Welcome back to another exciting season of the RotoGuru Ottoneu FanGraphs League! Congratulations to mailedfoot, Seattle Zen, and thepwa for bringing home the hardware last season!
Keeper Deadline is January 31st. Be sure to get your cuts in. Each team must be under 40 players and $400.
Preferences on a draft date? Last year we drafted Monday 3/26 with a Thursday 3/29 Opening Day. However, due to the MLB Opening Series in Japan, the official start of the 2019 season is Wednesday 3/20. Was thinking somewhere between Sunday 3/10 and Monday 3/18 might be a good target. Are there any conflicts on your calendars? Do you prefer a weeknight auction or a weekend auction? Sound off below.

I'm good with either, just prefer not Wednesdays or Fridays. Kinda mad about the early start to the season - it's throwing off everything.
The 10th-13th works great for me. The 14th is a no go for me, as I will be traveling that night. 15th - 19th would be difficult, but doable. Since 18th is specifically mentioned, it would be tough, but doable, especially later in the evening, say after 8.

I'd prefer a weekday evening or Sunday night. If I remember correctly, last year we were done in less than four hours. Sunday the tenth is Daylight Savings.
Sunday the 10th works for me, or also the 10-13 window. I'm real flexible now as long as I know early what date and time. Get home from our Smooth Jazz Cruise 3 March, so anytime after that, but would like time to study a little.

Goatlocker, if you keep bringing up the "smooth jazz" cruise, you are going to be voted off the island. Ain't no one want to chance that whatever it is you caught that makes you want to listen to smooth jazz ain't contagious through the internets.
I posted saying that Sunday, March 10 looked fine then happened to check another of my leagues to check out the new ESPN website to see if it looked like it was tracking GP by position -- and saw that that league has now scheduled its draft for Sunday at 2 P.M. I may or may not be able to get that draft moved up an hour. I think that draft takes somewhere between 2-3 hours and have asked for other owners' memories. I would prefer that if we draft Sunday we move it down to 5 P.M. or 6 P.M or 7 P.M.. If there is a direct conflict, I may not be drafting in this league.
In general, I prefer weekend, and weekend afternoons; Saturday afternoon would, for the reason above be preferable to Sunday.
I can accommodate most evenings *if* I get enuf notice.

a little bit of ROFL culture here: because it is the best time zone, we use Pacific Standard Time as the default in our conversations because, hey, I'm co-commish. If you state a time in a post, better say "EST or Central" or we'll think "Best Coast Time".
March dates work for me now .. but .. I won't bore you with my "Smooth Jazz" long w/e trip to Jamaica in mid-Feb.
Of more serious concern is health issues of wife which could impact my availability in early March. If that comes to pass, proceed without me.

I've set the draft date/time as March 10 @ 7pm EST/4pm PST. If anything comes up in the meantime and this needs to be adjusted, let me know. Happy to try and accommodate everyone as best we can. Thanks folks!
BTW, if any of you are interested in another league, there is an opening in the league I mentioned above -- the one that is holding its auction March 10 at 11 A.M. Left Coast Time. (I am not the commissioner; there no other Gurupies in it. However, I recommend it highly; it is my favourite non-RIBC league.)
Short description:
It a 10-team roto league on ESPN, using contracts. Hard salary cap and 6-10 keepers followed by an auction draft. Prospect draft every year. Teams may keep up to 10 prospects.
The rules, well-written IMO, may be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x-tzcYgpEQc4UrcOTW-6Jti4Krr_c0FD/view?usp=sharing
Also available upon request is a spreadsheet so you can see the various rosters and your prospects. (Your team would be "Bat Boys", which is horrible, but the expiration-of-contract rules make it difficult to establish a dynasty and relatively easy to rebuild.)
I can send you a spreadsheet showing the current rosters of every team.
Contact me if you are interested, or have any question.

According to the Surplus Calc linked in Fosten's e-mail, Foot is the Queen Bee and we're all drones. Who will in be in the hunt for second place this year? And we all got to pay an extra ten bucks to find out?

There seem to be two teams, actually, that have accumulated an undue surplus due to the inequities of capitalism. For the sake of equity, allowing the 3 new owners to each select one player (2 coming from the team with the most surplus, 1 from the team with the second most) would create a fairer society.

You're completely right Foot...now that we've recognized the problem we should try to make the solution applicable more broadly, more like the year-end allocation system.
Let's say the 9 teams with least surplus all get to select a player, with 6 coming from the team with the most surplus, and the other 3 from the team with the second most. That should straigthen things out.

Ah, Toral. If you needed ottoneu players for food and shelter, you would have made a pretty good argument. But since you don't, you'll have to pry my Justin Turner from Charleston Heston's cold, dead claws.

Hey folks, I've recruited someone to take over the abandoned Blackhats team. He is both new to the boards and new to ottoneu, but a long-time veteran of fantasy sports. I'll let him introduce himself, as my fanfare would surely do no justice. ;-)

Hey gang! Super pumped to join and really happy to be here. My name is Devon and I'm coming to you LIVE from sunny Charleston, SC. A little bit about me: I'm a big Braves fan and huge fan of all sports of my alma mater, the South Carolina Gamecocks. I'm a strategy consultant working exclusively with colleges and universities, so that background makes the data/analytics side of baseball and fantasy baseball my favorite part of the game.
While I have been playing fantasy baseball in various formats (keeper, auction, redraft) this is my first Otteneu league and I expect there will be some learning moments for me. Brian has been super helpful getting me all set up but I promise I'll have a million questions between filling out my roster, progression to league milestones such as free agency and the draft, general "dumb new guy" questions.
I'm sure you all know each other, but if you all could provide a quick intro that would be great for me as I hope to get pretty immersed in the league. Who are you? What team do you root for? Where do you live? How did this league get started? etc.
PS: I will be changing my team name soon to exorcise the demons of the last owner and start a new, Astros-style rebuild (hopefully). Just need to come up with something appropriately witty and pithy.

Welcome, Devon. Very glad to have you and I appreciate your enthusiasm. I'm co-commish with Brian, live in Port Angeles, WA and my team is the Twins. I've been active on these Boards for twenty years now. This is my only ottoneu team and I really enjoy the format. None of us are at expert level in ottoneu. Sorry your team is such a mess and you are taking over without the benefit of participating in the draft, but I know all of us are very grateful you did, anyway.

Sorry to spam your inboxes, but if you're like me it looks like you get an email every time I start an auction. This will probably be happening for a little while, so I apologize in advance. And if anyone is feeling particularly peckish about any of my players feel free to propose a trade - everyone is available for the right price as I build this team in my own image.
Also, I hope you all understand the reference in the team name, but if not it's from the classic Phillip Roth baseball book The Great American Novel.

It is great to have you on board Devon. Post your e-mail address under your handle on this thread (mine is above) and private trade conversations can occur.
I live in Austin Tx. Graduated from college that in the '80's had the best team money could buy (SMU). Fan of all things Dallas (Rangers, Cowboys, Mavericks and Stars). Mostly retired Attny and CPA.
I love this format and think you will find it both challenging and fun. And for me, favorite feature is the ability to jettison all your mistakes each off season.
Glad to have you onboard Devon. I'm another that has been on the boards forever, but have had a few periods away due to life happening. I'm a Padres fan through and through. Live in Las Vegas. Retired / Retired, but keep getting calls to fix things.
Maybe that didn't work. email address is devon.p.mcgee@gmail.com

Hey there. Welcome aboard! Sadly, that team has been derelict for over a year now. I'm happy to see someone claim it that is willing to give it a go.
I'm also a Braves fan - I would say one of those Braves fans produced by TBS, as I grew up in DC and have lived in Colorado for the last 19 years. I got to see them at spring training this year, their last year in Orlando, during a trip to WDW, and that was a real treat. And I see them again in 2 weeks!
Alot of us have been playing fantasy sports together here for the better part of 15 years. It's a very small community but these guys and gals know their stuff. IIRC I came to this place because it was one of the few sites that had insight on a game called Smallworld, which was a stock market style sports fantasy game. That game has long since faded away, but the community remained.
Hey look, the new guy made a trade! Thanks SeattleZen for the deal, I think it gets both of us what we want.
What do you all think? Seems like a fair return for both sides to me. I'm still working to reshape my team in my image, so feel free to propose any trades for my players that you are interested in.
PS: what's going on with Fosten Red Sox? Looks like his team isn't active?

Thought it was a good trade for both of you. Still looking to see where I think I am and where I want to get to. Was wondering the same thing with Fosten.
First few weeks of Ottoneu impressions from the new guy:
- This is super fun. I am loving the format and the strategy of this league and the rebuild aspect of my team makes it even more fun. - Can you really not set your lineup on the mobile site on an iOS device? Unless I'm very stupid and completely missing it, that doesn't seem to be an option. - The lineup setting and "real-time" stat tracking leave a lot to be desired. I have had multiple occasions where my team page will report someone as starting and he's not (or vice versa) when that information is always accurate on ESPN/Yahoo. Also, real time stat tracking seems to lag at least 15 minutes behind. - There are some very weird, frustrating formatting things going on from a functionality perspective. One thing that bothers me: when you search for players and include minor leaguers, it counts their minor league stats as Fangraphs points. So the stats that someone accumulates in AAA will show the same way as an MLB player's stats. I guess this could be helpful in some context, but it's pretty annoying and frustrating when trying to find new players to target. - Did we ever figure out what happened with Fosten's team?
My gripes mostly seem like easy fixes and I would imagine they will be updated by the Ottoneu folks soon (hopefully). Thankfully the format is so much fun that it is overall still a major positive. What has everyone else thought so far? I'd love to get the message board going this season to fire up some baseball discourse and trade negotiations!

Fosten Red Sox was not my team. I am the (first place) Munson Mobsters. The manager who defaulted on payment named his team after me. Most likely because I am awesome. :-) Once again, I wanted to welcome the new managers. Glad to see that all teams are actively participating. Hope this leads to more trades and more fun. Best of luck to all.

Well, this will be my last season with Ottoneu.
I'm not at all pleased that the system doesn't tell you your bid had been bid on and raised.
51
Nerfherders
ID: 33543714 Mon, Apr 22, 2019, 16:48
Yeah it's not the most fun bidding system. You have to put enough that you can afford that you also think will win the player, but it's really tough when you absolutely need a player, any player, and can't win a bid.
Ottoneu is a good framework for a league, but there are things I would tweak a little here and there (like Home Runs allowed scoring.) Sadly, unlike most other fantasy sites, it's a locked game - every league plays by the same rules.
52
GoatLocker
ID: 403321311 Mon, Apr 22, 2019, 19:34
So, you're telling me it's a single bid and that's it, you can't go higher if you're over bid.
It will give you the player a $1 more than the next highest bid, so you can bid way over if you can take on the contract. Its just like blind bidding in RIFC.
any idea what's going on with The Kingdom? He doesn't seem to be real engaged in the league...
