Has anyone caught a view of that extraordinary pitch when Johnson nailed a dove flying by? If you havent, i suggest you catch spotscenter tonight because i have never seen a bird explode before today. Oh if you have a weak stomach i suggest you dont watch, or if you're an animal rights activist. |

Reminiscent of Dave Winfield drilling a seagull on a throw from the outfield.
I feel bad for the bird, bad enough to get hit by any pitcher, but RJ?!?! Can you imagine being the hitter at the plate and seeing that happen? Maybe Jon Kruk knew more than we gave him credit for.

The important question is, was it a ball, or a strike?

Since I didn't hear anybody talking about how the exploded bird grossed out the catcher when the baseball carried the bloody corpse into his glove, I suppose it fell onto the ground and was called a ball.

This just goes to show what an evil animal hater RJ really is. This sort of activity has no place in Major League Baseball.
Animal rights tried to sue the pants off Dave Winfield back in 1983 for animal cruelty. This case is much worse, IMO. If I were RJ, I'd watch my wallet. And jail time could really hurt his fantasy value.
Seagulls yesterday, doves today, endangered species tomorrow. What has society come to?
(sarcasm) ---------------- Actually, what IS the proper umpire call in this case? Ball? Do-over?

I think it would have to be a ball. It apparently stayed in play so you couldn't call dead ball. The ball left his hand so it wouldn't be a balk (if there was even anyone on base). Certainly couldn't be a strike (I'll spare you the fowl ball pun).

Wow, I just saw it on ESPN. Any word on the dove, I'm guessing he's out for the season?

I just saw it on TSN too. It's like playing video games when you kill a bird, it turns into a bunch of feathers. I think the bird is "out infinitely".

Winfield ended up getting a personal visit from the Mayor of Toronto to apologize after all the animal rights charges were dropped.
Any word from the Mayor of Tucson?
By the way, did Randy get to keep the dove?

My girlfriend said that when she saw it on TV (she didn't remember what channel) they were playing the Prince song "When Doves Cry".
That's funny stuff.

Awww. If it's a heater, guess what's gonna be their dinner? A roast dove!
Jedi, so that's why the dove came... It heard its song playing. =)

Left Wings, my girlfriend meant that they were playing the song on TV while showing the clip, they weren't playing it in the stadium when it happened. Looking back at my post I can see how you would get confused. Let's just pretend that they were playing it in the stadium...that's much funnier.
