Hey All. Looking to get things rolling with the 2020 season for the 8 men out league. I sent out a league-wide email about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Unfortunately I've only heard back from about 3 or 4 people. Out of those, 1 person is declining to return.
Do we have the interest to continue this league?

When I drafted Luis Robert, it was with the knowledge he would almost certainly be a keeper going into next season, had this been a normal season.

But it's not.

I don't see why we wouldn't prorate minimums.

I think we need to prorate as well. I drafted Whitley with the hopes of him pitching at the end of the season. This year the is different

I think we all drafted guys with some purpose in mind. We were all taking the same risks when we drafted them. Why is it that suddenly everyone wants some special consideration?

Trey Mancini didnt know he had cancer when i traded a pick for him just before the draft. Should we now reverse the trade? I mean cmon guys this is ridiculous. If we had just finished the draft back in March, we wouldnt even be discussing this shit.

I think the minimums look great.
Drafting prospects is always a bit of crapshoot and we have no idea what will happen with any of them this year. To be keeper eligible the standards are rather low even with 60 games they could be obtained. It will be much more difficult to get reach IP.

I personally wasn’t necessarily asking for special considerations given my own interest. I just thought it was important to raise given we were continuing to draft.

I think comparing Mancini to a prospect is apples and oranges. Injuries happen every season but it will not effect keeper eligibility. If he doesn’t touch the field this year he can still be kept

The point is quite simply, you make your bed you lie in it. Crying over mistakes you made, particularly those surrounding bad speculation on prospects deserves no sympathy nor special treatment.

Explain the bad speculation on prospects? You saw the corona causing baseball to shut down when these picks weee made in March? If so bravo and please let me know who wins the World Series this year so i can bet it.

Also I don’t think anyone is “crying” about it. Just trying to figure it out

Bean, you're being a prick here.

This isn't a normal situation. These weren't normal risks.

Injuries and illness happen to players. They are part of the game.

There is a reasonable expectation that those things may happen and you draft a player with those expectations.

But you don't draft a player - spending an early pick on said player - with the expectation they may not be eligible to be kept because they won't reach an arbitrary number due to a Pandemic.

A pandemic is not part of the game, and in the interest of fairness, you make adjustments, as MLB is doing, and as we should be doing.

Frankly, I have little confidence in a meaningful season.

Right now, nobody knows which players will opt out, or which players will contract Covid and be asked to quarantine. Are we going to also have a special rule for all who might sit out for whatever reason?

The fact is that the whole idea of minimums for prospects is to discourage taking prospects and always playing for the future. If your guy cant meet the minimums as currently stated, then the MLB team wasn't going to use him this year on the MLB roster, and your selection of him was incorrect and you suffer the consequences accordingly.

You roll your dice and hope for a win, just like every other pick from every other fantasy manager. Your picks don't deserve any special consideration.

Tree, I may be a prick, but i have refrained from name calling, so I do have some redeeming qualities. And Wiggs, I am right. And, more importantly, I am not afraid to speak up very loudly, while the incessant whining dominates the airspace.

exactly.

which is why we shouldn't be penalized for the picks we've made.

also, exactly. The prospects that have been picked are players that, in a regular season, would have been reasonably expected to surpass those minimums - so it's not playing for the future, it's actually using a draft pick wisely in a league such as this.

Thusly, those minimums should be adjust in regards to the season we are playing, not the one we would have played in.

I went after Trey Mancini because he would have reasonably been expected to have a great career ahead of him. Since the draft, things changed and he now is being treated for cancer. Sux to be me, sux to be him even more.

Trey doesn't ask for sympathy or special treatment. He picks up the pieces and makes the best of a bad situation.

Meanwhile someone else is going to be taking his spot on the roster and benefiting from his loss. It's brutal, I know, but "there is no crying in baseball."

Tree- i think this is the 1st time you and I have been on the same page in a while :)

Bean- the difference is Mancini with his cancer, Synderguard with injury (who I kept, and am not complaining about, thats baseball) or say Mike Trout just says screw this year I will be back next season. They are are keeper eligible next season.

Prospects who were supposed to play might not make the minimums- still not sure how you can consider them the same thing.

Nobody forced you to take that risk, it was your decision. So far, your player has not failed to meet the requirements. Why are we even discussing this still?

They are are keeper eligible next season.

Right. But keep in mind, this is NOT supposed to be a prospect league. The minimums are there exactly to prevent people from mining the minors for players who aren't ready for a full season and keep those players out of the the draft when they are ready. That was the whole purpose of putting minimums in place and that has not changed.

I did say I think its a good idea to reduce the numbers. But no, I think pro rating them is a horrible idea. We might as well not have any minimums of the mins are 7.2 IP and 18 AB.

Keep in mind the discussion is not necessarily about whether we should reduce or not. Its just how much to reduce by. I'm perfectly willing to discuss all options. But I also want to be clear that the discussion should be not a dualistic discussion of 'pro rata vs no reduction at all.'

And yes, any player who doesn't meet the career minimums is a risk to be a wasted draft pick. No matter the reason for missing those mins.

What if we went with 60 percent?

12 ip and 30 AB.

Amazing, that we set a rule to discourage people from doing a very specific thing. They defy that rule, and then they get sympathy from the commish when they attempt to take advantage of a situation to improve their odds? THIS IS TOTAL BS. There is no need to modify anything, it just encourages the behavior we are trying to stop.

I think the min IP for a keeper should be 60 IP or 250 AB next year. That way nobody is gonna draft a rookie unless they are absolutely sure he is gonna start.

Our time would be better spent if we focus on that instead of wasting our time catering to people who are clearly trying to negotiate a personal advantage.

Bean - I don’t view it as sympathy so as much as reasonableness. As for your suggestion in 140 I’ll ask this: if you don’t think the rule is doing quite enough let’s start this discussion after we get everything else settled. The rule itself was put into place after the league was up and running a few seasons. That reflects the fact that we are still shaking this league into the kind of league we all want. So it’s more than fair to revisit those minimums.

Clearly you plan to cave. Whatever change you capitulate to Khahan, just make sure only guys that are currently drafted get to partake of it. We dont need any further erosion of the rules.

Any newly drafted guys need to meet the rule as written and intended. There is absolutely no argument for anything different.

I sent out an email a few days ago asking everybody to double check their rosters. Was waiting for confirmation that all looks good/no problems. Then life kind of moved on. Thanks everyone. Another fun and challenging year. Really did come down to the wire with VW and Tree right there throughout with strong teams and management. Even yesterday I was checking the standings til lock to see where VW could gain and I could fall. Fortunate I was able to hang on. Thanks again for running things so smoothly, Khahan.

Hey everybody. A big congratulations is well over-due to WG for a great season as well as Vampire Weekend and Nap's taters for awesome podium finishes. Looks like you 3 were head and shoulders above the rest of the league.
I apologize for this being so late, but that's part of the segue into the next part of this message. I will not be returning in 2021.
I'm sure some of you noticed a near complete lack of activity from me this season. I'd love to say it was just being blase about the weird 2020 season and all will be well next year. But the truth is I simply dont have time for fantasy baseball. As some of you know I started back in college last year and am attending nursing school. That shit is BUSY. I'm in class and clinicals about 7-8 hours per day. After that I spend 4-8 more hours studying and doing projects. Since the start of the semester I've had multiple days where I'm up at 5:30, into the hospital, leave at 3:30 come home and do work until 11 and go to bed. There is no way I'll be able to play fantasy baseball next spring with this kind of a schedule, much less commish and run the league and get everything up and running.

So, we need somebody to step up and take the reigns. I also need replaced. I wouldn't recommend contracting my team. We are already down 2 from our starting 14 because we couldn't find managers last year. I still love baseball, still love fantasy baseball and still want to play fantasy baseball. But the reality is I didn't even know the regular season had ended until part way through round 1 of the playoffs. I completely missed any wildcard games and I couldn't even tell you which teams are/were in the playoff this year.

So let me know if you are willing to step up and take over and I'll pass commissioner powers to you. That will settle this league. But you will have to start from scratch at draftime and wont have the option to 'renew league' there.

Congrats WG on the big win!

Khahan, thanks for your years of service running this league. I know it’s a ton of work and we all owe you a big thanks for it.

I am unfortunately also going to be dipping out of the league as I manage too many teams already. I even forgot to start my aces on opening day for crying out loud. It’s been a fun time in this league and I at least got one title out of it. I am leaving some good keepers behind for whomever takes my spot, so I’m glad I’m not hurting anyone there.

Sorry to hear you are leaving taxman.

For everyone, I have spoken with Khahan recently about the future of this league, and have offered to take up the commish mantle for a few years. If we can keep things going, I'd keep the seat warm for his return.

I realize that a number of keeper leagues are already off and running, but I am pretty sure they are just jumping the gun. Following the Superbowl, I was planning to get a new thread started and do a roll call to see if we have enough to continue.
