No links that I see yet but I got a pop up alert on my phone of the following trade with pretty major implications:
Red Sox get Chris Sale from White Sox
White Sox get Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech and 2 more prospects

I gotta say, as much as I love the pitching this adds I do NOT like this deal if its going thru as reported. Giving up too big of a chunk of their youth.

Khahan - you have 3 years of cost control over an annual Cy Young candidate. Your time is now. You go for it.

Moncada is the real deal - you have to give something to get something.

Kopech is the wild card. If he turns into Justin Verlander in 3 years (no way Kopech sees the majors until 2018), then sure, the Red Sox might have given up too much.

Basabe is another decent prospect. The 4th guys is filler/fodder.

Gotta go for it with the overall team the Red Sox have. The Thornburg trade is really nice too for their bullpen. Will a Bautista or EE come on a discounted deal to dh???

PLUS --- they still have Benintendi, Devers and Groome, so its not like the cupboard is bare!

Looks better to me than the Adam Eaton trade!

I don't think either are horrible trades. Boston got a lot in return. I just think they gave up too much. Wish they wouldn't have included Moncana & Kopech both.

And I'm seeing the Eaton trade get universally panned by fans. However - Giolito is STILL a prospect. Eaton, while he may not be much in fantasy circles, is a damned good OF with a team friendly contract for a few years. He hits for average, scores runs like crazy, steals a base here or there, hits a handful of homeruns, is an above average base runner and a well above average fielder. He's exactly the kind of player who's reputation among fans is hurt by fantasy rather than helped by it.

I like Eaton but I still prefer the Boston trade from a buyer perspective. In the Boston one they get an ace at a steady "low" salary. Eaton is solid, though his centerfield defense was trending downward prior to moving to mostly RF. He may have some intangibles I'm not aware of but he just doesn't jump out a whole lot. The appeal of him is that he's above average, in his prime, and cheaply controlled for 5 more seasons. I view both prospect packages as fairly comparable

What Tumpqer said on Eaton. Nice player....I guess it goes to show what a 'cost controlled' player capable of CF with decent hitting is worth! Still seems like an overpay from WAS perspective, particularly considering (as noted by Thumpqer) Eaton's declining CF defense.

A Nats fan perspective on the Eaton trade...

CF has been a bit of an issue for WAS since Span left after 2014. Here are the number of players who started more than 10 games in CF over the past few years:
2016: 3 - Revere (66), Taylor (46), Turner (44)
2015: 3 - Taylor (89), Span (61), Harper (12)
2014: 1 - Span (144)
2013: 1 - Span (145)

Taylor is still young (25) and might be able to put some things together, but his career so far is just .228/.281/.363/.644. And his BIS DRS (defensive runs saved) was -28, -3, and -11 for 2014-16. He has a LOT of work to do to become the next Span for WAS.

But what about ROY-candidate Turner (23 years old)? Like Rendon playing 2B in 2013, it's not the best long-term place for him. The reality is that Espinosa is an off-the-bench/fill-in-for-a-DL player at best, but he started 143 games at SS. Turner needs to be at SS for the next 5+ years for WAS.

A 3B, SS, 2B of Rendon, Turner, and Murphy is solid. Harper in RF and Werth in LF (until the wheels fall off completely) is solid. There are plenty of guys for 1B, including Zimmerman (until the wheels fall completely off). Which leaves the Nats with a CLEAR need for a CFer.

So, they have the need. What do they have a plethora of? Pitching. Particularly, RHP prospects. Even without Giolito and Lopez, 4 of WAS's top 10 prospects are RHP: Fedde, Voth, Glover, and Cole.

Giolito barely sniffed the starting rotation with Scherzer, Roark, Gio, Strasburg, and Ross locking down spots. Most of that will continue for the next 5+ years with Scherzer signed through 2021, Strasburg through 2023, Roark through 2020, and Ross through 2021. The only spot available will be Gio after this year, but I suspect WAS will look to Cole for that spot in 2018 or sign a reasonable FA.

With a need for CF and plenty of RHP prospects, the deal makes a lot of sense for WAS. They don't need Eaton to be an All-Star; just measurably better than what they have. Span was HUGE for WAS for 2+ years, but his average was pretty much just his career .284/.350/.393/.742 with +3, -3, -23 BIS DRS. But, Span kept other players at their natural positions, which Eaton will also do. If Eaton can just be his career self of .284/.357/.414/.771 with +14, -13, -6 BIS DRS, then WAS should be in a really good spot to repeat as NL East champs...

...with all the usual caveats about health and whatnot. :)

...and just like that the Nats dispose of trade Espinosa to the Angels for a bag of balls two minor-league RHP.

If Espinoza can bat .250 even does he have value in fantasy? Seems ss/2nd base is not as shallow as it used to be. Last season in the 8-men out league (14 teams, 2nd, ss, MI) there were 68 MI rostered on the last day of the season. Espinosa was not one of them.

He hit 24HR with 70+ rbi and has all 4 infield positions available. Where does his ba need to get to in order to be considered useful?

Clay Bucholz to the Phillies from the Red Sox for minor league 2nd baseman Josh Tobias.
