Subject: Voting for the Next Guru, Jr.
Posted by: Madman, Guru Jr.
- [29246911] Tue, May 08, 19:23
I apologize for any delay. We have so many worthy candidates left to honor, as well. So let's let the voting begin!
Polls will close at noon CST on Thursday, May 10
Hopefully that will be enough time to get all your votes in. Further, message board traffic seems to dip a bit starting Friday afternoon, so bumping up the day from Friday to Thursday might make some sense, I think.
If not, well, then the next Guru Jr. can change it. :p. _____________________________________________ To recap the criteria, the next Guru Jr. must:
Show signs of Guru-like tendencies, which include, but aren't limited to: statistical support, answering questions, and just being all-around good for the prosperity of this forum. The nominee can also show a sense of humor that makes this forum more enjoyable during hard times.
The winner gets the nametag for the week and the honor of choosing the Guru Jr. the following week based on nominations.
The previous Guru Jr. winners for this year have been:
philliephan and myself.
So, let the voting begin! _____________________________________________
P.S. I never got to thank everyone for voting for me previously. I really do appreciate it. I somehow missed the thread, I guess. That's the result of a combination of an increasingly active message board (a good thing) and a bit busier schedule for myself lately. |

This is an important post. Read it thoroughly and completely before casting your vote.
For the 36th consecutive week, I cast my vote in favor of Chris for his work with GSB attribute data. Honestly, I am sick of this. Richard has already won many Guru Jrs, Pulitzers, and other awards for his roster sampling and spreadsheets. He's done great work, but there are many deserving people out there who don't even get a thank you for their work.
The attribute work was Chris's first great moment; he treated the game the way Guru would have, if he were to play GSB. I have voted for Chris every week since, and he has rarely received more than two or three votes.
Little did we know, but that would be just the start. A little later, Chris uncovered the GRT theory in GSB, a process which allowed many Gurupies to develop unstoppable teams, most of which are still unstoppable today. Like the Guru's work, Chris's analysis of the GRT gave Gurupies an edge in a fantasy sports game.
Then, there was SSB. Chris took this game and made it his passion. He analyzed every facet of the game, from recruiting to in-game play. Blessed with a good team from the start, he made it even better by playing to its strengths and by recruiting well. He's more than halfway to a perfect season at 13-0 this season, and he's done it all himself.
Without even mentioning his high finishes in Smallworld and other games, I've said enough. But I will say some more. Some people vote for Guru Jr. based on intangibles. Let me tell you, Chris has those two. He's a leader in the Gurupie chatroom and always offers his opinion on any matter, no matter how small it might be. He's got a great sense of humor - he just might be the 2nd funniest Gurupie of all.
It's an injustice that Chris hasn't even received a hint of support for Guru Jr. Even Ira has more votes than Chris. I don't ask much, but I demand that voting be cleared and restarted. For the sake of the sanctity of the award.
Sincerely, Blue Hen

Emory blows. They let any number of idiots into that school. I've heard of people who get turned down from state schools that go to Emory.

Did you get turned down from a state school, Ghettofied? I sure didn't. Besides, I hear ESPN recruits from Emory. Why don't you tell us what sorry-ass college you're going to apply to in three years so we can make fun of it...

Ok, so maybe my school blows. What does that say about me? Nothing.
P.S. You defy all logic by calling a school ranked 9th when I entered it "full of idiots."

Guys, this is what you get for having a political gurupie count the ballots. . .
I'm not sure I'm into that half and half thing. I probably shouldn't have said that I was going to count Ira's half and half . . .
So, here's the scoop. If I let Strike One determine Ira's vote split, and if I let Ref split his vote, I have KKB 19.5 over RSF. If I disallow all vote splits, then I have RSF over KKB 19-18. If I don't allow Strike One to change Ira's vote, then I have a dead heat tie at 19-19.
AAAARRGHHH.
Any Advice? Please tell me I miscounted.

Allow the split votes and give it to KrazyKoalaBears. Definitely deserving with all the work (setup, design, implementation, support, administration) into Madball and Pick 'ems as well as hosting those games for us (very reliably I must add).

This is getting hilarious. I've gone back and "verified" some of the vote totals. Unfortunately, I think I counted them correctly . . . With the exception that I counted KKB's joke vote from his mother (I presume). So this would put it at 19-18.5 ish . . . Any other comments before I make my ruling?

My vote would be to name both KKB and RSF as co-guru jr's and let them serve out the rest of the year. That way we can honor two of our more beloved and respected contributors and we can forget this roto guru jr silliness for the rest of the year.
I never been entirely comfortable with the idea of picking a weekly guru jr, but then again, I never been comfortable with the employee-of-the-month, student-of-the-week type of honors that are so pervasive in our lives. It just grates me the wrong way when we single people out or put them in competition with each other for these honors. I'm not sure of a better way to honor those outstanding contributors but this way bothers me a bit.
Sorry for the rant, I guess it's been building-up inside of me for a while. Maybe it's the phase of the moon or something in the water;-)
Richard
ps - Please don't mis-construe this as an attack against either KKB or RSF. I have nothing but admiration and respect for the skill and dedication that both of these two bring to this message board. They are both on my short hero list. Thanks, both KKB abd RSF, you make this a better place for all of us.

Why not just say NO split votes...and allow the splitters a few hours to come make their final choice or their votes are not counted.
It is ridiculous to split a vote anyway...isn't that what they tried to do in florida? Throw out the votes...=) or check for hanging chad.

You had better just have a complete world wide revote. Selectively counting split votes. And do I see some vote tampering going on here? votes being changed by third parties? And non-registered voting? hmmmm. I think to keep this fair walk will insist on a worldwide revote ;-)
Maybe we need to move this to the politics forum :)

Richard -- yeah, I know. Feel the same way. . . But I'm not sure right now is the best time to mess with things.
I thought about your solution and variations on it . . .
Oh well. Anyone can feel free to start a "Problems with Madman's solution" thread if you desire.
One other idea would be to make all past recipients ineligible. . . and then not make it a weekly sort of thing. . .
