0 Subject: Preseason Sleepers

Posted by: Jeddi
- [18430316] Thu, Jan 18, 08:06

Thought I would start a thread where we can list players who aren't rookies, that may take a step up for whatever reason and be undervalued in Smallworld.

I'll go first.

Bruce Chen. When I think of more I shall post them!

Dang. I was trying to field a full team of prospects. Will Nick Johnson win a job? Will he be cheap? Surely a 1B guy will emerge . . . And what about SS? Anyone? Anyone??

* indicates pre-season popular pick, and therefore downward price risk.

C -- LaRue* (CIN)
1B --
2B -- Rivas (MIN) or Ortiz* (OAK)
3B -- Placido Polanco (STL) if Pedro Feliz* (SF) doesn't win the job in Spring training.
SS --
OF -- Juan Gonzalez???
OF -- Carlos Beltran???
OF -- Milton Bradley???
OF -- Reggie Sanders???

Pitchers (no real order)
1. Wells or Garland in ChiSox (pay attention to spring training, obviously).
2. Britt Reames (MON)
3. Kinney???
4. ???? At least one BoSox starter will be cheap.
5. ???? Randro with this slot anyway if the rules allow.

Sorry to go off-topic, but since Madman mentioned it, I had to look it up.

Boston opens April 2 at Baltimore, Arizona opens up April 3 at LA, so Randro is in full effect.

However, Boston's 5th game is 4/7, and Arizona's 5th day would be 4/7 also, so they may align early.

Ron Gant at COL. Should he get the starting job, he may turn out to be this years Jeffrey Hammonds.

and Hammonds I think will flop in a big way in Milwaukee - I hear that Miller Park is a "pitchers park".
Seattle pitching should be good again at Safeco.

No I'm not a big Rockies fan, but Todd Walker at 2nd base and Ben Petrick at C have possibilities for big offense at Coors.

Comeback players - Carlos Beltran, Ruben Mateo, Carlos Febles, Matt Morris, Mark McGwire

Players to watch- J.D. Drew - he's got to bust out sometime, whoever hits leadoff in Boston should score a ton of runs, Ichiro Suzuki is interesting, Shannon Stewart is awesome when healthy,Maybe even Kenny Lofton, Look for a ton of offense down in Texas - but I'd probably take a Rockies pitcher at home before I took anyone off the Rangers pitching staff.KEN GRIFFEY will be back

Ben Grieve in TB might be worth a look, depending on pricing. He'll probably be hitting higher in the order (although I'm not sure who will be hitting ahead of him), plus his offense has always been really dampened at the Coliseum. John Sickels ran a little comparison recently showing that Grieve's home OPS over the past three years was .756, while his road OPS was .931. Same column showed that Tropicana helps lefty power hitters. Grieve is still only 25, and has always been tabbed as a "can't-miss" hitter. Maybe a breakout this year?

The Cards sent a good prospect to Balt last year, I think his name was Chris Richard. Plays 1st I think.

Here's a possible undervalued 1B for you, Madman: Sean Casey. At 26, he's just getting into his prime, and after his atrocious first half last year, he had a second-half surge, putting up a .372 BA, .431 OBP and .661 SLG. Might not be priced cheap enough to call a "sleeper," but there's a good chance Casey will be priced lower than he's worth.

Also will be watching how Carl Pavano is throwing. Was having a great season last year (8-4, 3.06) before the surgery.

Another Expo, Michael Barrett, could be an option at C if he can get his confidence back. With Tatis at 3B, I'm hoping they'll be willing to lock in Barrett behind the plate.

Brad Ausmus goes from Comerica to Enron, should be underpriced due to the ballpark factor.

without doing any research i just want to say that ben petrick will be a star, he just needs to mature a little more. when he came up last year i took a chance on him but it didn't exactly pay off. as kevinL mentioned, i believe brad ausmus will have a carrer year in houston. and i expect pat burrel to have a great year also.

ok, people not to pick up. higginson, there's no way he's gonna duplicate last year's numbers. any other tiger or brewer hitter i would say NO to.

i'm wondering though if our pal d'amico is gonna keep up his success. thoguhts?

oh, and does anybody know when Smallworld is gonna start the game?

I would say that D'Amico isn't going to repeat his 2000 season. So he won't be undervalued in SW, even though his IP was lower than it will be this year.

But keep an eye on the rest of the Milwaukee starters. Will Sheets get a job, for example? They've got a number of young arms that will likely be under-priced early.

I wouldn't go for Petrick, unless it's clear that he's got the starting job over Mayne. Platoon guys are trouble in SW.

I read somewhere that Pavano won't be back until May.

Chris Richard may see his PT diminished with the signing of Segui (what ARE the O's doing??). Watch this closely in Spring Training.

I'd be wary of any player that put up numbers that have far exceeded their numbers from any previous year, ex: higgy and d'amico. These guys should both be priced a lot more than their finishing prices last year. However, I do think that higgy and d'amico will continue their success in 2001 barring injury.

Higgy will benefit from a much improved Tiger lineup. Also he will benefit from an increased number of games against the lowly AL central's pitching staffs.

D'amico has great stuff and with the Brewers moving into a new stadium and beefing up their lineup I see him being a solid 15 game winner this year.

I think Hermanson is a pitcher to watch. He could be the next Kile. He should only be around $3-4M based on last year. Pitching in St. Louis will be a real breath of fresh air as far as intensity and fun goes.

Chris Richard may end up being a utility player, but they could move either Richard or Segui into the outfield. If Richard has a good Spring I think he will start somewhere.

from what i've read at rotonews and sportstalk.com, ben sheets will most likely stay in the minors for most of the season. there's a good chance he'll come up in september though.

But, not all sites agree. this is what The Sporting News has to say.

"Not only is Ben Sheets the best pitcher in the farm system, he's the top prospect in the organization. Sheets was the Brewers' No. 1 selection in the 1999 draft, and he has quickly moved up the ladder. Though scouts are impressed with his fastball, Sheets' out pitch has become his sharp overhand curve that breaks from the top of the strike zone to the bottom. Unlike most young hard throwers, Sheets doesn't have control problems.

He went 5-3 with a 1.88 ERA at Class AA Huntsville last season before being promoted to Class AAA Indianapolis where he was 3-5 with a 2.87. His biggest success, however, was a three-hit shutout of Cuba in the gold-medal game of the Olympics. Sheets complements a mid-90s fastball with good off-speed pitches. With a good spring, Sheets will be in Milwaukee's starting rotation to begin the season."

i guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Glendon Rusch, he is the Mets' #3 starter, and he came up big during their playoff run. Look for him to be on A LOT of rosters at the beginning of the season.

Though I think Higgy will have a good year, this is the year that Juan Encarnacion will take over the spotlight as one of the premier all around outfielders in the league. Look for him to explose in 2001!

Anyone know the status of Ryan Anderson in Seattle this year. Is he expected to make the team and get some starts, or does he have some more growing up to do? I thought he was supposed to be the next Randy Johnson, but he never got a call up last year to even show his stuff.

I am here in seattle. He has an up and down year in AAA last year. He was like 13-9 with an ERA over 4 but led the world in Strikeouts with like 191 or something. He has control problems that are supposedly getting better. He has been marked as "Untouchable" by management and is going to spring training as a guy trying to go for 4 or 5th starter. He has "stuff" all over the place and has matured a lot from his immature antics. I would look to see him start off in AAA but he should be pulled up this year. The thing is that the M's have TONS of good young pitching, and they want him to be TOTALLY ready. We'll just have to see. Keep you eyes open.

CP - I will believe in Encarnacion when he develops some plate discipline. Ballpark doesn't help either.

Maybe it's just to sell tickets in the new park, but the Brewers' winter PR campaign has Sheets out front and center as an expected part of the rotation. I doubt they'd go ahead if he can't get anyone out in Arizona, but as of now you can assume he'll be one of the top four.

I'm adding to my list as ESPN comes out with each Hot Stove Heater. I now have a potential SS -- I can't believe I forgot about him --

SS- Jimmy Rollins, assuming he can hit my weight in April, of course.

I think the big 3 behind him in Philly are going to have much improved years (Rolen, Burrell, OK, Abreu will just be his usual awesome self). So if he can get on base (his OBP will likely be around Johnny Damon's IMO -- 1 walk every 10 AB's, hopefully a 300 average), he'll get some SW points. Given the OAK SB strategy, he may even get as many steals as Johnny, although that remains to be seen. As you can tell, I'm a bitter KC fan ;-)

i've put together a list of some possible sleepers for 2001. some had good years last, and some 2 years ago, but they still have the potential have a breakout year.

Pitchers
Cliff Polite (phi)
Bruce Chen (phi)
Matt Clement (sd)
Tomokazu Ohka (bos)
Geraldo Guzman (ari)- he was on everyone's roster last year for about a week, i think he'll recover and have a stellar year.
Ryan Anderson (sea)
Jamey Wright (mil)

Outfielders
Pat Burrel (phi)- i really like this guy, and i excpet a bug year out of him.
Peter Burgeron (mon)
juan encarnacion (det)- if he can somehow get some discipline at the plate, he's wroth looking at.
Lance Berkman (hou)- nuff said :)

Infield/Catcher
Jeremy Giambi (oak)
Adam Piatt (oak)- can't remember exactly but picking him up the day before his 8 rbi performance was a great move.
Todd Walker (col)- he just recently signed a 3 year contract and depending on his preseason performance he may win the second basemen job outright
Carlos Febles (kc)
Ramon Castro (fla)
Aramis Ramirez (pit)

minor leaguers to watch
Ben Sheets (mil)- duh
Vernon Wells (tor)- he was drafted in 1998 and was with the bluejays in 99. from what i've read he's got patience at the plate and is fast.
Eric Munson (det)- although he's not likely too put up numbers this year, he may platoon with billy mcmillon at DH this year.
Dernell Stenson (bos)- he's played two full years of AAA ball and is offensively ready for the majors. the only problem is, his defense is very shaky.
Aubrey Huff (tb)- i really like this guy, even though he does play for the rays. he had great AA numbers last year, hitting over .300. he came up later in the season for tampa and posted some solid numbers for a first time big leaguer. 122 AB, .287 BA, 4 HR, 12 R, 14 RBI

Strike One:

I'm assuming that you are talking about these guys in the context of SW Baseball. I like some of the names there...but a few stand out as not being good bets for next season.

1)Ryan Anderson is probably going to be in AAA for at least the first half of the season, barring a stellar ST and some injuries to the incumbent players. The M's have about 6 SP candidates at the ML level right now. I wish they would trade Tomko or Moyer to make room for Anderson, but I just don't see Sweet Lou giving him a shot this soon. But, I've been wrong before.

2)Guzman looked good last year, both at AAA and at the ML level. However, the same caveat applies to him that applied to Anderson. He has 5 guys in front of him. Rototimes is projecting him as a spot-starter/long-reliever. I'm not sure he will be that valuable unless someone's arm falls off this season (hmm...RJ, Schilling, Stottlemyre...well, maybe he WILL have value.).

3)Giambi/Piatt- This could be a problem. If one of them (Piatt) really makes a lot of noise in ST, he could be worth a pickup. Otherwise, you are looking at two platoon players.

4)Ramon Castro- Forget about it. He's good, but he has Charles Johnson blocking his way to the ML level now. He will not likely contribute much this season.

5)Vernon Wells- He's a damn good player, and will likely be an All-Star in the future. But, I doubt he will be worth picking up next season. He did a passable job in AAA this season as a 22 yr old. He was rushed to the bigs by the Jays, in a monumentally stupid move two seasons ago. He will have to put up a BIG spring to crack the starting line-up at the ML level. This is not impossible, but I would not pick him as a must have for next year. Now, for 2002 or 2003, maybe. Just not next season. If you are referring to a traditional Roto keeper league, well, duh. Grab him. :)

6)Eric Munson- Munson is not ready. Plus, he got injured late last season. They say that he will be ready for ST, but the injury was a stress fracture to the lower back. As someone who has injured his back before, I only have two words for anyone who wants to pick this guy up: Caveat Emptor.

7)Aubrey Huff- He plays for the Devil Rays. Nuff said. They have shown the incredible capacity to ignore cheap players in their own system, and have instead signed aging vets to staff their team. As they got rid of Canseco and Hernandez, it may be that they are changing this philosphy. I'm not convinced yet, though. If he gets a chance to start, he might not be too bad of a pick.

Just my thoughts.

Other than some of the names mentioned above

-Chris Holt will break out of his losing ways. The guy is way due to win some...
-CC.Sabathia=Stud
-Hollandsworth to get the AB's and be fantasy worthy with Coors backdrop.
-Jacque Jones breaks out this year.
-Jose Mercedes...great 2nd half last year out of nowhere. Could Surprise and make it a normal thing
-Esteban Yan...Favorite at this time to close in Tampa with Hernandez gone
-Ramon Hernandez breakout year in 2001
-Cliff Floyd...No injuries and he is a fantasy superstar.
-Richie Sexson..Just 40HR-130RBI NO big deal...

I definatley like the Jacque Jones call. The guy is due for a big year and also another Twin that could make some noise is Chad Allen. He is projected to play in AAA but I think he has the ability to win the 3rd OF spot.

As for pitchers:

Keep an eye on Scott Elarton. Eventhough he is playing at Enron his numbers were great near the end of last season and is the projected Opening Day starter with Reynolds out for awhile.

Elarton won't come cheap though. He is far from a sleeper, as he won 15+ games last year. I do agree that he will have a great season, and for roto games, could be a mid round steal. But for SW, I don't know if his price warrants a draft buy.

Always helps to look at first/second half splits. The two names that jump out the most for me are Sean Casey and Reggie Sanders.

Also, look out for Alex Ochoa. If he plays every day he could be a major sleeper.

2B seems to be the position with the most options with the possibility of Rivas(Min), Ortiz(Oak) and Hairston(Bal) all having starting jobs.

Chris Richard hs major questions regarding his playing time. Hairston might start at 2B, moving Deshields to the OF. His situation will have to be monitored. If he doesn't get the nod, it may require playing a little more for better known players Burrell and Casey.

At Catcher, Petrick is a great buy if he plays enough. As of now, it looks like a strict platoon with Mayne. Lopez at 3.33 looks like a deal.

As for pitchers, many cheapies will be in the rotation for their teams, but I think with studs being at midrange prices, that I will forget about them all together(unless one a la Kile emerges that is really good) and take midrange bargains. I mean, isn't El Duque at 4.35 a little nuts?

You guys have some pretty good names covered in here but i'd like to throw out some new ones (a few may be repeated i just quickly sacned the board)

- OF Ichiro Suzuki, This guy was unbelievable in the japanese i believe he won 8 striaght batting titles. And for only 3.0 million smallworld dollars he is a steal. 3 is kinda expensive but he is somewhat proven and has potential to grow in value while prducing great numbers.
- OF Lance berkman 21 homers and and OPS (on base and slugging percentage combined) higher than griffey for 4 mil less than griffey? gotta look at him.

-3B Eric Chavez This is my nuberone pick for player who will explode this season. I predict 38 homers and a .311 batting avrage. 3.83 mil a little expensive but he is a steal at that price if he produces as capeable.

- Pat "the bat" Last year when he IPO'd at around 4.5 mil if i remember correctally smallworld players were outraged and his price didn't tke the expected skyrocket. However if would have ipo'd at this years price of under 3 mil he would have shot up. Look for price gains and production from this man.

- Tomo Ohka He will win 10 games this year and who know how many more if he is top shape if he pitches well early expect huge gains from this 1.26 mil rising star.

- another cheapie to watch if he starts is ben petrick he's playing in colorado and has hitting potential at 1.29 mil he shoul make you money.

- Alfonso Soriano, Yankee infielder who's offensive talent is being compared to vlad guerrero if any yanks get hurt and he finds the line up he's on my roster, 1.25 mil

- Jason bere He's a solid pitcher but with the cubs? I am still considering this but I live in chicago and if the wind is blowing in early season this 2.5 mil starter is on my staff.

- Finally i'd just like to say Corey patterson he's not gonna be a superstar right away but i'll watch him if he plays at his minimum salery i'm willing to give him a chance.

Well thats how i fell sorry if i rerpaeted too many tried to post some new names but probally didn't :-) good luk fantasy players!!!

"The Year of the Todd?"

Todd Hollandsworth and Todd Walker put up big numbers in CO. Todd Hundley moves to the Friendly Confines. Look for the Hammonds effect to exert itself on the Todds.

Bounce-backs from:
Tatis
Beltran
Greer
Castilla
Michael Barrett
Doc Halladay
Juan Guzman
Alex Fernandez
David Cone
Kevin Millwood
Larry Walker
Ismael Valdes

The "last year's prospect" effect from:

Look for "statistical corrections" (i.e. moderate regression) from:
Richard Hidalgo

Here are a few of sleeper picks. Some may not be CHEAP but they will still far outperform their Smallworld $ value.

SP:Adam Eaton: 2.42$ Future star. Could be this year.

SP: B.Chen 3.32$: Duh

SP: E.Milton 3.87$ Improving command, Leftie, and his K/BB ratio is nuts. The next Mussina. Superstar on a weak team.

RP : J.Mecir 2.56$ 2001's , 1999 Jeff Zimmerman.

1B : Couldn't find a "solid" sleeper, Konerko? Tony Clark? D.Ortiz? All too tough to call.

2B : T.Walker : 1.93M$ : (Even if he platoons to start, (which I doubt highly) he will still rack up better numbers then most 2nd baseman at his price)

2B : C.Biggio : 4.28 : 2 million $'s cheaper then Alomar and playing in Enron. 1 Bad season out of what the last 7 years? I think last year was just an ajustment period for Biggo and I'm thinking he will produce Alomar type numbers if he is as healthy as they say he is. Watch how he does in spring training.

2B : J.Ortiz could be a let down though. Widely held and a early slump could cost you a trade + $ early on. I say stick with someone more reliable until a few weeks into the season, then jump on the train if it's there.

C : Meluskey : 2.57 , J.LaRue .54 $ : Meluskey will hit over .300 with 20+ homers, Larue...who cares what he hits, he's starting and he's DIRT CHEAP. His $ value has almost no loss potential and he has star written all over him.

OF: R.Greer, J.Gonzalez, L.Walker 3 Comeback of the year nominees.

Anyways I gotta get back to work hope this helps some of you...

I have been working on my team for almost a month now and ive come up with plenty of cheap players. Especially at OF. But all around you can put a nice hitting staff for around 20 mil if that.

Ben Petrick - Catcher - 1.29 mil
Pat Burrel - 1B - 2.81 mil
Jose Ortiz - 2B - .750 mil
or
Todd Walker at 1.93 mil
Aramis Ramirez - 3B - 1.25 mil
Jimmy Rollins - SS - .500 mil
OF
Juan Gonzalez 4.51
Lance Berkman 3.25
Ichiro Suzuki 3.00
Carlos Beltran 1.98

This roster = 19.34 mil and its not bad in my eyes. I can still fit an amazing pitching staff and do the randro theory.
Would like to hear some opinions on my idea.

hey ive been doin the "randro" thing ever since i started smallworld baseball. its worked almost all the time but this year i think Randy's gonna choke and not do that good. In spring training hes been horrible and hasnt even lived up to his name, "the big unit". on the other hand pedro is doing unbelieveable and i would start a new thing using Pedro and Kevin Brown once Brown is back and healthy. I have a feeling Brown is much more consistent than Randy and will have a good year.

Brown may not even make his first start.

Pudge i have the same feeling as you about RJ. He is due for a big letdown, but for atleast the first month randro should work alright, because of his history.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this; has anyone noticed Barry Zito has been getting hammered in ST? I have him on my roster right now, but I am going to start looking for a replacement because he does not seem to have his stuff. Just a heads up if anyone is thinking about drafting this Oakland P. Of course, I may be putting too much stock in TRAINING games. I think this is a good observation to have out there, though.

I like Chris Holt as well. He eats up innings, moved to a pitcher-freindly ball park, and has good stuff. I can see him winning 15 games and surprise most of us.

one of my "sleeper hopes" is Russ Ortiz of Giants. His high-walk ratio has been major shortcoming in otherwise solid career...this ST he has just 3 walks (and 20Ks)in 22 innings...maybe he has learned something. and at just over $3mil...worth a try say I.

Pete Harnisch, in a contract year, has been dominating in ST. If he stays healthy (BIG IF) and if Cynergy doesn't play to much of a hitters' park in it new configuration, I look for big things from Petey at $4.00 mil.

A couple of guys worth keeping an eye on that cracked the Opening Day starting line-up:

Dee Brown - KC
Albert Pujols - StL

Somebody in today's action thread wanted the early
season predictions brought back to the top, so
here it is. It's always interesting to see how
people's sleeper picks worked out

Ichiro wasn't exactly a surprise. The guy was dominant in Japan. If you can hit the likes of Nomo, Shig, et al., you can probably hit some of the children that are pitching in America. A whole lot of us had him on our many of our different rosters.

Other than the expected rebounds from Walker and Juan Gone, the mentions of obvious guys like Berkman and Ichiro, the only one to get a great sleeper off the bat was MyBoyJack with Pujols.

(Maybe Madman too with Rollins, although he was pretty widely known too.)

Congrats MBJ :)

BUTT --
I thought it was fun to look over this one. Not to single anyone oot, but there were a couple of calls that RJ would choke . . . MBJ gets major bragging rights for naming Pujols . . . sledge is the only one I noticed who mentioned Morris or Drew . . . in general, our pitcher sleeper precitions were garbage . . . someone should self-edit one of their posts to include a prediction that Boone will be be an MVP candidate . . .
