Subject: RIBC 2015: Draft discussion

The draft will be activated this afternoon (Monday, Mar 16), although the clock will not be turned on until the first round is completed. The official start time of the draft is Tuesday morning, but once Draftime is activated, picks can be made, and (more importantly) queues can be set. Here are the ground rules for this year. Please read carefully, as some standards have changed from prior years.
In general, I discourage you from using a designated picker unless that is the only way to make the proper pick. The software now allows for auto-pick queues (with or without a time delay), and that is the preferred method for making a pick if you are unlikely to be available when your pick is due.
As such, please do not mark any queue as AVAILABLE unless you have specifically provided instructions to your designated picker(s). DP’s should only be used if you need some logic applied to the pick (e.g., don’t take someone at the same position as my pick in the previous round).
If you mark your queue AVAILABLE, this means that designated pickers (and me as commish) can see it when it is your turn to pick. Regardless, even if I can see your queue, I will not pick from it unless you have provided specific instructions. I encourage everyone else to adhere to the same standard.
Please be diligent about the current auto-pick settings for your general and round specific queues. If you do not want auto-picks to be made, then make sure that both queues - general and next pick - have auto-pick set to "No Auto-Pick". Every year, it seems that someone gets stuck with a surprise pick because auto-pick was inadvertently turned on or left on.
Teams at the endpoint of each round will have only one clock period to make their pick. Similarly, anyone who has timed out in any round will have subsequent picks skipped until you show up to make your pick.
I will activate a 4 hour clock beginning at the end of round 1, and this will be on for the duration of the draft, including weekends. Chronic time-out offenders may have their clocks manually shortened. The nightly clock moratorium will run from midnight until 8am EDT. This means that the moratorium will be from 9pm until 5am PDT. If you are on the West Coast and your pick comes due overnight, you will not time-out until 9am PDT. For those of you who live outside of the local US/Canadian time zones, I realize that the clock moratoriums are not ideal, but I appreciate your attempts to make it work.
You should anticipate that we will average at least two rounds completed per day. Early rounds tend to be a little bit slower. Later rounds generally pick up the pace.
The ESPN site will not be updated with draft results until the draft is over. You will need to figure out how to keep track of player availability on your own. (Of course, Draftime will not allow you to pick someone who is already drafted.)
When making your draft pick, please indicate the primary position at which you intend to use him. Do not pick anyone for the UTL slot unless he is not eligible at any other position. It is not necessary to draft a player for every position.
If you want to draft a player who is not available in Draftime, you should use the "Contact" link at the bottom of the Draftime page to request that the player be added to the system. Please anticipate these situations so that we don’t have to wait. If it is you turn to pick and a player is not listed in Draftime, then you may select a player who is unlikely to be drafted at all as a placeholder, to be substituted later on. If a drafted player is not available at the ESPN site, we will also assign a placeholder until that player has been added. Once the draft is over, you may only add players who are listed at ESPN.
You may use this thread to ask questions, comment on your upcoming availability or unavailability. After two rounds have been completed, a separate thread will be set up for the collection of draft pick rationales.

Just a heads up I may be out of commission later in the week. Have enough players pre ranked for 9 rounds (not that I want to draft that way). Will have autopick on when unavailable. Will rank more.

Draft rationale collection thread has started: Draft rationale collection thread
Feel free to include any rationale you may have had for selecting your draft position.
Post them as you can. Don't worry about keeping in pick sequence, as they'll be copied over to the official rational thread in the proper order.
Let's try to keep this updated within two rounds. Thanks.

Drafttime recovered this morning. Since people may have been unable to properly set up or update queues overnight, I have temporarily suspended the clock. Once it appears that we have regained the flow, I will resume the 4-hour clock.

I think JeffG has made a queueing error, probably thinking he was picking Kyle Seager (who was drafted in rnd 4) rather than Corey Seager (who may not even make the majors this year).
JeffG is actually hospitalized during this draft, awaiting surgery, so he's keeping queues set up well in advance to avoid delaying the draft - knowing that when he comes out of surgery, he'll be incapacitated for at least 36 hours.
As such, I emailed him to give him the option to replace the pick.
We can continue forward, but if/when he emails me, I'm giving him the option to change pick 9.09.

We're on a good overall pace, which should get us finished by March 31.
Thanks to everyone for keeping relatively current with rationales. That said - Graydog, bmd, and ksoze - you're starting to lag behind a little. Most people should at least be through round 11 rationales by now.

Sorry, got behind due to an earlier than normal alarm this morning, had them caught up through the 10th prior to leaving this morning, should only be behind on the 11th now and will have that posted once the kids are down for the night. Again, my apologies.

I am not sure why that pick wasn't auto, eventually the auto pick went through. It was a pick based queue, maybe I hadn't set it to auto. If that is the case it is strange that it auto picked after 4 hours.

[30] It was a system glitch. I emailed KKB at draftime last night, and he fixed it - which is why the pick went through late.

Looks like we should finish the draft by Monday night.
As you make your final picks, please post any remaining rationales in the collection thread.
I'll try to get the draft results entered into ESPN on Tuesday, after which I'll activate the league. All undrafted players will initially be on waivers.

I just entered the draft results on ESPN.
Due to some strange glitch, I was unable to enter Johnny Giavotella directly, so I subbed in Josh Willingham during the draft entry process, and then swapped him for Giavotella after the draft. So that's all set.
For Youngroman, Odubel Herrera was not yet listed on ESPN. I used Derek Jeter as a placeholder. When Herrera is listed, I'll make the switch. (someone needs to point it out when the time comes.) If YR drops Jeter before Herrera is available, then Herrera is no longer protected after that.

[37] Baez swap done.
Everyone else should review their roster to make sure all players were correctly entered.
Undrafted players are all on waivers now. Looks like they will clear on Thursday. Waiver priority is the reverse of the draft selection round order (which is not the same as the draft order.)

Guru - you were too fast. Odubel Herrera is available now. you can do the switch. his position (SS) is odd. on his ESPN player page he is listed as a 2B and the position he will play most is OF. wherever that SS comes from. the last time he started a game at SS was in 2012.
