0 Subject: OT: Most Entertaining Moment in Sports: 1980-NOW

I posted my top ten list last night on the Greatest Sports Accomplishment thread, and when I woke up this morning, found that someone had issue with my #8 - Hulk slams Andre at Wrestlemania 3. Crispin correctly pointed out that Hulk's slam really couldn't fit under the rubric of "greatest sports accomplishment" since it was practiced over and over before it actually occurred.

What I decided, after reading that post, was that what happened that night might not have been a great accomplishment, but it was certainly entertaining. SO, I decided to start this post - What is the most entertaining moment in sports/sports entertainment over the last 21 years?

18-05-2000: italian championship: juventus 2 points ahead us (lazio), last match of the season (3 point for a win, 1 for a tie match, 0 for the loss): lazio beats reggina 3-0 at home while juventus was playing vs perugia: Anever seen rain falled on perugia city, delaying the match by 2 ours and half, while in rome all fans were entered into the field since the match was ended. We were all listening to small radios, waiting for juventus's match to restart. Juventus's players didn't want to restart playng (they needed to win and hoped to replay the all match because the score was 0-0 at the end of the first half) but the refree decided to restart playing even if the field was completely full of water. Well, at the middle of the 2nd half Calori, a defender of Perugia scored an incredible goal with the ball that runned slowly in the net because of the water on the field.....in Rome all the fans on the field exploded in a huge rumble jumping and running everywhere, but it wasn't ended. Juventus attached Perugia's defense as Fort Apache and everytime the speaker on the radio made his voice concitated in rome fans falled in an icy silence....but at 18:04, after the last occasion failed by juventus, the refree made the final whistle.....and believe me, that was the most incredible season ending a championship should have had.....and obviously the happiest day in my life.

As a UConn fan/alum I'd have to say Tate George hitting "The Shot" to beat Clemson with :01 seconds left in the game. It also gave UConn their first Sweet 16 appearance. I still get chills watching those highlights!

Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. (Not simply the ending, but all events that led up to the time when Gibson hits the homer to win it. In fact the entire season where the A's were predicted to run away with it and the overachieving Dodgers.)

My personal favorite sports highlights from 80 to present:

#1 Watching MJ perform for 13 years...too many great moments to list just one. I watched probably 95% of his games from when he was a rookie until he retired. Hitting "the shot" against Cleveland. Playing when he was deadly sick against Utah and carrying the team to the win in Utah. The final shot against Utah. The slam dunk contests vs Nique. Scoring 55 in NY after his return. Scoring 69 on Cleveland. The first half against Portland when he scored like 39, in the finals. His younger years when he just flat out beat people off the dribble and slammed on everyone in the league. Overcoming the Pistons and sweeping them out of the playoffs. Scoring 63 on the Celtics in the 86 playoffs. Intimadating the opposition so you could literally see fear in their faces. Just dominating the league. So many many great moments. Nearly every game he played he did something that I was just amazed at. That is the thing that the younger generation that didn't watch MJ game after game will never appreciate. You see a highlight reel of MJ and think yeah that is great but other guys can do some of that stuff but what people do not realize is that MJ did that stuff every game and you could probably make a highlight reel that is days long and not run out of great shots or great plays or great highlights.

#2 The 85 Chicago Bears. Probably the most magical season in Chicago sports history. So many personalities. Such defensive dominance. Payton. The Super Bowl shuffle. Destroyed opposition like no team ever or since.

#3 Walter Payton. Just watching this little guy run and destroy tacklers. He never gave up and literally would wear down entire defenses. The perfect football player. My hero growing up.

#4 Sosa vs McGuire homerun race. Just pure excitement and really renewed my interest in baseball.

#5 Kerry Wood strikes out 20 (first place)Astros. An unbelievable game for a rookie against a pretty good lineup. His curve and fast ball were so dominant he made the Astros hitters look like little leaguers.

#6 1980 Miracle on Ice. Best olympic moment by far.

#7 1984 Chicago Cubs...so close yet so far. Another magical season that simply ran out of magic against the Padres. (probably one of the biggest disappointments too)

#8 1998 wild card Cubs. Just very exciting plus had a rookie Kerry Wood and a 66 homerun Sosa. City was alive.

#9 Andre Dawson and Ryne Sandberg...two class acts who played the game hard.

#10...well hoping the Cubs win the World Series sometime in my lifetime thus taking over the number one spot on this list and moving everyone else down a notch. People have been waiting so long..I can't even begin to imagine what Chicago would do if the Cubs won it all.

For me it was watching Kirk Gibson hit his famous pinch-hit home run against Oakland's Dennis Eckersley in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series to vault the Dodgers to the title.

I'm still awed by the scene of seeing Kirk limp up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth and hitting the ball out and seeing him hobble around the bases on legs so sore he could hardly stand up.

A great great Dodger memory.

A few of my most entertaining all relate to Auburn University sports. In no particular order:

1997. Auburn Baseball. Watching Tim Hudson win 15 games and strike out 165 as a pitcher and break the Auburn single-season record for RBIs (95) while also playing OF (non-pitching days) and DH (pitching days). Keep in mind that this is the same school that produced Frank Thomas.

1993. Auburn Football. Being able to watch the team go undefeated for the season.

1993. Auburn Football. While beating UF in the rain, the entire stadium crowd was stomping their feet. I remember stopping for a second and realizing that the entire stadium was literally shaking. Fear and excitement can coexist. ;)

1996. Auburn Football. No season tickets that year, but I got a ticket to the Auburn/LSU game. About midway through the 2nd quarter, the old gym (which is literally right across a 2 lane street from the stadium) went up in flames. You could see the flames over the top of the stadium. Want to know how crazy they are about football in the South? They kept playing!!! And I kept watching the game!!! ;)

yes, Gibby's homer off the Ick is my all-timer too. I still remember the moment like it was yesterday. I have the video of that series and still pop it in from time to to relive the moment.

A close 2nd is watching Mike Jones stop Kevin Dyson to secure the Rams' first Super Bowl win. I still shake my head in amazement today over that one.

1) First Cubs night game (the one that got rained out). Morganna the Kissing Bandit runs out when Sandberg is batting. A close race ensues between her and a hefty security guard who finally catches up to her and escorts her from the field. A pitch or two later, Sandberg hits a homer, and it looks like he was laughing around the bases.

2( The Blue Angels flying over the Wrigley outfield while Sosa hits a homer during the summer of '98. Talk about goosebumps.

2) Joe Carter's WS winning HR

3) 1990? Canada Cup victory for Canada.

4) BC Lions '94 Grey Cup win

For me it was the Laettner shot to beat Kentucky in the Elite 8. I was in my living room, in junior high, screaming my lungs out when Grant Hill got him the ball. An unbelievable game, with my favorite player of all time (Bobby Hurley), and my favorite squad on the way to a title.

Close second: The Tribe's series run in 95. If only.....

#1 entertaining event - George Blanda's swan song game when he came out and threw a TD pass on his first play from scrimmage and then kicking the convert! (Kirk Gibson's HR would be a close second - I'll never forget him limping out and belting that homer).
#1 entertaining series of events - Paul Henderson's goals in '72 versus the Russkis (along with Phil Espisito's supporting heroics).
#1 entertaining career of events - Wayne Gretzky passing, shooting, scoring and just being one of the best ambassadors of any sport, anytime and anywhere!

Ok, after KKB gave me about a million goose bumps talking about the Auburn Tigers I'm going to have to chime in. By the way KKB, I was at all of those games you mentioned...see if you remember these.

2001 Basketball. Jay Heard hitting the shot from half court to beat Alabama in overtime. The Legend of Jay Heard will never die.

The rest are football...

1993 Florida. We were undefeated going into the Florida game and the experts said that this was the end. Florida was ranked 4th and heavly favored. Calvin Jackson intercepted a pass and ran it back 96 yards for the touchdown in the first quarter. It was all over from then on. We won 38-35.

1993 Alabama. Auburn was undefeated and needed only to beat Alabama. Early on we were losing 14-5 and things turned from bad to worse when our quarterback, Stan White, got hurt. We put in Patrick Nix who didn't even have time to warm up. First play in Nix threw a floater in the endzone and Frank Sanders made an amazing catch for the touchdown. It's still the greatest play I have ever seen. Auburn won 22-14.

1994 LSU. We had the longest winning streak in the nation and it looked like we were about to lose it to LSU (the same exact thing happened to Alabama the year before). We were down by about 3 touchdowns starting the fourth quarter. We intercepted the ball 4 times in that quarter (3 of them we ran back for touchdowns) and won 30-26. The whole stadium was at the brink of insanity. I still haven't recovered.

1997 Alabama. We were losing 17-15 and all Alabama had to do was get a first down and it was over. They fumbled the ball with about a minute to go and we recovered. We went on to kick a field goal to win 18-17. It clinched the West for us.

Of course there are many more games that get me all choked up. '89 Alabama (Pat Dye was later quoted as saying, "The crowd wouldn't let us lose."), '89 Florida, '90 Florida State, '94 Florida, '95 Alabama, '00 Alabama...pretty much any year we beat Alabama.

War Eagle!

KKB and Jeff. You guys made my day. I'm the biggest AU fan in North America. I grew up in Jourdan Hare. (please no jokes about me being conceived there). Ive had season tickets as long as I can remember.

Greatest Comeback: Had to be 94 LSU. Thank God for Curly Hallman. Worst coaching mistake I've ever seen.

Greatest Individual Performance: A. Bruce 1987. Look it up. He was a one man gang.

Worst Ever Draft Pick from Auburn: A. Bruce. 1988. Look it up.

My childhood baby sitter: Stan White. Berry High School

Best Bowl Game: 1986 Citrus. Auburn was trailing in the second quarter until USC knocked Joseph out cold and then hit after the play was dead. Dye and the players went wild. Auburn dominated the rest of the game.

Worst bowl game:95 Outback. Unfortunately I traveled a long way to see Davis rush for 100 yds in a qurter; get hurt; and then get embarrassed.

You guys try to stump me in 83-01 AU football. I dare ya

jedi, yep I remember those too. Unfortunately I didn't make it to the comback against LSU, but it was awesome to hear on the radio. "TOUCHDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN AUBURN!" Those words will never leave my ears. I'll never understand why they were passing so much in the 4th quarter. 1 interception? Ok, stop passing. 2 interceptions? Ok, Stop Passing! 3 interceptions?!?! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!?!?

I remember being in the stands for the '93 Bama game and Nix came in. We were all like, "Who the hell is this guy?" We got all down and figured we were going to lose at that point, then next thing you know, corner of the endzone "TOUCHDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN AUBURN!" Anyone remember who caught the pass? He's made many an acrobatic catch since that one. Frank Sanders, now playing for ARI.

And how can you forget 1 year later? '94 in the Swamp. The Gators had never lost to an SEC team at the Swamp. The Gators were ranked #1. 0:30 to go in the 4th. What's that I see? Nix to Sanders! "TOUCHDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN AUBURN!". That one was great because Florida thought the year before was a fluke. They even spread out the "visitors" seats around the stadium so us Tigers wouldn't make too much noise as one pack of fans.

So many great games, but I still miss sitting in Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park on a warm spring afternoon and watching Hudson, Etheridge, Faulkner, Gross, and Bean. Those were the days... ;)

Hummm....

- Big Mac / Sosa run to 61
Not sure how many of us would be really posting on the boards today if it wasn't for these two... The homerun derby so to speak, revitilized baseball after the nasty strike... Watching 62 and 70 go over the fence was incredible.

- I see a lot of SEC fans here, and I can't believe none of you said Georgia's 2000 Win over Tennessee (21-10) or Tennessee's 1998 Win over Florida (20-17)

- Florida States "Wide Right" Game

- 1980 USA Hockey games are etched into my mine forever

- All the years Wayne Gretzky was in Edmonton (total dominance)

- Tiger Woods at the British Open Last Year

- Biggest Blunder - St. Louis Cardinals / Kansas City Royals World Series "Called Safe Play"

KKB, I'm a student at Auburn right now so I remember Bama week all too well. I would drive by the motor homes every night and scream out War Eagle. When we play Alabama at home some fans will drive from the Georgia game straight to Auburn to wait a week for the Bama game...I love it.

Hawerchuk flips the puck up the left wing boards to Gretzky. Gretzky... to Lemieux... SCORES!!!

Paul Henderson's goal is the one that gets the most talk, but like the 1980 Olympics, it's the off-ice stuff that really makes that moment. Heck, if Canada had sent the best team they could have in '72 (Bobby Hull, anyone???) and not taken the Soviets so lightly, it wouldn't have gotten to that point.

The 1987 Canada Cup was probably the best hockey any of us will ever see. Gretzky and Lemieux at (or near) the top of their game, an awesome Soviet team (still mainly unknown to North American audiences), and most importantly, two teams that really cared who won, with no ties to their opponents (will Scott Stevens really give Patrick Elias his best shots in Salt Lake City?) and most importantly, many weeks of practicing together before the tourney, not the 12 days the NHL is shutting down next year.

Yup, we'll never see hockey like that again.

Most exciting baseball moment? Down 1-0 in the series, trailing in the 9th inning (or was it the 8th?), Ed Sprague, of all people, takes Jeff Reardon downtown...

Most exciting NFL moment? Tony Banks gets called for delay of game because he suddenly can't hear anything after the TWA Dome explodes in spontaneous cheering while Banks tries to call the play. The many walkmans in the crowd had alerted the so-called Rams fans to Big Mac hitting #69 a few blocks down the street...

P.S. Trivia about the Lemieux goal? It was actually a 3-on-1, not a 2-on-1 as commonly perceived. When Lemieux shot the puck, Larry Murphy was at the edge of the Soviet crease, presumably waiting for a rebound because he must've known there was no way he was going to get a pass. The unfortunate Soviet defenceman who *falls down* trying to stop the play? None other than a very young Igor Kravchuk...

My dad is a preacher and Ive never seen him raise his voice except at the 93 vandy game when some drunk vandy fan flipped us off when they got down to the 5. My dad went crazy and when Auburn stopped them he wouldnt stop yelling. I laughed the whole way back to Chattanooga.

I owe my baseball and Yankee fandom to Bob Welch, Bert Hooten and (I think) Charlie Hough....why them? They served up Reggie's 3 consecutive HR's in the World Series....

But since that isn't from 1980-on, I would have to say Jim Leyritz' 3-run shot in the 8th inning off of Mark Wohlers in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series. Not only did that shot change the entire complexion of that series, it may have swung the momentum of the 2nd half of the decade towards the Yanks.

Wrestlemania 3 was great, and one of the last times I watched wrestling. Andre losing to the Hulkster was great entertainment.

Jaret Wright v Yankees, 1997.

Cleveland scoring 3 runs in the World Series against Florida with the ball never travelling more than 10 feet away from home plate. They just kept coming!

I can't believe no one's mentioned Vince Carter's 2000 Dunk Contest. That's the most entertaining thing I've ever seen.

For me personally, being at Game 6 in 93 for Carter's homerun (Gate 11, Aisle 124, Row 38, Seat 10).

And for a pretty obscure reference that only Canadians and Indians fans would have a chance to remember: Mark Whiten knocking out Jack McDowell in 90 or 91 (I don't remember). He was charging the mound, Jack put his fists up, Whiten brushed them out of the way like twigs sticking out from some little bush with his left hand and threw the fiercest right hand to the face you'll ever see in a baseball brawl.

pd - you mean you wouldn't include Craig Counsell's sacrifice fly (wasn't it?) amongst your most cherished moments? I know I do! ;-)

Oh, no, that was a hit (if you are speaking of the game 7 winning hit).

I was disappointed almost as much by NBC not replaying the game winning hit (it went just over the glove of Nagy, as I recall, but by not playing the reply you couldn't see how close the final hit came to being an out).

That was a dull series, but that final game 7 was truly a classic for anyone who saw it. Great stuff.

My top 10 in no particular order:

1982 Milwaukee Brewers. I was 8 and I saw or listened to about 150 games that season. Yount MVP. Cooper finished 3rd or 4th. Paul Molitor. Vuckovich Cy Young. Rollie Fingers... awesome season.

Michael Jordan. Tough to pick one, but for me it was probably when he single-handedly beat Cleveland to advance to the Eastern Finals. I will never forget that shot. Was that '87 or '89?

1989 Milwaukee Brewers. 13-0 to start the season and Paul Molitor's 39 game hitting streak.

1993 University of Wisconsin appears in their first Rose Bowl since 1968 and beats heavy favorite UCLA. (The first of 3 Rose Bowl victories in the 90's for Wisconsin, that's a record.)

Nolan Ryan's 300th win in Milwaukee - I was there. My dad made me leave in the 8th inning. Thanks Dad!! (Note the heavy sarcasm)

Ron Dayne's freshman season at the UW. Never saw anything like it and probably never will again. A stretch of 4 games out of 5 where he ran for over 250 yards.

Chicago Bulls 70 win season.

Randy Johnson's 20 K game. This DBack's season actually looks like it will be in the top 10 when all is said and done.

University of Wisconsin's magical run to the Final Four two years ago. I had a buddy in town from Wisconsin, and all of Phoenix knew who we were rooting for over that 2 week stretch.

Attending the first playoff game in Diamondback's history, even though they lost. The one time that BOB was a raucous arena.

adz, I think that Jordan game was '89. Amazing shot, with Ehlo right in his face. He said he couldn't even see the basket the D was so tight.

I watched the game on TV with some buddies in Cincinnati, and you just had to tip your hat to the guy. When you put up a game like that against the Bulls, do your best, and he still beats you, you just clap your hands, pick up your stuff and leave.

Thanks for the info, PD. I agree with your sentiments. Actually though, you could talk about just about any Jordan vs Cleveland game. They were all amazing. ;)

Since 1980 seems to have been chosen arbitrarily I'm going with my favorite moment of all time and it only happend 2 years earlier.

October 2, 1978, New York (99-63) at Boston (99-63) in a one game playoff to see who goes to the playoffs and eventually the World Championship. Top of the seventh, Yankees trail. Up steps Bucky Dent, 2 on, 2 out. He launches a titanic shot off Mike Torrez into the net behind the green monster and the Yanks take the lead and go on to win 5-4. Stayed home from college that day just so I could watch the game. The way Boston kept mounting counter-attacks, the last 3 innings were the best I have ever seen, IMHO.

Think Buckner's name bothers Sox fans. Mention Bucky's name and watch their eyes spin. ;)

Bulls' 70-win season?

That reminds me -- one of those 12 losses came in *Toronto*, of all places. Doug Christie shuts down MJ, and the expansion Raptors pull off the upset of the year, in front of 35,000 fans (some of which were actually there to see the Raps). That was a really "fun" game to be at, even if it really meant nothing in the "big picture"...
