going to finish better than anyone who looks good using any metric with this raw data. Its prolly the person who has it all working well that stands as the champion at the end of the season.

I bet there's a formula including the metric above, the number of moves made during the season, and the average age of draftees that tells us something.

I had first pick in my league, which means I had 31 picks between my turn to pick. Not sure how that might skew this picture. My score was -3.
Also, I think the last few picks are likely insignificant to this metric, but your last few picks may well be the most significant thing you do during the draft.

Curious for myself (# in parenthesis is the difference between their average draft slot and where I took them): drafted latest: cano (1) wright (6) encarnacion (4) scherzer (18) Balfour (7) Ethier (21) Carpenter (27) estrada (25) Valdespan (12) Parmelee (24)
earliest Revere (50 or so) Pierre (30) Bailey, A (30) Ellis, AJ (49) forsythe (52)
1st thing that strikes me is how many players I got 'latest' though with a guy like Cano a difference of 1 or 2 is hardly worth mentioning. Next is my reaches. When I reached I REALLY reached. That's not difference between the earliest and mine, thats the average spot and mine. Revere is the only one that really concerns me. Pierre was filling a niche and was one of the last who could do it (given the same niche revere fills). AJ ellis was filling a starting roster slot and, imho, was the last of that low tier catcher. Waiting more and jason castro would have been my starting catcher. Bailey is a speculation pick because I don't think Hanrahan gives a full year as closer.
Interesting to see how it all played out compared to other leagues.

I'd be surprised if there's any correlation between getting guys later than ADP and success. In my experience, success comes from getting a couple of those 10-20 guys who everyone drafted in round 7 or later (whether they got them early or late compared to ADP) who have career years or provide Round 1-3 production.
Last year: drafting Mike Trout, whether you went early or late on him compared to ADP, undoubtedly correlated with year-end success. Yadier Molina, Chase Headley and RA Dickey were likely also guys on a lot of successful rosters, whether those owners reached for them or snagged them late/off waivers. For me last year, Adam Dunn and Alex Rios were great picks, and I took Dunn earlier than ADP and Rios right at ADP. What was more important was that their return was greater than their draft position.
2011: drafting Curtis Granderson, whether you went early or late compared to ADP, undoubtedly correlated with success.
Etc. Etc.

Calculating my Blue Hen score: +6
Did not count my first pick, it was the first overall, no way not to be at least tied for first off the board.
I was the first team to take Chris Sale at 5.01, the first to take Coco Crisp at 10.16 and the first to take Homer Bailey at 13.01. I hardly think that taking Sale at 5.01 when his average pick was 5.08 could be construed a reach. Coco, on the other hand, was a whole two rounds before his average pick, so that was far and away my largest stretch. I had seen a bunch of my queue come off the board and I had made the acquisition of Crisp my top priority at the beginning of the draft. I was picking at the turn and probably could have waited until 12.16, but I do not regret the pick at all. Zack Cozart was the only other pick where I took the guy a whole round ahead of his average.
I was the last team to land James Shields at 6.16. I was the last team to land Nick Swisher at 11.01, one and half rounds after his average. Same with Dexter Fowler at 12.16 and Mike Minor at 14.16.
Nick Markakis at 15.01 Ryan Ludwick at 19.01 Drew Storen at 21.01 Justin Smoak at 25.01
all four of those guys I landed last and at least 3 rounds after the average pick. I was targeting Markakis and Storen and my patience paid off. I have absolutely despised Justin Smoak ever since he started playing in Seattle. But if he can hit...
Cameron Maybin at 17.01 was two rounds after the average pick and was a difficult choice because I wanted to buy the Justin Ruggiano lottery ticket. Cameron, show me what you are made of.

I'll bet AA Yahoo, which drafted earliest, had more earliest and latest than any of the other leagues. Early drafts are so much more speculative.

Kdl - you are probably right, but its still a fun exercise.
PD - you may be right. I alone had 10 'latest' picks. Almost matches my 10 dl picks before the allstar break from last season.

I'd be surprised if there's any correlation between getting guys later than ADP and success.
I would not. Yes, there are a slew of reasons that lead to success - injuries, break outs, busts, waiver wire gold.
However, if you do the exercise of converting each draft position into auction dollars, one could make a compelling argument that getting draft bargains increases your chances of success. It's fairly simple to assign a dollar amount to each of the 400 draft slots. Ideally, we would have 500 drafts used to calculate average draft position and each player would be given an auction dollar value. Add up all the values on the team you drafted and that number will be somewhere around $260. The higher the number, the better your starting position according to the marketplace. Individual results will vary, of course, but I do believe that teams starting above $260 on average will outpreform those below $260. Otherwise, we have a pretty inefficient marketplace.

<14> I think that what you are suggesting would show a high correlation between what we collectively think is a good team and the value of the players in the draft, but the season must still be played. I think its ability to predict the winner may not be as good.

That's certainly true that the season must be played, but there is a high correlation between the ADP and performance in the macro sense. Otherwise, you would have the last round performing as well as the first round, on average.
And certainly individual efforts might not end up where they should be, in the end (that's what makes it all interesting). But the *overall* predictiveness of projections (the core of how ADP actually plays out) is sound.
Perhaps you are arguing that not all players will end up being drafted where they should--if so, I don't think anyone would argue otherwise.

What I am saying is that our collective wisdom is not as good as the ONE of us that is ultimately the winner. If you want to predict the winner amongst us, look at what the perrenial high performers are doing with their picks and you will more likely predicty the winner.

Let me be a bit more definitive.
Do you tend to stay away from using high picks on pitchers, or is that a good idea? Does using high draft picks to guarantee 3 closers improve your odds of winning or does it hurt you. Is it better to wait til late rounds to fill 3B, C and MIs or is it better to grab the best at those positions and ignore the most productive 1B/OF guys? Does the traditional ignoring of the SB category really make sense?
Bottom line is if you want anything useful from the analysis you have to ask the questions that may actually lead you to alter your strategy next time.
These are better questions to try to analyze a draft than did you draft a guy before or after the average point in which he was drafted.

Try this one for analysis. Take your starting lineups, rotations and closers. Add up their season stats from last year and see where you would finish based on last year's RIBC. Make adjustments for less than full seasons and project stats for your rookies if you need to.
Did you finish first?

if the answer is no, then you need to relook your strategy

This chart is helpful because it simply shows whether a player you picked was good value or not based on his ADP. Of course, the five drafts unfolded differently and it's a small sample size. But if you drafted a guy 5 rounds earlier than everyone else, it's pretty safe to say you would have been better off drafting someone else in that round, and waiting a couple rounds to draft the original player.

Five rounds early unless its a late round, sure, two or less and its meaningless unless its in the first couple rounds. The guys people take in the last five rounds are more about need/speculation than round.
With this sample size, what the analysis DOES tell me is that I wish I was in the draft where there were more people with a different strategy than I had. I would therfore always get my players at a bargain compared to my rival.
More than likely what happened for me is that if I took a guy far ahead of when others took him, then there was a run on the position and I needed to move before it was too late. Drafting 1 or 16 has its perks, but it also has its negative aspects. You can be forced to take guys well ahead of their ADP to avoid catastrophe because there are 30 picks between your opportunities. It is of particular significance during middle rounds when rounding out your lineup.

Looks like I got the best deals on Aybar, Kuroda, and Ichiro. And looks like I jumped the gun on Cain and Parmelee (probably due to SB and CI needs at the time). Oh well. They were both targets, sort of, and you just never know if someone else is eyeballing your sleeper or not.
11.06 Aybar, Erick 9.06(ave) 7.09(low) 11.06(high)
13.06 Cain, Lorenzo 16.10 13.06 18.11
14.11 Kuroda, Hiroki 12.04 11.06 14.11
18.11 Suzuki, Ichiro 15.10 12.04 18.11
19.06 Parmelee, Chris 23.05 19.06 25.05

Lets see how I did. First time in AAA. I am not confident with my draft. Poor excuse of doing about 4-5 drafts at once and not keeping proper tabs on my target players such as dominic brown.
1st on Harper. I was not confident he would make it back to me in round 2. 1st on Goldshmidt. Basically same as above. Last on Heyward. I feel good about that considering his potential. 1st on Miguel Montero. Surprised, his ADP in RIBC leagues is way off from other sites. What am I missing? 1st on Samardzija. 1st on Viciedo 1st on Iwakuma 1st on Bourjos Last on Wainwright. Last on Lawrie. Last on Wily Peralta Last on Romero - that ended well. 1st and last on Baker Same as Floyd Same as Delgado
Not looking like my best draft ever.

I don't know how many others do this but I try to make a point of using draft peek before submitting any of my picks (in addition to checking recent news). Pretty sure I backed out of some picks based on what I was seeing in other drafts. Sometimes you lose out on targets but getting the most "value" out of your picks is key. Especially in the first 10 rounds or so.

The only pick I really missed the mark on and over-reached was Shaun Marcum. I was just seeing something different than everyone else, and then of course he got hurt. I had great picks in Rutledge, Pierre and Reddick. Everything else, if I was first it was only be a round or two. If youre picking on the ends you can't hope your guy is going to be at .14, 27 picks later. You have to jump on them at .03.
I don't believe consistently over-reaching is necessarily going to effect performance. It's all about how you project those players and how they perform. You might find a correlation but it would probably be mathematically insignificant. You're talking about 5 data points.
