2015 GILLETTE HOME RUN DERBY FORMAT
(Rules/information gathered from multiple sources)

• Single-elimination, bracket-style tournament; the loser in each round is immediately eliminated.
• In any round, once the higher-seeded ("home") batter passes the lower-seeded ("away") batter in home runs, the round will be stopped and the winner will advance.
• Each batter gets five minutes per round; the timer starts when the first pitch is thrown.
• Any home runs hit during the final minute of each turn will stop the timer immediately; the timer will not restart until after the batter hits a ball that is not a home run or swings and misses at a pitch.
• One minute of bonus time will be awarded for two home runs that each equal or exceed 420 feet. Thirty seconds of bonus time will be awarded for one home run that equals or exceeds 475 feet. Both bonuses can be earned by hitting two home runs that equal or exceed 420 feet, with one of them reaching 475 feet (resulting in a total bonus of one minute and thirty seconds).
• Any bonus time awarded will be added at the end of the initial five-minute round; the timer will not stop during the bonus time period.
• Each batter can use one 45-second time-out per round.

* * * In each bracket, the higher seed will hit second. * * *

Round 1 (with seedings)

GROUP A
#1 Albert Pujols, Angels, vs. #8 Kris Bryant, Cubs
#4 Joc Pederson, Dodgers, vs. #5 Manny Machado, Orioles
The two winners of this bracket will advance to Round 2.

GROUP B
#3 Josh Donaldson, Blue Jays, vs. #6 Anthony Rizzo, Cubs
#2 Todd Frazier, Reds, vs. #7 Price Fielder, Rangers
The two winners of this bracket will advance to Round 2.

Round 2 (Semifinal)
The two winners of the Round 2 matchups, one from each bracket, will advance to Round 3.

Round 3 (Final)
The batter who hits more home runs wins the title of Home Run Derby champion.

Tiebreaker
If two batters are tied at the end of a round, they will go into a 90-second swing-off. In a swing-off, the timer cannot stop for any reason and no bonus time can be claimed. Should a tie remain at the end of a swing-off, batters will move into successive three-swing swing-offs until a winner is decided.

Your challenge:

A) Pick the two players who will hit the fewest home runs in Round 1 (not necessarily one from each bracket): 1 point per correct selection. If there is a tie for futility, any two players tied for the fewest home runs will count. One-time "Moment of Zen" bonus of 1 point if one of the players you picked fails to hit any home runs.
B) Pick any three of the four players who will advance from Round 1 to Round 2: 2 points per correct selection.
C) Pick the two players who will advance from Round 2 to Round 3: 4 points per correct selection.
D) Pick the overall winner, i.e., the player who will hit more home runs in Round 3 (final): 8 points per correct selection.
First tie breaker:
• Predict the total number of home runs hit in Round 3 (closest to the actual total, whether over or under); if the final round goes to a swing-off, those home runs count toward the total.
Second tie breaker, if necessary:
• Predict the number of home runs hit in Round 3 by the winner (closest to the actual total, whether over or under); if the final round goes to a swing-off, those home runs count toward the winner's total.

Entries close with the first pitch to the first participant in the Home Run Derby competition.

P.S.: No bonus points for pointing out that Fielder's first name has been spelled above as "Price."

Khahan: For (B), pick only three of the players who will advance to Round 2, not all four. Which player do you want to drop: Pederson or Donaldson?

I don't know about this format. The cameras can't keep pace with the action. Seems a little odd that we miss a few swings because the camera doesn't have time to switch back.

The bonus is for accurately predicting who will absolutely suck, and man, I'm good at that recently. But with this new format even MIKE PIAZZA would hit one, so I don't see anyone collecting.

And as we stand right now the finals are starting in just a few minutes and Mr. Lemoose is the only one who has a finalist picked for this round.

Congrats, LeMoose

This story cracks me up Josh Hamilton didn't win the Home Run Derby, but people think it was the greatest performance ever.

Personally, I think it is the greatest Josh Hamilton example of being Josh Hamilton. He binges on home runs in the first rounds, just completely goes overboard, then doesn't show up when it matters because he is hungover...

That is funny. Shows the intelligence of twitter. I'd put Abreu's 2005 and McGwire's 1999 Fenway appearance ahead of Hamilton, definitely.

I remember those moon shots McGwire put up and out of Fenway park clearly.

I'd also have to put Frazier's 2015 appearance ahead of him on the list.
