ESPN launched a redesign of its fantasy hosting platform for Hoops last fall. Suffice it to say that it was fraught with issues, some which are still not fully resolved. The new design will apply to baseball as well.

I expect this will precipitate some discussion about potentially moving some ESPN leagues to Yahoo. As a consequence, I'd like to start this thread to compare the features of the two sites.

What are the advantages and limitations of each? For those who prefer one or the other, what are the deciding factors?

Having played on both in various leagues the past few years, the biggest differences for baseball are:

1. games started/played to qualify for a position
2. how they handle Ohtani

For RIBC purposes I honestly dont see a difference in features outside of those 2.

Isn't there a difference in when players can be added and still utilized on that day?

ESPN - player must be added before first game of day starts
Yahoo - player can be added and utilized up until his team's game starts

I hate the handling of GPs by position on ESPN. It is non-existent on the PC browser. It is only available on the smart phone app, which i am now obliged to reluctantly use.

You simply cannot play the game without that information. It's absurd to me that it has yet to be fixed.

Re#2 The same day waiver handling is in fact a huge and probably #1 difference.

[2] For Yahoo, I was also under the impression that, once a game is started, players on those teams are completely locked out from being added (and dropped?). You must wait until the next day to add those players. Have I stated this correctly? I believe this was the handling at one time, but perhaps is has been modified.

For this reason, I believe some Yahoo leagues have continued to use "next day" eligibility for player adds, so that managers can make their moves in the evening.

6: This was the way it was in the Yahoo league I am in. Not sure if that is a league-by-league setting or a platform-wide setting. Probably the former.

I believe there is an option to have next day waivers or same day waivers in Yahoo.

As stated before, Yahoo is much, much more generous with player eligibility. That's probably the biggest difference. For example, right now Khris Davis is a OF in Yahoo, and a UT-only in ESPN. There are many, many more examples.

Some minor things:
Yahoo shows players not in the majors as 'NA', while ESPN does not. This can be problematic if you aren't paying attention and one of your players has been demoted and/or on some kind of non-DL leave. But ESPN shows players who are 'DTD' while Yahoo does not (this mightve changed).

While Yahoo scores ratio stats to 3 digits (or more), it does not display that in the standings. You have to click on the number and a pop-up appears, and this is only for 'tied' numbers. This is somewhat annoying when logging end-year stats for record-keeping. And those extra digits disappear in the logs when the season resets.

Yahoo will not show any stats that aren't exactly what's being tracked for scoring. So you have to infer things like BB's by looking at the ratios. Again, this is only important if you're logging stats.

Yahoo has a more robust standings tracker. It has charts and graphs, and will show you standings for whatever day you like. This is nice to see if you made progress during the season. I couldn't find anything like that on ESPN.

I've found Yahoo's daily prep pages more helpful. Matchup ratings are hit and miss, but they do a good job of showing L/R matchups for platoons, etc.

ESPN's player rater is probably better than Yahoo's. I believe Yahoo's is based on standard 5x5 no matter what stats you're league is using.

The Ohtani handling, tho this point is moot this season. Maybe Yahoo fixes this for next year.

Generally Yahoo is better, and would be easily better for me if they fixed the ratio digits thing in the standings. Just give me three digits!

I've been in an ESPN and a Yahoo league every year for over a decade and I always prefer the ESPN platform, though just slightly. I prefer ESPN's position eligibility. I have always liked ESPN's platform on PC's and their mobile one more than Yahoo's, but if it is changing, maybe I won't like the change.

I will, occasionally, read the content on ESPN's site, but if more and more of it goes to ESPN+, that may change. Can't say I ever read the content on Yahoo.

#6 - Yes, if you are same day transactions that is how Yahoo works. And its why we've generally used next day transactions in most Yahoo leagues. No lock out where you can't add/drop.

The Yahoo lock only locks those in your starting lineup until the 3am overnight. You can still add or drop anyone from your bench.

And its better than ESPN in that the lock is gametime specific. You can add a player and start him last minute if the starter gets hurt and you want to hop on his backup. ESPN turna the page on the day when the first game starts which is such an arbitrary time. It would be ok in hoops i think but with an early game on most days in MLB it makes same day nearly worthless.

And yes the new ESPN layout has been rough. Very slow, has lag and layout frustrating. And missing GP as someone pointed out.

After playing both, I prefer Yahoo's same day. I'd rather do ESPN than Yahoo next day.

If we stay with ESPN they better get their act together. Once the season starts, I have no time for slow sites.
