Subject: RIBC 2016 - preliminary steps
Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Tue, Feb 16, 2016, 16:28
I have sent out emails to the 16 managers who have qualified for the RIBC this year. I'm still waiting to hear back from a few of those people.
I have also sent out a general inquiry to everyone who participated in one of the RIBC leagues last year, plus a number of others who participated in past years, plus a few others. At this point, I just want to get a preliminary count - before deciding how many leagues to aim for, and how to stack them.
So, if you have played before, please check your email. Look in your spam folder if you don't see it. Regardless, if you are interested in participating in a qualifying league this year, please send an email to me at davehall@rotoguru2.com
If you want to be included this year, you should be aware of the following general requirements:
1. You need to be reachable by email. When we make league assignments - probably in early March - we need to be sure we can reach you to get you registered at your league site and at Draftime.
2. The drafts will mostly take place during the second half of March. You should generally be available in the window from March 10-April 1. The MLB season begins on April 3. We will use Draftime.com for the slow draft. These drafts typically take around 2-3 weeks to complete.
Once I get a better head count, I'll follow-up with more details.

I'm up to 54 total acceptances (including the top RIBC league). We need 64 to completely fill four 16-team leagues.

[27] Evan has twins due in March - so obviously, he is no longer in control of his life. Hopefully we can get him back next year.
We now have 59 acceptances. I have not yet heard from the following six: Allen damoose drussell743 GoatLocker McKitrick Rob
If we get five yesses from that list, we'll have four full leagues. That's unlikely, as three of those people sat out last year.
In any event, it looks like we'll have four leagues again this year. If we have any openings left, we can fill them with duplicate teams, if needed.
If you have not played before would like to be on a waiting list, please post in this thread, and provide an email address.
If you are already playing in an RIBC league and have a friend who might enjoy it, ask him/her.
Regardless, note that the drafts will mostly take place during the second half of March. You should generally be available in the window from March 10-April 1. The MLB season begins on April 3. We will use Draftime.com for the slow draft. These drafts typically take around 2-3 weeks to complete.

It's early enough to consider changes to the league seeding formats for four teams vs. five teams. Last year we kept two AAA teams, but other alternatives would be two AA teams, one AAA team, or going with four levels - A, AA, AAA, RIBC. I'm not sure how all of that would fit as far as moving up and down, but I would volunteer to work out a plan to do that.

I know I'm not in the ribc but since all leagues still use the same rules there's something I'd like to bring up.
Saves is a very narrow category. Its easy to manage in 10 and even 12 team leagues. But when you start getting into leagues the size of ribc they can be problematic. Closer changes due to injury usually means the fastest on the draw benefits. Is there any interest in opening the Saves category to Save + Holds. This would presumably open up the very limited market and make a whole category much less volatile and susceptible to injuries, committees, or poor performance. Saves stands out because it truly is different from the other 10 categories. No other category has such a narrow focus with a rules-driven small pool.

[34] This idea broached a couple seasons ago, and although I thought it might make sense (for some of the reasons you articulated), it was fairly soundly defeated.

Adding saves plus holds totally eliminates punting that category.
I never tried it, but it's been used successfully in the past.

I agree 100% with Khahan. I feel the saves category completely overvalues closers. There are several setup men that are just as good or better than the closers, as shown year after year by the turnover.
As far as saves go in the RIBC, the part that bothers me the most is the FACT that I'm forced to reach for a closer (usually 2) if I want to compete in saves. And without question there are always better hitting and SP options available at that time.
I know I didn't really add much to the conversation but I fully support changing to S+HD.

I would LOVE to have saves + holds.
Agree that saves is too narrow a category, devalues set up men which is now a hugely important category/strategy for a real manger on the field, prevents those quickest to the news from grabbing a "new" closer before anyone else even realizes it. Set up men also give you K's and now could give much more!!

I'm just about done with assigning managers to leagues. Should be done in the next day.
We still need one more manager for AA. If we don't get a newcomer, then I'll look for some existing AAA manager to take an extra AA team.

I just emailed each of the commissioners a listing of their managers.
For the AAA leagues, I was unable to satisfy all preferences for hosting site, as there were a few too many who preferred ESPN over Yahoo. I did the best I could on that front.
Managers should be hearing from their commissioner in the next day or so, hopefully.
We still have one open spot in the AA league.

Last spot in AA league has been filled. As long as all volunteers appear for active duty, the leagues are full.
