More and more states allow you to search their unclaimed property lists online (closed bank accounts, old paychecks not picked up, etc.). I just found a little bit of property for my wife's grandfather's estate here in Jersey.

Anyway, it's a fun way to kill an hour, looking yourself up along with friends & family:

Unclaimed Property Links by State

Happy hunting!

Thanks, PD. I just found something under my late dad's name -- maybe it'll amount to something for my mom (!).

Taking next steps.

Depends on your laws, I would guess. Check your province's department of taxation or revenue (that's where most of these state unclaimed property departments are in).

LOL, Species! You mean you don't remember that time you did?

Great news, J and walk. I found $15.00 for my aunt in Ohio this morning, too, from an old (20 year) bank account.

There are companies that just go through these databases, trying to locate those people who have large amounts of cash, and then collect "finder's fees" of up to 50%.

Here's the link for the Bank Of Canada site, for us Canucks. Haven't looked at it yet as I have to go to a hockey game, but here's hoping I come back and find out I'm a millionare! ;)

Woo hoo! I found $0! Then again, I suppose it would help if Louisiana had a way you could search their database. Typical... so very typical.

I didn't find any for any of my family, but I must have found a pretty good chunk for a friend of mine a while back, they bought us a real nice kitchen suite.... He said it was the least he could do...

Sludge, try this link for LA:

Lousiana Department of Treasury

The left column has "unclaimed propery" at the top, which will bring you to a search form.

Old thread, but worth a butt. Ran into a guy at a local fair this weekend from the PA Department of Treasury, who was doing free searches right there of their unclaimed funds site. Didn't see anyone find any money, but going through the various sites is an easy half-hour of fun.

If you owe any back taxes I wouldn't try to claim any money. I hear through the grapevine (a former IRS collection agent) that this is a very effective way for the IRS to find people.

Normally, these are tax refunds, old paychecks, banks accounts, and that kind of stuff. In other words, stuff for which income taxes have already been paid.

Any slimeballs who are avoiding the IRS because of back taxes don't deserve to have the money back anyway.

I did find some $ for a couple of celebrities around Chicago...found some for the mayor of Chicago Richard Daley, a couple of sports radio personalities, etc...

The scary thing about it is if they have a unique name or you otherwise are sure it is the correct person you now have their home address (or at least an address they once lived at). Probably can find some sports stars if you look...lets look...lol...here are a couple...

Example:
SOSA SAMMY 405 N WABASH APT 3510 CHICAGO, IL
SOSA SONIA 322 LAKE AVE WOODSTOCK, IL
PIPPEN SCOTT 980 NORTH MICHIGAN AVENUE 1600 CHICAGO, IL

Found some money at ASCAP or BMI for a number of big recording stars. Diana Ross, etc. Sent them notes about it, but probably won't get a commission.
