0 Subject: RIBC 2020: getting started

Posted by: Guru

Welcome to the 16 managers in the 2020 RIBC:

Returning from last year's RIBC:
Slizz
mailedfoot
Smith & 9th
Guru
Matt G
Loki
BMD
RJ

Promoted from AAA:
jasonprof
Graydog
maspero
Uptown Bombers
Holt
Mikulka
IAC
Fosten

Promoted from AA:
none

This list includes the top 7 finishers from last year's RIBC (excluding me) and the top 4 from each AAA league, and me. The top four teams in the AA league were all duplicate teams (i.e., the managers also had teams in higher leagues), so no team was promoted from AA.

We had a tie for 7th in the RIBC and a tie for 4th in one AAA league, and only three spots available for those four managers. Twilson was the hard-luck loser of a 4-way coin flip to settle the bubble-team invitations.

My expectation is to continue using ESPN as the hosting site. I know that the recent site redesign had some significant hiccups last year, but improvements were added during the season. However, I do know that there are some managers who would prefer Yahoo. When we have put this to a vote in prior years, ESPN has always been the preferred choice, but I'm willing to hear why others think Yahoo is better.

That's disappointing. I thought this meant we could draft players from the past. I was lining up Barry Bonds, OF, SF (2004) at the top of my cue.

The draft is absolutely slow. I try to stay wake late night, but now in Europe we are at 23.18 and the ultimate pick happened almost six hours ago..
I know, we have enough time until the season beginning, but I spend a lot of time waiting for my turn..

I'm with you Jason. Especially at this point we should be able to queue up and make quick picks just to get it done.

Terribly sorry for the delay... it’s been a day. I had to convert to work from home set up and it totally slipped my mind to check the draft until just now.

Now that it appears there will be a baseball season, I want to remind you all of our status.

We did finish the draft, although the results have not been released, so all players are still locked. That will remain the status until we have more clarity on how the season will be set up.

If the season is set for 60 games, then I would expect to simply reduce all GP and IP maximum limits proportionately. Again, I want to wait until a schedule is released before drawing any final conclusions.

In other words, we are now in "hurry up and wait" mode.

Guru: Any guidance / "playing field" for those leagues that not only finished their draft but successfully input their drafts? Things such as:

- Reversing any waiver pickups that occurred while on coronavirus delay

- When to restart the allowance of FA pickups

- Whether a league puts all players on waivers again

......or just leave it to each league's commissioner to decide?

I guess I would leave it to each league to figure out its own situation based on the resources at hand.

In general, it would be better if my March guidance on not releasing the draft had been followed uniformly, But since you asked, I assume that's not the case.

If a draft has been released, it may be possible to undo the draft, renter it, and then go forward normally - effectively putting all undrafted players on waivers. That requires some extra work by the commish (or perhaps by another manager who could be granted league manager powers.

For the RIBC, I'll probably release the draft about a week in advance of the season (i.e., around July 16).

GP limits should be proportionately reduced from 162 to 60.
IP limits should be proportionately reduced from 1350 to 500.

The trade deadline should be delayed to Sept 11.

Are there other settings that should be considered?

In my home league On the Monday before the season opens we are having a pre waiver supplemental draft where anyone who lost a player to opt out can replace them with someone in the undrafted pool. The selection order will be the order in which the lost players were selected. Injuries and players on Covid IL are not included.

Then waiver order is set based on original draft settings, then we unlock Undrafted players for Waivers

I had been considering adding some IL slots in anticipation of COVID issues, but it looks like the only way to do that would be to erase the draft, reset the IL settings, and then re-enter the draft. I'm not really interested in doing that.

I know that we have a limited bench, but this season is going to be a strange one anyway, and we're all in the same boat, so I think we'll just plow ahead without IL slots.

Other RIBC leagues - feel free to make your own decisions on this issue.

I reactivated the program that checks your roster for today's starting lineup, showing opposing starter info, as well as some other useful info.

Starting lineup data is based on my data supplier feed, which often updates earlier than ESPN does.

Sorry, but it's specifically configured to interface with ESPN. To add a Yahoo interface would require a significant amount of new programming.

Last season (2019), the league average OBP/SLG was .337/.466

So far this year (though games of August 1), the averages are much lower: .321/.405

So the OBP is down about 5%, but the SLG is down 13%

What about the pitching ratios?

the 2019 league average ERA was 4.10, and the WHIP was 1.25

So far, the 2020 league average ERA is 4.05, and the WHIP is 1.19

So the ERA is down only 1.2%, while the WHIP is down about 5%.

I suppose it's logical that the OBP and WHIP are pretty much proportionately down.

But power & ERA are not moving in tandem.

I think part of it is switching back to the non-juiced ball. Another part is the pitchers still being ahead of the hitters at this point, because of the short camps.

My team's pitchers (the few that didn't opt out or get COVID) have not gotten the memo that ERA/WHIP is down...

Is there a set plan for next year's RIBC eligibility if the MLB season gets canceled mid-season? (i.e. is there a cutoff point for how many games would need to be played for the season's results to be treated the way they normally do)

I drafted 11 pitchers this year: after 3 non-COVID injuries, 2 COVID infections, David Price opting out, the generally shorter outings, and a dash of COVID-related rescheduling, those 11 pitchers have thrown a total of 44 IP. Exactly 4 IP per pitcher drafted.

As evidenced by my current 7.01 ERA and 1.56 WHIP, I have resigned myself to adopting a modified Marmol strategy for the rest of this season, so if any of you like any of my SPs at any point in time, offer me a trade.

It's a pity party everywhere this year. The hitters I drafted in the first dozen rounds have been brutal, or hurt:
Round 1: Yelich (finally hitting)
Round 2: Springer hurt
Round 4: Donaldson hurt
Round 6: Moustakas hurt
Round 8: Seager hurt
Round 9: Oscar Mercado dropped b/c he's total garbage
Round 10: Encarnacion hurt
Round 12: Segura should be dropped b/c he's total garbage

Anyone else see wacky things on the ESPN fantasy app for Android? Won't let me edit my lineup even though the players game hasn't started. I have to log into a PC to do make changes. When I click on live results, it shows me stats for players that haven't played yet. Stat totals at bottom of screen don't match the individual player Stat lines for the day's games.

Tell me again why we prefer ESPN to Yahoo?

.866 OPS, 11 SB, 2B/SS/OF, no comments? weird. I would have traded any player on my team for access to SB's like that. it's taken me all season to squeeze 22 out of my whole team. and it doesn't appear that he's hurt or slumping or anything.

Loki, I had noticed that you had (and still have) the top waiver priority. I thought maybe you were just planning to pick him back up via waivers. (I had the #2 priority, second to you.)

Regardless, it's unlikely that he'll make a significant difference with just the final week left.

And today Moore was placed on the injured list with a concussion, so he's out for the season. So not much impact, regardless. So I got six games out of him - which I guess is equivalent to 10% of the season.

no big deal. I was hoping to help get it fixed before waivers ran. he was the 49th overall ranked player in espn at the time (higher than anyone on my squad I assume!).

speaking of which, I've only had 4 of my drafted position players and 4 of my drafted pitchers on my roster all season. anyone else worse than that?

1.16 16 Arenado, Nolan 3B COL terrible.
2.01 17 Scherzer, Max SP WAS 1.39 whip

3.16 48 Snell, Blake SP TAM still hasn't thrown 6 innings in any game this season

4.01 49 Alvarez, Yordan UTL HOU
played like 2 games

5.16 80 Mcneil, Jeff 2B NYM horrible slump the first month or so

6.01 81 Glasnow, Tyler SP TAM Mar 13, 5:40 am
ok, the 4.21 ERA isn't helpful.

7.16 112 Workman, Brandon RP BOS
traded for a dude I got one terrible start from and then lost for year.

8.01 113 Edman, Tommy 2B STL forgot how to steal bases and hit for power

9.16 144 Dahl, David OF COL OF
soooo bad

10.01 145 Sale, Chris SP BOS out all year

11.16 176 Pederson, Joc 1B LAD did he ever get over the mendoza line? doubt it.

12.01 177 Andrus, Elvis SS TEX just awful

13.16 208 Tucker, Kyle OF HOU great year til he forgot how to hit a couple weeks ago.

14.01 209 Puig, Yasiel OF CLE got covid and braves didn't sign him.

15.16 240 Kintzler, Brandon RP MIA
10 saves (11 K's)

16.01 241 Weaver, Luke SP ARI OMG threw the ball like a high schooler, gave up a million runs before I could quarantine him from my team

17.16 272 Lucchesi, Joey SP SDG
got beat up in his first start, in Colorado, and they removed him from the roster

18.01 273 Pollock, A.j. OF LAD good good

19.16 304 Mckay, Brendan SP TAM never played

20.01 305 Rodgers, Brendan 2B COL
good AAA player, bad MLB player

21.16 336 Hill, Rich SP MIN typical rich hill stuff, some good games, some IL

22.01 337 Murphy, Tom C SEA never played

23.16 368 Aguilar, Jesus 1B MIA had to cut him to repair some things in the first week and then he was good for a long time

24.01 369 Kopech, Michael SP CWS
never played

25.16 400 Reyes, Victor
i've had him on my roster most of the season. somewhat useful.

what a disaster. I actually have my roster repaired at this point and I've picked up 28 points in the rankings since Aug. 17 but the season is obviously way too short to come back from such a draft disaster.

That was a horrible draft. You played Houdini last year in AAA by coming back from 16th to winning using trades and astute waiver wire claims, no such luck in a shortened season. Kinda makes me wish I was in The Show this season, it would have been my best chance of beating you for the first time.

Being the owner of Rotten Amoebas, I don't know if I am happy for the second place finish in my first year among the "big boys" or being angry for the 4 points, considering also the Robinson Cano blunder (I dropped him inadvertently and did not bother to tell because of a Rotoworld blurb that gave him out until September, while he came back 10 days later) and the Pablo Lopez blunder no.2 (I dropped him out of frustration because of the 7-10 days the Covid-struck Marlins did not play)....
Anyway, see you next year!!!!
