So painful to hear that one of the classiest players to ever play the game, and somebody who loved baseball more than anything else in his life as left us at such a young age.

Been a really tough week for the world of baseball.

Very sad to hear of his passing. I had heard about some health problems recently but didn't realize cancer was one of them.

He's been fighting cancer for about 4 years. Not something that was publicized a lot. Knew it was getting worse when he took the Leave of Absence from SDSU in March. But, they still had extended is contract to coach.

Maybe if there was more mention that this was mouth cancer, his death could be used as an example to young players of the dangers of chewing tobacco.

They just spent a lot of time talking about that on MLB Network.
In fact, they had George Will on the phone and he spent almost the entire time talking about the problems associated with chewing tobacco and the Union not letting them ban it.

Impossible guy to root against. Thought he'd be Padres manager one of these days. Sad to hear he lost his fight. Hope it opens some eyes around the league and spawns some Tony Gwynn foundations.

One of my favorite players ever except when he would beat the Dodgers! He lived not far from me in the same town for years but I never had the chance to meet him. One of my close friend's parents lived on the same street as him and said he was a fantastic person who was always outside in the winter. I love to hear about individuals who are great people off the field as well.

Not sure if anybody else is interested, but they did a memorial service for Tony at Petco Park on Thurs 26 Jun.
Hmm, won't give me the box when I try to create and insert the link.

So, I'll do it the hard way.
