0 Subject: RIBC 2016: any interest in FAAB?

One of the common complaints in the RIBC leagues is that the manager with the fastest reaction time gets the latest hot free agent (e.g., a newly annointed closer, or a surprise rookie call-up.)

One way of addressing this is to use a FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget). For those who play in the RIFC football leagues, this is similar to the blind bidding waiver process - although it would apply to all free agent pickups.

Under this approach at ESPN (as I understand it), each team starts the season with a budget allotment - let's say $1000. During the season, free agents are only processed once each day - probably at 11pm ET. If you want to add a free agent, you place a bid that day for any amount up to your remaining available FAAB funds. At the end of the day, free agents are awarded to the highest bidder. If your bid wins, those funds are deducted from your FAAB balance.

Ties are broken in inverse order of standings (as of the beginning of the week).

Bids of $0 could be placed, so if you run out of FAAB funds, you can still pick up players that no one else bids on.

This would eliminate the ability to add a player and insert him into the lineup for the same day. All free agent claims would be processed once per night. This would also replace the typical waiver processing for dropped players.

I have not played in a baseball league with this approach, so there may be details or issues that I'm missing. I assume a similar process is available at Yahoo, although I have not looked there.

Is there any interest in using a FAAB approach this year? Looking for votes and/or feedback.

I really don't enjoy that aspect of the football league. To be honest I would rather deal with 'fastest to they keyboard' than deal with FAAB. I did one FAAB baseball league one year and it was a horrible experience for me. My vote would be No for FAAB.

I vote 100% yes

no. This is a daily roster league, it needs to allow for daily waiver/free agent transactions.

This method would allow for daily transactions. We could set them for any time of the day if needed. It could be at 11 AM every day if people prefer to make those decisions the day of. But a transaction will happen every day for those that want it.

Never heard of this before. Sounds interesting. As someone who is slow on the trigger with call ups or players whose role suddenly changes, it might benefit me, although it would be a learning curve to compute/guess price points.

I will miss doing game day pickups.

Not sure of all the workings, if I am not winning bidder for A, can I get B, but not both - Assume like waivers you can. Assume it runs daily pre season post draft as well. Assume dropped players also still go through 2 day waiver or does that go away?

Yes, I'd be willing to try this.

Here is a link to the ESPN fantasy FAAB feature:

How to use ESPN's new FAAB feature

There are still some questions I have that are not addressed in this article - such as if/how bids can be prioritized or conditional.

I was in an ESPN baseball league with FAAB last year. Claims were processed daily at 11 AM. We could submit as many claims as we wanted in a single prioritized list. The system would then process as many as could be successfully completed.

As an example, let's say that an Owner puts in three claims:

1. Add Player A/Drop Player Y
2. Add Player B/Drop Player Y
3. Add Player C/Drop Player Z

Let's assume that no other owners submit bids. In this case, claims 1 and 3 will be successful.

ESPN isn't quite as versatile as MFL, with the main difference being that MFL allows owners to create multiple prioritized lists. There is no way for the Owner above to tell the system not to process claim 3 if claim 1 is successful.

If there are any other details you wish to know, just ask.

To JeffG's question, waivers are separate from FAAB. That policy can be set separately by Guru.

1 big issue with FAAB is that now I can log in, pick up who I want, push to the next day when he's on the roster and put him in my line up. All in 1 sitting.

With a system like FAAB I have to put in my bids and then be able to log in before game times the next day to set my roster. I'm able to stay active and do daily transactions BECAUSE it is a 1 step process. When I have a particularly busy week with client meetings, kids activities etc, I can always log in at 11pm, look over the next days roster and make the changes I want to make. With FAAB I'm now tied to 2 times. First time is whenever bids need to be in by. This can probably be set late and honestly wouldn't be much of a roadblock.
The second is the big issue. If there are day games I now need time the next day to log in again before the game starts, and if I got the player I wanted set him in. If not...well how is that handled? Lets say somebody goes down with an injury? If the player I want to replace him goes to somebody else do I simply lose a whole day of stats while I hope somebody else to clear FAAB and make my roster?

As much as I do not like to see people snatch up players before many of us even realize the call up/injury/demotion, this is a process that is way too hectic for a season with daily lineup. So I agree with Khahan.
Sometimes I need to set a lineup for a couple days and just would not be able to get to a computer to make the requests. Also we would all have to figure our the$$$ value of our bids.
This is way too complicated and time consuming.
Football is different, once a week and is manageable.
This is totally not.

I vote no, for two reasons, both already mentioned.

1. Daily tinkering is fun (especially for a late game, but right before an early game starts)

2. You have to remember to activate the guy you claimed. There will be a metric ton of empty active slots.

I can deal with it in football, once a week for 13 games. It's still a drag but has to be done. No way I could deal with it in a full baseball season. Way too much work and very restricting. I can see this being great for people who make 20 transactions all season.

I haven't seen enough interest in this to even call for a vote. While I am sympathetic to those who feel disadvantaged by being less able to react to the latest news quickly, I don't think there are that many situations during the season when this really matters.

So we will stick with the status quo.
