The draft will be activated this evening (Tuesday, Mar 14), although the clock will not be turned on until the first round is completed. The official start time of the draft is Wednesday morning, but once Draftime is activated, picks can be made, and (more importantly) queues can be set. Here are the ground rules for this year.

In general, I discourage you from using a designated picker unless that is the only way to make the proper pick. The software now allows for auto-pick queues (with or without a time delay), and that is the preferred method for making a pick if you are unlikely to be available when your pick is due.

As such, please do not mark any queue as AVAILABLE unless you have specifically provided instructions to your designated picker(s). DP’s should only be used if you need some logic applied to the pick (e.g., don’t take someone at the same position as my pick in the previous round).

If you mark your queue AVAILABLE, this means that designated pickers (and also me as commish) can see it when it is your turn to pick. Regardless, even if I can see your queue, I will not pick from it unless you have provided specific instructions. I encourage everyone else to adhere to the same standard.

Please be diligent about the current auto-pick settings for your general and round specific queues. If you do not want auto-picks to be made, then make sure that both queues - general and next pick - have auto-pick set to "No Auto-Pick". Every year, it seems that someone gets stuck with a surprise pick because auto-pick was inadvertently turned on (or left on).

Teams at the endpoint of each round will have only one clock period to make their pick. Similarly, anyone who has timed out in any round will have subsequent picks skipped until you show up to make your pick.

I will activate a 4 hour clock at the end of round 1, and this will be on for the duration of the draft, including weekends. Chronic time-out offenders may have their clocks manually shortened. The nightly clock moratorium will run from midnight until 8am EDT. This means that the moratorium will be from 9pm until 5am PDT. If you are on the West Coast and your pick comes due overnight, you will not time-out until 9am PDT. For those of you who live outside of the local US/Canadian time zones, I realize that the clock moratoriums are not ideal, but I appreciate your attempts to make it work.

You should anticipate that we will average at least two rounds completed per day. Early rounds tend to be a little bit slower. Later rounds generally pick up the pace.

The ESPN site will not be updated with draft results until the draft is over. You will need to figure out how to keep track of player availability on your own. (Of course, Draftime will not allow you to pick someone who is already drafted.)

When making your draft pick, please indicate the primary position at which you intend to use him. Do not pick anyone for the UTL slot unless he is not eligible at any other position. It is not necessary to draft a player for every position.

If you want to draft a player who is not available in Draftime, you should use the "Contact" link at the bottom of the Draftime page to request that the player be added to the system. Please anticipate these situations so that we don’t have to wait. If it is you turn to pick and a player is not listed in Draftime, then you may select a player who is unlikely to be drafted at all as a placeholder, to be substituted later on. If a drafted player is not available at the ESPN site, we will also assign a placeholder until that player has been added. Once the draft is over, you may only add players who are listed at ESPN.

You may use this thread to ask questions, comment on your upcoming availability or unavailability. After two rounds have been completed, a separate thread will be set up for the collection of draft pick rationales.

I will be collecting rationales for each pick, but on a 2-round lag. As we approach round #3, I’ll post instructions.

Looks like the East Coast is getting pummeled by snow. I'd suggest opening the draft earlier today to give the east coasters something to do today.

Hey Dave R. --- do you need the rosters from teams OTHER than the Yankees? Sanchez and Chapman so early? Geez!

I figure twilson is in the hospital. Last round he made his pick in under an hour. The speed in which he was going was so fast, it gave him whiplash. Last night he took three hours and fifty eight minutes. Is the over/under tonight three hours fifty nine?

I'm wishing I used twilson's time-milking approach right now. 11 minutes after I picked Adrian Gonzalez, news hit the web that he felt something in his elbow yesterday.

Anyone want to trade for Adrian Gonzalez? I'll take the highest draft pick I'm offered.

Our pace has been very steady throughout, averaging about 27 picks/day. This puts us on pace to finish next Wed, March 29 - which was my original target date. Drafts sometimes speed up in the later rounds, so we may do a bit better than that.

Excluding overnight pauses, 15 managers are averaging an hour or less per pick. Twilson is averaging just over 2 hours per pick. Ksoze gets the speed award, at just under 7-1/2 minutes per pick.

Good job by most of you on staying relatively current on rationales.

Rationales through round 14 are now due.

Fosten and Boozer - you are the laggards! Neither of you have posted anything since round 5. Please get caught up!

Yesterday was the Tout Wars mixed league auction. I enjoy perusing the results of these leagues, top minds competing for bragging rights. They provide insight into what I consider the best market in the competition closest to RIBC.

I was happy to see my Kevin Kiermaier pick garner a $12 price but rather surprised that my other pick on that turn, Tommy Joseph, gathered no interest and only $2.

But what was the most shocking result, a stinging, back handed rebuke to the face, was Curtis Granderson going for $11 while David Peralta went for one. I criticized Guru in my draft rationales when he took Grandy and not David. WTF, I checked the team who paid $11, it was not Curtis's father or brother. Might it be a typo? I then checked out the Mixed head-2-head, Curtis went for $4, David $2. I'm still not buying it, it must be the same sort of "NYC is the center of the universe" bias that makes people think that Brooklyn Brown ale is great. I'm telling you that Peralta is an imperial double dry hopped IPA.

It was reassuring to see that a couple teams had more than one MI that were super low budget. Yes, it's true that no one bought Detlef Schimpf's break out last season, he was a reserve round pick, but hey, Jorge Polanco was four bits!

Just after I post my rationale on Norris, which I wrote last night, I see that he got shelled today. Ah, the smell of spring is in the air.

Draft should end on Wednesday. Good pace - right on the expected target date for completion.

Please provide your remaining rationales ASAP. I'd like to have those done by Thursday night, if at all possible.

I'll plan to load all of the rosters on ESPN on Thursday, at which time all undrafted players will be placed on waivers.

For my last pick (its my turn now), Ive been trying queue Jesus Aguilar 1B, Milw, all morning.

I put the request in earlier this morning to have him added to Drafttime, hasnt happened yet.

Do you want to use a placeholder to keep things moving?

Thats the pick I want at 25

Draft results have been loaded into ESPN. Please check your rosters. A couple of players couldn't be added through the draft software, so I used placeholders and then subbed in the correct players afterwards.

As far as I know, all rosters should be correct now. But I can fix anything if you let me know.

All undrafted players are now on waivers, clearing on Friday.

I forgot to mention - initial waiver priorities are the reverse of the draft selection round. (Not the reverse of the draft order.)
