http://www.baseball-reference.com is a great site. But it's temporarily down.

I ran into this message when trying to lookup the all-time K leader (batter) in response to Natedog's question

Dear Baseball-Reference.com user,

We apologize for the inconvenience, but due to a large amount traffic, Baseball-Reference.com has been disabled by our hosting provider. After several phone calls we were finally able to convince them to allow us to post this note and also access my e-mail.

While lots of traffic is generally not thought of as a bad thing, "unlimited bandwidth" does not always mean unlimited bandwidth. In the first week of April, Baseball-Reference served 1.07 million files (134k per day) and a total of 650k in individual pages (85k of these are scripts that require a trip to the database), while servicing 42,000 distinct hosts. The 11.3 GB of data transferred is also a very high total. We hope to have the site up and running very soon, but these issues are unlikely to go away and may only become more acute as the site continues to gain in popularity. As a benchmark, our traffic in April was about 1/100th to 1/200th of the traffic of "big sites" like CBSsportsline, ESPN.com, etc.

Because of this we are being forced to consider a number of options we thought we could put off for a year or more. We are looking at a dedicated server, or perhaps buying our own server and having it co-located. Both require a lot of time and effort and somewhere between $200-$400/month, but it is becoming apparent that we need to do something given the overwhelming popularity of both the Baseball-Reference.com site and our other sites.

You can support this venture with your patience, your comments, or perhaps some financial support. If you have previously supported the site, thank you and those dollars will help move us over to this new, more expensive operation. If you would like to make a payment for either past or future efforts by this site, please visit this page for details.

Any comments or suggestions would be very welcome. And if you join our e-mail list, you will be notified the second the site has relaunched and then in the future when any new features are added to the site.

Thank you for your patience, and in the interim I would encourage you to visit some of our other sites. We hope to have this site back up by April 22 at the latest.

If you love Gleem.com, then you'll adore Gleemhost.com ;)

It's not quite 11.3 GB, but the biggest current listing is 9 GB at $16.95/month. Gleemhost is run by my friend who also runs Gleem.com with me. I'm sure if they talked to him, they might be able to work something out.

I was doing some old thread cleanup, and stumbled across this one, which I had missed when it forst appeared.

I just checked, and it looks like the Baseball-reference.com site is still down. In fact, the message quoted by Madman is no longer visible.

KKB - they mentioned 11Gb of data transfer in one week, so I don't think that's even remotely in the ballpark of 9Gb per month.

By comparison, this forum currently generates about 1Gb of data transfer per day. Given the resource usage described above, I don't think there's any question that they'll need a dedicated server.

Guru, it's not still down. It's back down. It was up for about a week but they had a message up all week that it might be going down again for a short period of time while they try to get everything fixed.

KKB, baseball-reference is only going to grow so I highly doubt that Gleem will be able to handle it. For those of you who have never been there, you really should go there. It is unbelievable. I've been using it since the end of last season and I am constantly at that site. It is great!

Below is more information from Forman that he posted on his primer site. Here's some information for those of you looking for good baseball sites. These sites won't necessarily help you much with Smallworld but they're great sites if you're a baseball fan. My favorite is BaseballProspectus. They have great articles. They're a more analytical than Rob Neyer and a lot more sarcastic. BaseballPrimer is a new site that Forman (the owner of baseball-reference) started and it's meant to be mostly a primer. They have some good writers there but IMHO it doesn't come close to matching what Prospectus has. There is a lot of bad blood between the sites but they're both worth it if you enjoy reading baseball analysis. Baseball-reference is irreplaceable as a reference. You can look up any player who ever played to get their stats and a lot of other interesting information about them (like black ink, HOF monitor, similar players). You can also get team and league stats. It is just an unbelievable site. Unfortunately it's down right now but this is what Forman had to say about it.

First off, thanks for all the great support! I really appreciate it.

As for the server, I just faxed the contract, signed, sealed and delivered. The donations are covering
pretty much the first six months and maybe more. We will have to develop some other revenue
streams in that time, but all our sites together are getting pretty good sized, so that should be doable.
If the new revenue streams do work out, I'll be able to put a little money into things like uniform
numbers, game logs, etc. and we might see a few more items up on the site over this summer. That's
not guaranteed, but I think it might happen.

The site is down again now, but I'm hoping that it will be back up by Monday. It will likely just be a
matter of getting networksolutions to repoint the domain name and uploading the needed files.

I'm looking forward to it as I think the site will be better in the long run for the move.
