I'm in a keeper baseball league and I need some advice about who to keep. Rosters are typically:

1 catcher
1 1B
1 2B
1 SS
1 3B
4 OF
1 util
3 SP
2 RP
2 P
5 bench

I'm thinking of keeping Hamels, Harvey, Fernandez, Cruz, and Springer. But other options could be Xander Bogaerts, Josh Hamilton, Pablo Sandoval and James Shields. Or I could even be a bit crazy and take a chance on a guy like Mookie Betts or Rusney Castillo - both guys that would be good to have, but not sure they're keeper-worthy.

How many keepers do you get? Is there a cost associated with any of them?

You have a lot of quality keepers and I wouldn't argue against Hamels, Fernandez and Harvey.
Probably wouldn't keep Nelson Cruz over Bogaerts in a keeper league though.

But you have Cole Hamels who is solid then you have 2 pitchers who are going to be boom or bust coming off pretty bad injuries. Fernandez and Harvey could be the 2 best pitchers in the majors in 2016 or they could not do as well after their arm injuries. Personally I'd keep 1 and try to trade the other just because thats a lot of risk to take.

If you aren't worried about 2015 so much, drop cruz for either Betts for Bogaert (I'd probably go Betts) and keep Hamels, Fernandez, Harvey, Springer, Betts.

I get to keep up to 5 keepers. Each player kept means I miss a draft pick for that round (e.g. keep 1 player, lose first round pick. keep 5 players, lose picks for first 5 rounds). Most people keep 5 players though.

I have been worried about Cruz and his age, but he had a great 2014. But my team was too old last year, so maybe Betts or Bogaerts would be better.

And I agree with the risk of Harvey/Fernandez. Fortunately the draft won't be until March sometime so I can see how they both look in early spring training.

Thanks for the advice.

I dont think Fernandez is supposed to be ready to go until mid-season.

I am not sure I keep any of them- what pick will you have next year?

I would definitely keep Hamels, Harvey, Springer and possibly Fernandez.

Cruz I don't think will have a good season in 2015. Either keep 4 or flip a coin with the others in consideration.

my reasoning is which one of those players would you pick in the 1st round? 2nd Round? 3rd?

The way I see them (rounds)
Hamels mid to late 6th
Harvey 8th
Springer 4th
Cruz 5th
Fernandez 10th

If everyone else keeps their 5 you will get a shot to get them back, or possibly a better player in those spots.

You have to remember Wiggs - there's going to be very thin pickings for the first few rounds. The pool available might not really be any better. Plus Fernandez might be 10th round this year as a projection but what about 2016? Same with Harvey.

I agree with Wiggs. I dont see the point in keeping someone who is not a top 70 player. Now that does need to be age adjusted, so someone like fernandez should still be kept.

Also since your keeper list doesnt have any studs I am assuming you will be going into the draft behind so may want to take gambles on youth over someone like Cruz who will have limited value in a couple years when you have established a more competitive list.

How are prospects and youth normally drafted? Do they go in the early rounds or do the picks not deviate much from the standard drafts?

The value of your players vs the value of the players the other managers have to drop is what should guide your decisions.

As an oversimplified rule of thumb, you should not keep any player unless his ADP is 70 or less (5 rounds times 14 teams). Theoretically there will be better in the draft.
