0 Subject: RIBC 2015: Preliminary organization

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Fri, Feb 20, 2015, 12:20

Here is the plan.

I have sent emails to the 16 invitees for the 2015 RIBC league. So far, I have 15 acceptances and one who has not yet responded.

I have sent emails to the 32 managers who prequalified for one of the two AAA leagues, based on last year's results. Khahan will be the commissioner of the AAA Yahoo league, and wolfer will be the commish of the ESPN league. So far, I have 10 acceptances for the ESPN league and 12 for the Yahoo league. One person has declined, and nine have not yet replied. If you think you should have been in that group (generally, anyone not returning to the RIBC or any QL manager who finished in the top 9 of last year's standings), then check at the email address that you used at the beginning of last season. If you still think you are missing the email, then let me know ASAP at davehall@rotoguru2.com.

Last year, we also had two AA leagues, which means we had 80 available managerial slots (five leagues with 16 managers each). Nine of those AA slots had to be filled with duplicate teams - meaning that we had only 71 different managers participating overall. Assuming typical manager attrition, it's not clear that we can still fill enough slots to make two AA leagues work. Thus, at this point I am only committing to one AA league, which will be hosted at ESPN with Judy as Commissioner.

I just sent out an email to all QL managers last year who did not prequalify for a AAA spot. I asked those managers to let me know if they are interested in a spot in the one AA league - no later than Feb 28.

It is still possible that we'll have enough interested managers to fill a second AA league. If so, I will need to recruit a commissioner for that second AA league. But that's premature at this point.

For now, I need the best count of interested managers that I can get.

So, if you played in any of the RIBC leagues last season, by now you should have received an email from me asking for your interest this year. If your email address has changed since last year, or if you didn't receive it for any reason, please let me know ASAP. I have asked everyone to respond by the end of February. At that time, I'll decide whether we have ample interest to try to form a second AA league. If not, it is possible that some interested managers might be left on the sidelines this year.

I'll provide updates on manager responses over the next week.

Meanwhile, if you did not participate in a RIBC league last year and would like to be considered for a AA league opening, please post in this thread (provide your email) or send me an email.

Thanks as always to Dave for putting this together.

Two pieces of philosophy for us to ponder as a group - obviously Dave will make this call, but these are things I've been wondering about for years.

- If we have 3 QL's, do we prefer 2 AAA, 1 AA (current) or 1 AAA, 2 AA? The second option makes AAA mean more, rather than being a repository of most teams. I'm on the fence on that one.

- How much turnover do we want in RIBC majors? Right now, we keep 8 in majors from year to year. Too many? Too few? Just right?

For the record, I love the RIBC format, in league. Right number of roster slots, right categories, right draft style. Anyone else have thoughts?

Agreed that if we can only support 4 leagues, then 2 AAA leagues might not be the optimal structure.

However, given uncertainty and in order to get things organized in a reasonable time frame this year, I decided to stick with two AAA leagues (one at each hosting site) for 2015.

But if we end up with just one AA league this year, I will certainly consider a different "stacking" plan for next year. Maybe one AAA and two AA. Maybe even one AAA, one AA, and one A.

I also love the RIBC format. I think it's a good idea for all of us to do a little recruiting if we happen to know of any serious players who don't normally play RIBC. You're going to lose a few players each year so you need to keep adding them as well.

Of the 71 managers from 2014 who I have contacted via the last known email address, here is the list of those who have not yet responded (9):

Allen
Better Off Red
Donkey Hunter
drussell743
louky
Philsphan
TD
tony
Vote 4 Pedro

If you are on that list and you thought you did respond, then send me another email (davehall@rotoguru2.com). I may have lost it in the shuffle.

If you know any of these people and have another way to reach them and steer them to this thread, that would be helpful.

Status update:

The 16 teams in the RIBC are all set. A thread will be started shortly.

Of the 32 managers prequalified for AAA, 28 have responded positively, one has declined, one will let me know by Wednesday, and two (Better Off Red and TD) have not yet responded.

Of the 23 other managers who played last year but did not prequalify for RIBC or AAA, 17 have responded favorably and six have not yet responded.

So we really haven't had much attrition yet. Only one person is confirmed as out (due to a pending birth in the family). Whether or not we try to fill a second AA league depends on if/what we hear from the 8 who have yet to respond.

Rob
s R
Seattle Zen
twilson
Vampire Weekend
WG
wolfer (commish)
ywk

Yahoo (15 so far)
artforthehall
beebop
Boozer
C1-NRB
Crack Babies

Meatwads

loki
[one slot still pending]

I will send these lists (with emails) to the respective commissioners later today, so that registration can begin.

I am still waiting for some of the AA responses, although I do have just enough for one league right now. Since I gave those people until the end of Feb to respond, I'm going to wait to see if any more come forward. Right now, though, it's looking like we'll have just one AA league.

Here are the 16 teams who are offered a spot to play in AA. 14 of these teams are returning from either a AAA or AA league in 2014. Two are new entrants - Kyle & gramazins (post 8 & 12).

Judy will be the commish, and the league will be hosted at ESPN.

AA Managers
Bean
Da Bomb
Fosten
GoatLocker
gramazins
gurudan
Judy
Kyle
louky
maspero
MBT
Perm Dude
SparkyAnne
Toral
Valkyrie
wiggs

As of this time, there is only one team on the waiting list - slizz (post 18).

Five of last year's manangers never responded (to my email, or to requests in this thread):
Vote 4 Pedro
Philsphan
Donkey Hunter
Allen
tony

Since the deadline for responses has passed, if any of these managers want to play, they'll have to be on the waiting list. Ditto for any other newcomers.

Since a full league is 16 managers, it seems unlikely that we'll get enough managers to field a second AA league. But we can continue to leave it open for now. Bear in mind that an extra AA league will also need someone to serve as commissioner.

I'll send Judy a list of manager emails today so that she can begin the registration process.

Might be worth quantifying what will happen next year. Guru, you might not be in a hurry to do that, but it might be helpful for people to know where they need to finish this year.

Here's a starting point:

Majors - 7 from Majors, 6 (3 each) from each AAA, 1 from AA, Guru

AAA - 6 from Majors, 6 (3 each) from AAA, 4 from AA

AA - 1 from Majors, 20 (10 each) from AAA, 11 from AA

Or by finish:

Majors - 1-8 from Majors, 1-3 from AAA, 1 from AA, Guru

AAA - 9-15 from Majors, 4-6 from AAA, 2-5 from AA

AA - 16 from Majors 7-16 from AAA, 6-16 from AA

At this point, with only two managers on the waiting list and all current spots filled, there seems to be a lack of interest in opening a second AA league.

The typical rite of succession would be as follows, assuming that we continue with two AAA leagues next year:

RIBC
Top 6 from RIBC
Top 3 from each AAA
Winner of AA
Me
two bubble teams (Guru selection)

AAA
RIBC teams not remaining in RIBC
All AAA and AA teams finishing in 10th place or better.

I'm not going to be more definitive than that. "Bubble teams" would typically be selected based on ties or closeness of finish, as well as attrition, behavior issues, and other intangibles.

It has occasionally been suggested that we move toward a single AAA league, perhaps with two AAs or even a AA & A. That gets more complex to design, and would make it more problematic to host leagues at both Yahoo and ESPN (as is currently the case with AAA), and might interfere with optimal selection of commissioners. Not sure the benefits outweigh the complexities.

A few thoughts on next years ribc set up Guru:

1. If there is only 1 AAA league it should be espn like the big league is for consistency. This coming from a stalwart yahoo user. And if that's the way it is because of support issues, then that's the way it is. I can't imagine (m)any people would opt out because they absolutely cannot do Yahoo when there isn't the support for a choice.

2. Having 2 AAA and 1 AA would seem to water down AAA. If you get into AAA you are either fighting for ribc or more than likely staying put in AAA with very little chance of going down to AA. It makes the middle leagues the true minor leagues.

3. Only 1 AA league does make it more difficult to accommodate new blood. Even if new blood trickles in at only 1-3 people per year. But with the set up you mentioned in post 24 there would be 6 people from each AAA league and 6 from AA for 16 spots. right there is an overload with presumable the best of the rest staying in AAA. Really no room at all for new players or players returning from an hiatus to join in.

4. With 2 AA and 1 AAA the AAA is more meaningful, the penalty for losing is more meaningful and there is more room to shuffle people and play and allow new people in.

You could do something like this for a set up:
ribc - top 7 from ribc + you (or top 8 if you are in top 7).
Top 4 from AAA
Top 1 from each AA
2 bubble players

ribc aaa: RIBC members that finished 8-14
AAA that finished 5-9
AA that finished 2nd and 3rd from each AA league.

AA: Anybody who didn't play the year before
ribc 15th and 16th place
AAA 10-16th place
AA - 4th to 16th place finishers

If you notice finishing 15th or 16 in RIBC gets you sent back to AA this way as does finishing 10th-16 in AAA. Some parts are a little easier and other parts would be more harsh. With the bubbles you can always use those 2 to shuffle around the last 2 ribc finishers.

As for commissioners - you have 3 or 4? of us who seem to play every year and have always seemed willing to do whatever is necessary at whatever level. I'll only speak for myself but I'd be fine filling in where ever a commish is needed as well.

Are numbers are dwindling, not increasing. Making it more difficult to get into The Show is not the route I think we should be taking right now. Have a mediocre year in AAA and you get sent to AA. Lots of people would simply drop out rather than try to fight their way to the bigs for the next two years.

That's true SZ the set up I did would have a mediocre year in AAA sent back down to AA. But at the same time, being in AAA has a better chance of landing you into the bigs. That's the trade off. I don't think its as steep of a climb and as daunting of a task with the set up in 25 as it is right now or has been in years past.

right now only 1st place in AA gets in and 1st and 2nd in AAA get in. Going with 1 AAA and 2 AA, only first 2 in AA gets in but a top 4 finish in AAA gets in.

AFAIK We've been working with one AA team in RIFC the last few years and it's worked fine. I'd prefer to have two AAA teams, mainly for continuity's sake. The last two spots: I'm thinking one goes to the 7th in RIBC, one goes to the best of the two AAA leagues not in the top 3.

Another option is to reduce the league size to 14 teams, like RIFC. That gives you 8 more teams to fill out the second AA league, and allows a better chance to move up from any league to the next. That is admittedly the more drastic option, as it fundamentally changes the league.

Pretty sure we had 2 AA leagues the last few years. Attrition is beating out continuity. Another option is to recruit more friends and maintain 2 AA leagues. :)

I would love to see us be big enough for 3 AA leagues. I think at one point we were there?

Lets keep getting Guru some ideas. RIBC leagues are the most fun I've had in fantasy baseball. The idea of a 70+ manager league is amazing. Would love to keep these going.

I like the idea of two AAA and as many AA as we could support. As AA commish, I see a lot of familiar "faces" who will be working very hard to get back to AAA for 2016. This competition is healthy.

We've dropped to one AA league for hoops and football for several years now. But I think this is the first year we had only one AA for baseball. (Never had 3 AA leagues though.)
