This was sort of a sporadic tradition last year, but people seemed to have quite a bit of fun with it. So in honor of Opening Day being just around the corner, I'll throw out this first pitch:
Who was the last Braves starter other than Maddux, Glavine or Smoltz to get the Opening Day start for Atlanta? |

I suspect that there were no uniform numbers in 1927.

Mark L - You suspect correctly. The Yankees were the first team with numbers (1929) and the numbers were issued according to the batting order.

Here is a question for which I do NOT know the answer:
in 1984, Kirby Puckett had 557 at-bats without hitting a home run. Two years later, he hit 31 HR. Is there any other player who has had a season of 500 or more ABs (hell, 400 or more ABs) without homering who later went on to hit 30 or more in a single season?

The Yanks also played at Shea in the 70's during the renovation of Yankee Stadium. Does anybody (oldtimers, lol) know the other players who have worn a Met and Yankee uniform in their careers and hit a homerun at Shea wearing a Yankee uniform?

a couple more facts about puckett's '84 season
165 hits-12 doubles, 5 triples, and 148 singles. he wasn't even coming close to homering.
he also had just 31 rbi in those 557 ab's.
still trying to think of anyone else with a similar power turnaround.

Power shortage (Other direction), though not as dramatic:
David Bell going into Safeco: 1999 pre allstar - 15 dingers 1999 post allstar - 6 dingers 2000 total - 11 dingers
Shawn Green coming into LA: 1999 42 dingers 2000 24 dingers

Strange but true.
When Hack Wilson set the major league record with 191 RBI in 1930, he did it despite leading the National League in walks.

Who holds the major league record with most home runs in a home run durby.

Sorry about the Ordonez comment. Being a NJ resident, I have seen his lack of power for way too long. I think the record recently in the All Star Derby was McGwire at Fenway, but in the old Big League Challenge Games, I think I recall Yaz hitting something like 16 in their format....

Im not sure when but I remember watching him go on a tear one year. I thought it was circa the all star game in Pittsburgh whenever that was, but Thomas might have won that. Who the hell knows, they all run together.

Well I'll keep it going, albeit its not a humdinger of a question. Barry Larkin used to be the active player with the most at bats career wise without a grand slam, until he hit one this year. Now the top two are teammates. Who are they?

The beauty of run support.
I believe Jon Miller said that he has gotten 6.3(seems a little high, maybe 5.3) RPG of support, by far the most in the majors during that span.

New trivia question (might be an easy one): who are the only 2 players who are Hall-of-Fame eligible (that is, retired at least 5 years) who have 2 or more MVP Awards but are NOT in the Hall of Fame?

KB8ers is correct. However, Molitor is incorrect in that he did not win 2 MVPs, besides the fact he is not eligible.
Which players that are not yet eligible for the HOF have won at least 2 MVP awards? There are 4, so make a guess that includes 4 names - see if you can get it without looking it up. (There was one name that I was surprised to see when I was looking for this.)

I was surprised about Thomas, remembered he was good at one time, but not to THAT extent (back-to-back MVPs).

2001 Run Support - #3. Sele 4.85
2000 Run Support - #4. Sele 4.59
1999 Run Support - #2. Sele 5.15
1998 Run Support - #5 Sele 4.79
Chris (post #98) - I heard Jon Miller say 6.3 also. I believe he said for this year. Not being an official stat, there are different ways to figure 'Run Support'. These are from CNN/SI. I checked once and they calculated it based on number of runs your team had when you left game (or score of record - my term). You leave after 6 innings leading 1-0, team score 5 in 9th and wins 6-0, you could say you got '1' run of support. Or you could say '6'.
So, for 2001 Sele is 4.85 at CNN/SI
ESPN on TV says 6.3
Before Sunday night game, Seattle had scored a total of 114 runs in the 18 games Sele started (6.33).
Another thing they said about Sele Sunday night, "not since [????-????] when [?? who ??] has a pitcher won 17 or more games three years in a row with an ERA over 4.00." (Sele 1998-2000)
Or did they say NEVER. I can't remember.

Sele is a winner, and vastly underrated.
His ERA stats for 98 and 99 were a bit inflated by playing for Texas, with that hitters park as a home park. If the man wins 18-19 games a year, year in and year out, after a while it can't be considered a fluke or the product of fortunate hitting behind him.
As a Rangers fan, I thought it was a stupid mistake when they let him get away. Still do.

Who am I?
I had a slugging "rival" that I was compared with statistically for years, but after outhitting him (in HRs) in our rookie years, I trailed him for most of my career in lifetime HRs. Finally I had a monster HR season (my best ever) and passed him that year in lifetime HR totals, and the following year moved into 2nd place on the all-time HR list. Yet before I retired, I had lost my position as 2nd all-time in HRs. Who am I?

'I' am Willie Mays. My 'hitting rival' was Mickey Mantle.
Mays hit 20 HR's in 1951, Mantle 13. Mantle passed Mays in 1952 and through 1964 (454-453) had more HR's than Mays at the end of each year.
Mays hit 52 (his best) in 1965 to move ahead, Mantle had 19.
In 1966 Mays passed Jimmy Foxx (534 HR's) and moved in #2 spot on all time list.
End of 1966. Ruth 714 Mays 542 Foxx 534 T Williams 521 Ott 511 Mantle 496 E. Matthews 493 . . . . . . . >>>> Aaron 442
Mantle passed Foxx in 1968 to move into #3
End of 1968 Ruth 714 Mays 587 Mantle 536 Foxx 534
Aaron (34) passed Mays in 1972 (8) to move into #2 spot.
End of 1972 Ruth 714 Aaron 673 Mays 654 Killebrew 541 Mantle 536 Foxx 534 F Robinson 522 T Williams 521 E Banks 512 Matthews 512 Ott 511
Answer was easy (I hope). Exact numbers took a little work (if they are right - hope I didn't miss someone). Born in 1950. Have a fantasy baseball team '1964 Phillies'. My 'era'. Have no idea how many times I saw Mays play at Connie Mack Stadium (and once in LA) or Mantle at Yankee Stadium and Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Baseball nut as a kid. Lucky my dad and god-father were too. Still a baseball nut sometimes.

steve, great answer ...I grew up in that same era. I hope you too collected baseball cards from then and have some still. I kept some over the years of my favorite players, and now they are actually worth a few bucks (though I'd likely never sell.)
Here's a trivia question for you (or anyone) from before "our" time: when Babe Ruth retired, he was #1 all-time in career HRs, of course. Who was 2nd at that time? (and, if you like, who were the rest of the top 5?)

steve, re your post on the methods used to figure "run support", it seems that the only relevant way to figure it is to use numbers his team scored WHEN HE WAS IN THE GAME. The runs that are scored after he leaves a game do NOT help him get a win (with a few exceptions) -since, if he is not ahead when he leaves, he can't get the victory. And it seems that "run support" is a stat that is cited in terms of wins-losses and little else.

Pretty sure when Ruth retired in 1935. 2. Gehrig 378 3. Foxx 302 4. Hornsby 300
Not so sure. ?? Al Simmons 256 ?? H Wilson 244

Steve, here are two that I have always wondered, but have never known where to find: maybe you know.
1. Prior to Babe Ruth, who was the single season HR record holder? And how many? 2. Prior to Babe Ruth, who was the career HR record holder ? And how many?
If you DON'T know (or can't find rapidly), say so and maybe we can see who in Gurupie-land can find the answer, and how long it takes.

Using a 1992 MacMillan Encyclopedia ????
I find Gavvy Cravath of the Phillies with 24 in 1915. He led NL in HR's 6 times between 1913 and 1919. Retired with 119.
In 1884 Ned Williamson hit 27 for CHI, NL.
Sam Thompson had 128 HR's 1885-1898.
Ruth had 162 at the end of 1921 (after hitting 59).
Sure there might be others over 100.
