Biggest pieces to summarize from the preseason threads:
-Ohtani as 1 'draft pick'. Manager that drafts him will forfeit their last round pick and their last bench spot throughout the year in order to retain rights to both.

-Player must have been drafted by us, or been healthy on our roster prior to being eligible to be placed in our IL spot.

-If a player is on IL illegally, upon discovery, the commish simply drops the illegally-IL'd player from the manager's roster and sends the player back to the free agent pool via waivers.

-Rough targets:
Finish pick selection by March 13th.
Finish round 10 by March 20th.
Finish draft by March 27th.

-Drafting 26 rounds.

Started it up with no clock to start.

From the last time Guru ran things RIBC 2021:
"The draft has been activated. Our first round will be untimed, after which we will have a 4 hour clock, starting in round #2. Only one clock applies for those on the turn. Moratorium will be from midnight-8am ET. If a previous pick is still missing, the commish may skip any subsequent picks until the drafter gets current."

Would like to see how this goes to start.
Sometime around 6pm eastern on Monday will decide whether we need to activate a clock prior to round #2.

Will try to input to yahoo as we go, so we don't have to sort through drafted players as we make our decisions.

Into round 2, activated the 4 hr clock with pause from midnight to 8am eastern time.

Will decide on Thursday whether we need clock on weekend. For now it is on for weekends. Rough goal of done round 10 by monday so if we're looking to miss that pace will be the main factor. Options if we fall off pace will be to shorten the clock pause and/or shorten the draft clock.

I've gotten 3 emails today saying it was my turn to pick. I'm happy to oblige and can post my players in this thread if needed. 😃

In past years have noticed some inconsistency in the timing of the notification emails. This year for 2 picks, the notifications seemed to have come through instantly.

Things like that are why 'Never fully trust automation' is one of my main philosophies.

Was your last call to a call center handled by AI? How can you be sure?

I can never be sure. Thankfully Stone Cold taught me to 'Don't Trust Anyone'. That has now spread to 'Don't Trust Anything'.

Avoiding call center contacts is the easy part. Worked in one for a few years and the thought of that environment is very cringe inducing! Avoiding companies in general is the real goal for this guy.

In RIFC there was a provision where if a player got injured mid-draft, we could choose to replace that pick with a yet-to-be-drafted player.

I forget whether or not that provision also exists in RIBC: is that an option, or am I just stuck with a likely-out-for-the-season Edwin Diaz?

that's never been the rule, as far as I'm aware. I know in the past I've been stuck with guys injured hours after I drafted them.

RE 11:

Football I believe we have a predetermined date set (Pre-Season Week 3), and allow a substitution prior to that.

I'm not aware of anything similar in baseball.

I feel like since baseball is played daily in preseason, and not 1 game per week, that there aren't the same "milestone events", and thus it rarely would impact the "flow of the draft" (ie. someone slowing down a draft / effectively waiting for a game to finish before making their pick).

It's unfortunate, but drafting a pitcher seems to always have risks, but that injury was especially weird.

Yeah I was thinking that was a football thing. I've had that happen to me at least twice in ribc, both players who shall remain nameless due to being undrafted, but one of em was my top drafted closer 2 seasons ago. It's still possible Diaz escapes with an injury that isn't season ending. Keep your fingers crossed.

Diaz definitively out for the season. Ruptured patellar tendon.

I can't say I know specifically the history of this policy re:RIFC/RIBC, but I think the rationale for it applies equally to baseball and football. Football has a lot more injuries, sure, but the fantasy impact of losing an early round pick before the draft is even half over is just as significant, if not moreso given RIBC's depth.

I support letting mmikulka make a replacement pick from the remaining player pool, and anyone else who deals with a definitive season-ender moving forward. I'd recommend having this happen at the time of his next pick to make it operationally simple.

that's right - it's not about the risk that someone we draft will get injured before the draft ends. We all carry that risk, in every sport.

It sucks to lose a high draft choice before the draft is finished. I empathize, b/c it's happened to me before multiple times (a round 4 pick one year if I recall correctly, a round 8-10 pick one year was suspended for drug violation 5 hours after I drafted him). Kirby Yates blew out his elbow in spring training in 2021, and he was a 6th round choice (curiously, the team that drafted Yates similarly went all-in on relievers that year, drafting only a single starting pitcher). The list undoubtedly goes on and on.

No one has previously been allowed a replacement pick. And, as rough as it is for someone I wish no ill will towards, I do not support allowing a replacement pick now.

Interesting case that does seem to happen most drafts. One of my keeper leagues even allows for a swap between keeper deadline and draft these days to avoid burying a team before the season even begins.

I can remember a year where holt lost a first round and other high picks before the draft finished and still competed for (probably won) the league title. So nobody is truly buried in a league this deep, just gotta find some late gems for balance.

Confirmed it's never been a thing in RIBC, and that it sucks to hit that landmine but we've all been there and 'empathize'. Some changes can happen with parity in mind though, so I like the spirit of allowing for some type of mulligan in a season ender scenario.

Support for swapping out at the manager's next pick as well as support for no swapping has been posted.

Middle ground proposal to allow a swap out after round 15, for any player drafted in the first 10 rounds that becomes injured for season between being drafted and the end of round 15. Any injury news after round 15 will have to wait until after round 26 for a swap out.

Can process by manually removing the swapped in player from draftime pool and manually changing the pick in yahoo. Fairly simple.

As it stands, would need to see a couple more managers in support of some type of mulligan (plus no further support against), this may just end up being a starting ground on a proposal for what expectations to try to set prior to next year's draft season.

I had remained silent because I didnt think we were seriously considering it, but count me as opposed.

It's terribly unfortunate but is a shared risk for all of us. It has happened to many in past years.

And as for "season ending" being the criteria, what happens if another player gets hurt for an undetermined about of time which ends up being season ending in July? Or expected out 5 months and back in September?

I realize this instance seems black and white but the potential for gray areas is concerning to me, especially as this wasn't discussed prior to the draft starting.

I have Diaz in two other keeper leagues. Yes, it sucks. Nothing against mmikulka, but them's the breaks my friend.

If not for injuries to key players I would have won every league I ever played in. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

Previously posted that I'd decide on Thursday whether we need to keep the clock on for the weekend. With this pace we could afford it, but I see no reason to do a weekend pause. If anyone wants to campaign for a change in the clock for weekend mode, I'm not opposed to considering ideas.

After reading mmikulka's draft rationales, I went back to my email junk folder and, lo and behold, I found that email sent out by Guru. I quote,"It is my dying wish that RIBC switch to a one category league and that category is saves". All of us obviously missed this email except for mmkiulka who even after losing Edwin for the season is the shoe in for the championship. I am also saddened to hear about Guru Hall's health ;)

Imagine drafting closers resulted in saves!

Big props to Bean for drafting at a 0:00 average after 11 picks! Few teams around 3hrs total clock used so far are also really making this enjoyable so far. Only 2 timeouts and not even by much. Nice pace so far everyone.

When the time comes for YWC's final pick of the draft, any player will work as a placeholder pick in draftime. At yahoo- that pick is already reserved for the Ohtani lineup spot.

kdl: "Last year, Foot drafted Cristian Javier in round 25, which has to have been the greatest round 25 draft pick ever"

Went and looked through all my rd 25 picks in Kafenatid (can only see back to 2011). I managed to stumble into Ryan Zimmerman's career year with the very last pick of the 2017 ribc draft. Good times. Seems like there was another lucky pick I had in one of the earlier years but I can't remember who it was now. Usually it's just someone who is waiver fodder of course, but you never know.

ok, that Zimmerman pick has the extra spice of being the very last pick of the draft. Let's make them co-best last rounds picks ever.

Began season!
For anyone that hadn't had a chance to check, players are on waivers until Mar28 so I can still easily make adjustments if anyone catches a late error.

Updated waiver priority to reverse of our draft order selection. Can't think of anything else for now.

Reminder that I will audit lineups from time to time to ensure IL compliance. If anyone posts here to highlight a player added straight to IL, or if I notice any in my audits, the player illegally placed on IL will simply be removed back to FA.
