Subject: RIBC 2014: Draft discussion

The draft will be activated on Thursday afternoon, although the clock will not be turned on until Friday or whenever the first round is completed. Here are the ground rules for this year. Please read carefully, as some standards have changed from prior years.
In general, I discourage you from using a designated picker unless that is the only way to make the proper pick. The software now allows for automatic queues (with or without a time delay), and that is the preferred method for making a pick if you are unlikely to be available when your pick is due.
As such, please do not mark any queue as AVAILABLE unless you have specifically provided instructions to your designated picker(s). DP’s should only be used if you need some logic applied to the pick (e.g., don’t take someone at the same position as my pick in the previous round).
If you mark your queue AVAILABLE, that means that designated pickers (and me as commish) can see it when it is your turn to pick. Regardless, even if I can see your queue, I will not pick from it unless you have provided specific instructions. I encourage everyone else to adhere to the same standard.
Please be diligent about the current auto-pick settings for your general and round specific queues. If you do not want auto-picks to be made, then make sure that both queues - general and next pick - have auto-pick set to "No Auto-Pick". Every year, it seems that someone gets stuck with a surprise pick because auto-pick was inadvertently turned on.
Teams at the endpoint of each round will have only one clock period to make their pick. Similarly, anyone who has timed out in any round will have subsequent picks skipped until you show up to make your pick.
I will activate a 4 hour clock beginning on Friday, and this will be on for the duration of the draft, including weekends. Chronic time-out offenders may have their clocks manually shortened. The nightly clock moratorium will run from midnight until 8am EDT. This means that the moratorium will be from 9pm until 5am PDT. If you are on the West Coast and your pick comes due overnight, you will not time-out until 9am PDT. For those of you who live outside of the local US/Canadian time zones, I realize that the clock moratoriums are not ideal, but I appreciate your attempts to make it work.
The ESPN site will not be updated with draft results until the draft is over. You will need to figure out how to keep track of player availability on your own. (Of course, Draftime will not allow you to pick someone who is already drafted.)
When making your draft pick, please indicate the primary position at which you intend to use him. Do not pick anyone for the UTL slot unless he is not eligible at any other position. It is not necessary to draft a player for every position.
If you want to draft a player who is not available in Draftime, you should use the "Contact" link at the bottom of the Draftime page to request that the player be added to the system. Please anticipate these situations so that we don’t have to wait. If it is you turn to pick and a player is not listed in Draftime, then you may select a player who is unlikely to be drafted at all as a placeholder, to be substituted later on. If a drafted player is not available at the ESPN site, we will also assign a placeholder until that player has been added. Once the draft is over, you may only add players who are listed at ESPN.
You may use this thread to ask questions, comment on your upcoming availability or unavailability. After two rounds have been completed, a separate thread will be set up for the collection of draft pick rationales.

The draft was just activated. The primary purpose is to allow people to get queues set up as needed, but picks can be made as well.

Guys - I just saw my pick is only a couple picks away. I've got to go out of town for work for a couple hrs or so. Just giving a heads up. I don't have time to look at available players atm. Sorry. I'll log in right when I get back home.

A separate thread has been set up as a Rationale Collection thread.
When your rationale is ready (two round lag - or sooner if you wish), just post it there, without regard to sequence. I have a process to transfer rationales over to the formal rationale thread, which I'll update approximately once per round.
This approach worked quite well for football and hoops - avoiding the need to have to insert long series of placeholders, especially when lot of picks are made from automated queues.

This "less steroids" era is tough. Less sure things out there. You'd think that in the second round you could draft someone that you felt strongly about. I'm not an Adam Jones fan at all but dang...

My first experience in the big leagues and I must say that I am quite disappointed at how little the queues are used. The number of people who average two or three hours per pick is unacceptable.
Most disturbing are the two people almost on the turn. You take two or three hours deciding on your first pick, fine... then a few minutes go by, two players are selected and you again take two or three hours? You seriously can't devise a three person queue?
Kdl212, loved the story of how Alex Rios fell into your lap.

It's not unusual for the first few rounds to move slowly. I expect that the pace will pick up soon.
It must, or we will not finish before the season starts. We should complete at least two rounds per day. We're only doing about a round per day over the weekend.

At our average pace, we'll finish on Friday. Later rounds tend to move faster, so maybe sooner. Regardless, I'm going to aim to activate the league at ESPN no later than mid-Friday so that everyone can start players for the Australia games, if desired. If the draft is still going, late draftees will just be added to rosters as they are drafted.
The first Dodgers-Dbacks game starts at 4am EDT Saturday, so for most of us, rosters will need to be in place by the end of Friday.

Is there a cumulative clock? If so, have you ever thought about adding one. I know there's some people that have ~2 hours of cumulative clock and others at 20+ hours.

There is none. Until recently, it could only be manually tracked, and we never seemed to need it.
Through round 18, only three managers in this draft have averaged more than one hour per pick (17 hours total, excluding the first round, which was untimed):
JKaye - 25:21 WG - 23:27 twilson - 21:30
Interestingly, two of those three people are near the turns, so you'd think they would have an advantage, as they'd typically be working on picks in pairs.
A "reasonable" pace for a draft is about 12 days after round one, or 2 rounds per day. That is an average of about 45 minutes per pick in total time, or 30 minutes per pick in clock time (since 8 hours of daily pause is not counted in clock time.)
If I were to set a cumulative clock, I'd probably set it around 24 hours. If a manager hit that limit, then I'd put them on a one hour clock for each pick thereafter. I'm not doing that this year, but I may implement it next year, as this draft has been slower than those of recent years. Perhaps with a cumulative clock in place, I'd never have to impose it.

Wow, I just noticed something about reeb's team. Ten of his first 15 picks are present or former Red Sox. His last four picks were also Scarlett Hose, bringing his total to 15.
I guess that would explain the Xander reach.
Funny, I didn't detect anything in his rationales. I'm guessing he has NESN on his cable package.

Seattle Zen, I've been following that Red Sox trend for the last several rounds - I was so excited when I correctly guessed the Doubront pick!! I actually count 16 total, with Ellsbury, Papelbon, Lowrie, Saltalamacchia, and Scutaro as the former Sox.

Lots of homer picks I know. Pretty bummed I missed out on Ortiz :)
I had a ridiculously busy couple of weeks and had zero time for research. After I missed my pick I just turned on my queue and pretty much forgot about it.

[49] correct. The team that got stuck with the last "pick" in the draft order selection round got the benefit of the top waiver priority to start the season.
